Why I Chose The Word Childhood
When I looked over the words for the Personal Definitions Essay, I was at a stand still. All of the
words that were presented seemed great, but still a cliche. For instance, the easiest word on there
has to be Love. How many people on the street right now could answer What does love mean to
you? and it is a universal definition of one loving another in a caring and loving way. How many
people would give examples of their significant others or their families to show assurance of this
definition? But those people would never talk about the heartbreak they have gone through
loving another. They would never speak of the dark corners of their souls exposed to someone
who didn t care or worse scared and stopped. Love changes every day. That s why I chose a
different route a more challenging route. I chose the word Childhood. The definition of
childhood is a period of life from birth to puberty with the etymology being old English.
Everybody has experienced childhood, and everybody has a different experience on it but not
everybody has come out the same way. The first person I asked was my friend Brian. We had
decided to hang out on a whim, and I decided this would be the perfect opportunity of getting some
of my research done for this essay. What does Childhood mean to you? I had joked, and his eyes
grew serious at the question. It was in and out of the hospital, he admitted, gaze long and drawn out.
It was never knowing what to expect the next day. (B. Leathern,

Brine Shrimp Case Study
3.Brine shrimp have survived successfully since the Triassic period, around 200 million years this
has been possible through their unique adaptations which have enabled them to avoid predators
and suit their environment. They are pretty good at surviving except in space (who knew
radiation isn t good for shrimp). One of the best adaptations the brine shrimp have is their ability
to survive in waters of very high salinity (up to 25%). There optimal levels of salinity are 3 3.5%
but they are rarely found in waters below 6 8% salinity for the same reason this adaptation is so
good, no predators occupy waters with this level of salinity. With this adaptation they are protected
from much predation and have very few predators except for birds. Another reason there
environment is good for their survival is that it is so widespread. Salt water lakes are found all over
the world. They also use autotomy in defence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firstly adult female brine shrimp ovulate approximately every 140 hours and in optimal
conditions the fertilised eggs can almost immediately hatch, even over a relatively short lifetime
of a year this is a lot of young. They have another brilliant reproductive adaption; while in extreme
conditions, such as low oxygen level or salinity above 15‰, female brine shrimp produce eggs
with a chorion coating which has a brown colour. These eggs, also known as cysts, are
metabolically inactive and can remain in total stasis for two years while in dry oxygen free
conditions, even at temperatures below freezing. The shrimp have also been able to survive
dangerous salinity levels as the eggs wait to hatch if the salinity levels are too high. Once placed
back in briny water the eggs hatch within a few hours. This ability also has enabled them to spread
the population by the eggs travelling on the feet of birds. They have also been known to reproduce
asexually by parthenogenesis in the absence of
Analysis Of Steve Smulka Paints Glass
Steve Smulka paints glass but it might be more accurate to say that Smulka paints light. Smulka uses
mason jars, vintage seltzer bottles, wine decanters, vases and water pitchers to capture the way light
bends, refracts, illuminates, and distorts its surroundings. In some of the paintings, backgrounds of
looming clouds and ridged tree bark are as in focus as the glass containers in the foreground,
merging the two in a poetic, scrupulously accurate, yet slightly unreal manner. In other paintings,
bottles in columns two, three, or four deep create multiple layers of transparency that make for
almost abstract studies of light and color. In Steve Smulka s closely observed, meditative paintings,
these densely luminous layers give weight to the

Socrates And Achilles
Socrates and Achilles: the Martyr Heroes
Madelyn Vogel
ILS 205

By comparing himself to the Greek hero Achilles before the jury in Plato s Apology, Socrates
attempts to portray himself as a hero of equal merit to Achilles and others of similar standing. By
selecting the greatest of the Classical Greeks to compare and contrast himself to in his argument,
Socrates surreptitiously urges his audience to view him as being of the same caliber as Achilles. This
not only authenticates Socrates claims, but also exhibits his disconnect from earlier forms of
thought. Essentially, Socrates attempts to display himself in the same light as his predecessor
Achilles through their shared aspiration to do what they deem to be right in addition to their ... Show

At the battle of Troy, Achilles chooses almost certain death in exchange for the honor of avenging
Patroclus. As Socrates paraphrases, when his mother said to him, as he was eager to slay Hector,
My son, if you avenge the death of your friend Patroclus and kill Hector, you yourself shall die;
for straightway, after Hector, is death appointed unto you, (The Apology, 28c). However, Socrates
is relatively loose in his representation of Achilles. Homer s Achilles is focused primarily on
private affairs as seen when he only agrees to return to battle to avenge personal loss in the form of
his beloved Patroclus (The Iliad, book 18, 120). Contrastingly, Socrates represents the Greek hero as
being much more absorbed by the necessity of attaining honor and justice for both himself and his
peers. Through this specific example, Socrates makes it apparent that, he, like Achilles before him,
is both willing and able to die if that is what it takes to find truth. He will under no circumstances
condemn any of his actions just to save his life. Socrates primary motivation for comparing himself
to Achilles, the best of all the classic heroes, is to convince the jury of his Achillean heroism. One
attribute of a hero according to the events of the Iliad is that one must either kill or be killed in the
pursuit of honor. Correspondingly, the Iliad chronicles Achilles life and death on the natural path to
heroism. Despite the
Asynchronous Transfer Mode for Transmitting Information Essay
ATM is called Asynchronous Transfer Mode. ATM is a networking technology which transmits
information in the form fixed cells. The main vision behind designing ATM was integration of
services and performance requirements of both telephony and data networking which was
shortly called Broadband Integrated Service Vision (B ISDN). This cell relay protocol was designed
by ATM forum and was universally adopted by ITU T. Usually the size of the fixed cells is about 53
bytes with 5 bytes for header and 48 bytes payload. When compared to the cell sizes used in the
previous technologies, the size of an ATM is small. The smaller size of the ATM cells gives us a
major advantage. ATM enables us to transmit video, audio and data over the same network... Show

This should be done without any degradation in the performance or without requiring any
replacement. 3.The design must be implemented in a less expensive method. In case the ATM
becomes the backbone of the international communications the cost of implementing it should not
be a major barrier. 4.The proposed system must ensure accurate and predictable delivery. This is
possible only if ATM is a Connection Oriented system. 5.The major objective of ATM was to
move most of the functionalities to the hardware side and have comparatively less functionalities
in the software. This will ensure higher speed in the delivery of packets. It is clear from the
above points that the major goal of ATM was to ensure guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). To
ensure this various service classes were defined by the ATM forum like Constant Bit Rate, Real
time Variable Bit Rate, Non Real time Variable Bit Rate, Unspecified Bit Rate, Available Bit Rate.
ARCHITECTURE OF ATM NETWORKS The ATM is a cell switched network as discussed
previously. There are two important interfaces which acts as a backbone to the whole architecture
of ATM. The first is Network to Network interface (NNI) and the other is the User to Network
interface (UNI). The User to Network interface is used to connect the User access devices or the end
points to the switches, while the Network to Network interface is used to connect various switches.
The connection between two end

From multiple points of view, the history of spices industry is in the history of humans and global
commerce. The use of spices in food, cosmetics, and embalming can be traced back to ancient

Man and Nature in The Blue Hotel and The Open Boat

Stephen Crane uses a massive, ominous stove, sprawled out in a tiny room and burning with god
like violence, as a principal metaphor to communicate his interpretation of the world. Full of nearly
restrained energy, the torrid stove is a symbol of the burning, potentially eruptive earth to which
humans cling and of which they are a part. As a literary naturalist, Crane interpreted reality from a
Darwinian perspective, and saw the earth driven by adamant natural laws, violent and powerful laws
which are often hostile to humans and their societies, and he conceived of humans as accidents,
inhabiting a harsh, irrational, dangerous world. Crane s famous depiction of the ... Show more

In The Open Boat, Crane writes of the EXPERIENCE OF FOUR MEN FROM THE SUNK
STEAMER COMMODORE (743). Having escaped the sunken ship, the four men the cook, the
correspondent, the oiler, and the captain are now in a dinghy sailing obstinately in the midst of a
seething ocean for the coast of Florida. From the beginning of the story till the end, one can admire
these honest men, who confront such a dangerous environment.

One passage that comes early in the story shows their honest acceptance of reality: A singular
disadvantage of the sea lies in the fact that after successfully surmounting one wave you discover
that there is another behind it just as important and just as nervously anxious to do something
effective in the way of swamping boats (744). Passages like this one in which the characters
personify nature in a negative way abound in this story. Of course, no wave is nervously anxious, but
this interpretation of reality as opposed to the interpretation that the characters of The Blue Hotel
give is one that actually attempts to point out some truth about dangerous nature; the men, in their
human way, are accepting nature as it is. The joyless
