An Economic Boom:
Why it Matters:
• After WWII………Americans had wealth……..large savings accounts
• The economic growth was the longest in history
• Americans will be able to live better than ever before
• Optimistic period…………..Happy Time!
• Key: Economic prosperity will be critical to the US in the 1950s

The Nation Recovers from War:

• Truman worked hard to change the economy back to peacetime production

• Demobilization- Removing soldiers from combat….bringing them home to civilian life

• Jobs for the returning veterans

GI Bill and Returning Veterans:

• GI Bill of Rights- benefit for veterans

• Provided low cost mortgages

• Provided financial assistance for education

• GI Bill helped to spark the demand for new homes which started a housing boom and
more people seeking higher education
Baby Boom:

• Baby Boom- over 25 milion babies born

• Biggest population growth seen outside of immigration

• Created a cultural shift toward kids and family life

• Advertising, products and entertainment would support this shift

US Economy Overall:

• Demand for consumer goods soared


• Economic prosperity that lasted about 20 years
• US became richest country in the world
• US produced 50% of the world’s products……….new technology would be a driving force

• Impressive military career…..a real household name in the era

Eisenhower's approach to politics to appeal to all Americans and focus on the needs of
everyone not just siding with his party
