The Major Battles of the Civil War Essay
The Major Battles of the Civil War

No other war seems to hold our focus like the Civil War. Scholars have chosen to make it their life
s work, authors have written reams about it, and we all feel some kind of connection to the Civil
War. This paper was created to highlight some of the major battles that took place during that
conflict. Major battles usually marked a drastic change in the momentum from one side to the other
or led to massive losses of troops. These battles and their results all played a huge part in the
outcome of the war.
One of the war s first battles was the Battle of First Bull Run. Today s site of the Battle of First

General Pierre Beauregard, commander of Confederate troops at the Battle of First Bull Run and
second in command during the Battle of Shiloh, commented that the enemy was given ...the most
surprising surprise but the delays allowed Union reinforcements to take their place on the
battlefield beside their comrades and drive the rebels back after two days of fighting. No ground
was gained, no strategic town was taken, no supply depot was sacked, but the Union victory did
force the evacuation of Confederate troops from much of Tennessee and split the rebel forces along
the lines formed by the Mississippi River.

Albert Sidney Johnson was a Troop Commander in this battle. Johnston was born in Kentucky and
obtained his education at West Point. He graduated in 1826. Johnston s first taste of active service
came in 1832 during the Black Hawk Indian War. He resigned his commission afterwards only to
return to active duty in 1836. He fought against the United States Indians on the River Neches and
served in the Mexican War with Major General Zachary Taylor. Taylor made Johnston a paymaster
during Taylor s presidency. He continued his rise in the ranks by becoming a colonel in the 2nd
Calvary, a brevet brigadier general commanding the Utah military district and in 1861 the
commander of the Pacific Coast.
Johnston was the highest ranking individual on either side to die in battle. While directing
operations during the battle, Johnston was
The Black Death
THE BLACK DEATH! What Is The Black Death?

The Black Death is a disease that went on for over 5 years. It also spread around a wide range of
places! It killled and harmed thousands upon thousands of people and had no mercy. If you were
to sadly catch the Black Death, you would DEFINITELY die and there was many cures and causes
however none of the causes actually worked also all of causes were thought to be a punishment
from God. Once you knew you had the Black Death, you were abliged to hang a red cross on the
front of your door. This was to warn un infected peasants to stay away unless they wanted to catch it.

So far I think that the Black Death was a disaster. This is because there was no proven working ...

This meant the plauge could not spread. The only time a human being was to go to Scotland
would be to deliver food or essential items. I still think that the Black Death was a disaster as no
boby new how the desiease was spreading and what would be the lucky place to either not have it at
all or to not be re visited by it!

Causes.... Bad air. Some people believed that the Black Death was spread by in hailing bad
fumes. Intimacy. A lot of peasants had big families, they all hugged and kissed one another not
knowing if they or the other person had the desiease. Wickedness, people believed that god was
punishing them so to stop the irony, they whipped themselves. This way the died painfully yet
quickly, whereas with the Black Death, you dies painfully yet slowly! Cures... Take A Live Frog
And Put It On Your Sores. One of the cures was this, you would place a life frog on your buboes,
this was meant to take the posion out and risk the percentage of the Black Death killing you. This
cure wouldn t work however the peseants didn t know that as they had no science and technoliogy!
This showas that the Black Death was still a disasster however some may disagree as it hos now

Management Information System
Student: Irene Provenzano

Introduction

The aim of this assignment is to produce a report about the Management Information System used
within the organization of my choice.

The organization I choose is Starbucks Coffee Company ltd, where I have been working for the last
two years as a Shift Manager.

The aim of this report is to identify two Management Information Systems used in Starbucks and
how the MIS facilitate problem solving.

This report describes hardware and software used to obtain, store and analyze data.

The last part of the report includes possible weakness in the company s system, how they could be
resolved and what possible training could be provided to help staff to cope with new technologies.

A start of day and end of day is run into the system on a daily base.

Shift managers can access cash management functions that are used to count tills, modify or correct
transactions and to prepare daily bank deposit.

A menu of available reports is available on a report menu.

The Store manager can access these reports to track sales, find out customer transactions within
different hours range, to check sale by product category, to record wastage, to carry a financial audit.

All this information is relevant for Store Managers to identify business requirements and customer
needs, to identify peak time in the store, to increase or amend product ordering, to control wastage
and track stock and decide whether is necessary to cut labour.

Managers can access staff information and personal details in the work station, they can insert new
partners, terminate partners, maintain employee records, track employee s training and process
payroll.

The payroll process transfers information to the support centre in order to pay partners.

Store Manager and the shift supervisors can use the IRIS System to process electronic ordering for
food, stationery, packaging.

The IRIS System can also use e mail set up for communicating with London Support centre and other
stores within the district and others.

The Fundamental functions of the role of managers are five:

Planning is possibly the most important managerial function.

Introduction
Osmosis is the movement (diffusion) of water across a semi permeable membrane from a region of
lower solute concentration to a region of higher solute concentration to achieve equilibrium (Bonney,
2014). Although this function appears to be very simple and habitual, all living organisms require
osmosis to survive, as osmosis is a key transport mechanism that allows for the absorption of vital ...

The concentration gradient will induce water molecules from a lower region of solute
concentration to displace to a higher region of solute concentration. Ultimately, the volume of the
more concentrated side grows after osmosis (K. Lerner and B. Lerner, 2004). For example, if the
cylinder of parsnip is placed into a hypertonic (more concentrated) solution, the water molecules
inside the cell will displace out of the parsnip to dilute the saline solution; causing the parsnip to
plasmolyze and lose its mass (Bonney, 2014). Likewise, if the parsnip is placed in a hypotonic (less
concentrated) solution, a large volume of water will displace into the parsnip in order to dilute the
contents within the parsnip (Bonney, 2014). This large intake of water causes the cylinder of
parsnip to gain mass until it reaches the maximum osmotic pressure (Bonney, 2014).
There are numerous important variables in this experiment that must be controlled in order to
achieve the most accurate results. Firstly, the temperature of the solution must be maintained at a
constant temperature of 22°C. Higher temperatures cause higher rates of osmosis (Nagel, 2002).
Therefore, all trials must have solutions that are maintained at the same temperature to ensure that
they all have the same rate of osmosis. This guarantees that the parsnip cylinders will increase by the
same masses relative to the
Social Constraints In 50 Shades Of Grey
Christian Grey is the name that got American s talking about the 2011 book 50 Shades of Grey, and
had many questioning their sexual interests. Sometimes I wonder if there s something wrong with
me. Perhaps I ve spent too long in the company of my literary romantic heroes, and consequently my
ideals and expectations are far too high. the lead character Anastasia says reflecting on her love life
(James, 2011). The series focuses on the growth of a relationship between Anastasia and Christian
Grey, that leads the audience into the sexual culture of bondage, domination/discipline, submission
/sadism, and masochism (BDSM). Blown away by the theatrical sexual encounters with Christian,
Anastasia finds love in a non traditional setting. Maybe Anastasia... Show more content on

BDSM seems to be a more theatrical fulfillment of one s sexual discovery and an escape from
societal expectations. Whether we are slaves to our masters, or slaves to our jobs and other social
obligations we are submissive to some degree. I further engage into the ideas that though BDSM
seems unnatural, violent, and foreign that maybe it is an elaborate representation of our everyday
life. Yoko Ono said in an interview once that When you are suffering, you become more
understanding about yourself, but also about other people s sufferings too. That s the first step to
understand somebody is to understand their sufferings. So then love follows. (Vallmer, Yoko Ono on
Lennon, Love, Feminism, and Japan ). Relating this quote back to BDSM, maybe it is through this
pain exposure that some are able to better understand themselves and/or the people around them.
That with this pain they learn to better trust those around them, communicate more effectively, and
be open to the ideas to each experience they encounter, whether it that be in or out of the

The Power of Bloggers and the Magnitude of the Blogosphere

What is a blog? Blog is a web based writing space, an online journal, a virtual forum; it s self
maintained web page that provide a list of links to other web sites along with comments and critics
about the links; it s a site containing chronologically ordered information, both personal and
impersonal. It s something new something that will change the way we write just like the way the
invention of paper and printing press have influenced our culture. There are many ways to describe
what the blog is or what it serves, but a single word can contain everything that blog represents; and
that is LINK . This link can be as small as a bridge between a person to another; but ... Show more

we find a thousand years of self discipline and esthetic training, which went along with the effort to
respect the gifts of the spirit and to deepen the inner life 1.

It almost sounds like carrying out a ritual as if the printing press were a sacrificial object. In
contrast, nowadays, the installation process of the blogging is a simple automated process, which
involves ability to type on QWERTY keyboards and use internet, thus people with the least skill
can easily become a blogger. For some bloggers, weblog can serves simply as a space for daily
journals or a quick memo of their thoughts, since the main attribute of the weblog is personal
expression. Nonetheless, the blogging software is being commercialized and marketed for
business purpose. So far, few businesses have adopted blogging for use by employees on company
time... John Robb, president and chief operating officer of UserLand Software Inc., which develops
blogging technology, envisions individual workers using blogging tools to jot down their thoughts
during the course of the day and as a platform for collaboration among colleagues. A doctor might

Oil Resources in Canada Essay
In today s world humans are consuming massive amounts of fossil fuels. The top five oil
consuming countries in the world are the usual suspects. These include the United States, China,
Japan, India and Russia. Canada comes in at number 10 with a daily consumption of 2,287
thousand barrels per day. There are three major types of fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas. These
resources were formed during the Carboniferous Period 360 286 million years ago. During this
time earth was covered in swamps with large amounts of plants and waters filled with algae. When
these plants and trees began to die they would form layers of peat. Hundreds and thousands of years
would pass adding sand and other materials on top of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sub bituminous coal is a mixture of Lignite and Bituminous. This coal has a lower sulfur content
which makes it a popular choice as a cleaner burning fuel for electricity and space heating.
Bituminous coal is black in color and has the second highest heating value. This coal is used
primarily in electric power generation, as well as heat and power applications in the
manufacturing sector. Anthracite coal is a glossy black coal. This coal has the highest heating
value out of all the coal types. Anthracite is the hardest coal and is used for home heating and
steel production. Canada has large coal deposits and it is their largest most abundant fossil fuel.
Canada has all four types of coal which more than 90% of the deposits are located in the western
provinces. Canada has an estimated 6.6 billion tons of coal that could be mined. Mining coal in
Canada takes place across four different provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and
Nova Scotia. In these provinces there are a total of 24 coal producing mines. British Columbia is
the leading province with 10 mines in operation. The province of Alberta has a total of 9 coal
mines, while Saskatchewan has 3 and Nova Scotia has 2 mines in operation. Coal mining in Canada
is done by surface mining. There are two different styles of surface mining which are strip mining or
open pit mining (CAC, 2013).
