DETERMINING:
Specific Heat Capacity of Unknown Metals
Using a Coffee Cup Calorimeter
by: Kizza Gale Taguiam, Satsuki Rustia, and Nadine Guardiano
In this activity, we will determine the specific
heat capacities of three different metals using
a coffee cup calorimeter. The specific heat
capacity of a substance tells us how much
heat is needed to raise the temperature of
one gram of that substance by one degree
Celsius. By using a coffee cup calorimeter,
which is a simple device that helps measure
the heat transferred in a reaction, we can
figure out how much heat is gained or lost by
the metal when placed in water.
In this experiment, we will heat the metal
samples and then place them into the
calorimeter filled with water. By recording the
temperature changes in the water, we can
calculate the specific heat of the metal using a
basic heat equation. This experiment will help
us better understand the relationship
between heat, temperature, and energy
