The Battle Of Gettysburg And American Civil War
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought over the first three days in July 1863, in and around the town
of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee led the Army of Northern Virginia, while Union Major General
George Gordon Meade commanded the Army of the Potomac. The Battle of Gettysburginvolved the
largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war s turning point. With
his army in high spirits after a victory in the battle of Chancellorsville, General Robert E. Lee
decided to move north into Maryland and Pennsylvania. Lee s goal was to move the war out of war
torn Virginia, and try to move it north to threaten northern cities and stem the North s appetite for
war. After getting wind of Lee s plan, President Abraham Lincolnsent Major General Joseph Hooker
s Army of the Potomac as a response. A loss at Chancellorsville lead President Lincoln to replace
Major General Joseph Hooker with Major General George Gordon Meade just three days before the
Battle of Gettysburg. Once in command Major General Meade moved his army to try to keep them
in between Washington D.C. and General Lee s army. All the information General Lee had on Union
troops made him think that most the Army of the Potomac was sitting near the Rappahannock River
in eastern Virginia not really paying attention to his troops movement towards Culpeper; about a 100
miles to the west. He also read
Ambiguity In A Clean Well Lighted Place
A Solace for the Lonely On stressful evenings people often find themselves walking in circles
hunting for an escape; as seen in Ernest Hemingway s, A Clean, Well Lighted Place , which
exemplifies the life of an old man and two waiters. The old man is doing exactly what most
people do when they have reached rock bottom. He is hunting for peace in his life and has decided
to find such solace drinking in a local café. The little café in the short storysymbolizes a safe zone
for people who feel unwanted, alone, and in despair. Hemingway uses the younger waiter as a
foil for the older waiter to emphasize the opposing personalities and beliefs of the waiters. The
ambiguity in the dialog between the two waiters evolved into a scandal relating to reproductions
of the short story. The café is the only solace for the older waiter and all those who need a light
for the night (Page 145). They yearn for a place to feel wanted and not be alone. The younger
waiter does not understand the need for a clean and pleasant café, so he tells the old man,
Hombre, there are bodegas open all night long (145). As the older waiter would agree, bars have a
different ambiance than cafés. Cafés are nice, quiet, and quaint establishments where one can relax
and forget their troubles. The older waiter states, It is necessary that the place be clean and pleasant.
You do not want music. Certainly you do not want music (146). Bars usually provide music for their

The two waiters exemplify the two ends of the spectrum of people. The oldest is the lonely and the
younger is the happily married. This short story makes the differences of bars to cafés and the
lonely to the happily married prominent. When people feel unwanted, alone, and in despair, they
know they can find solace in the clean well lighted
Samuel Becket s Waiting On Godot
In the times leading up to, during, and after World War I the world changed. As a reflection of
that change writers began experimenting with perspective, time and order, form, etc. Literature
wasn t as straightforward; there were metaphors within metaphors, stories without clear
beginnings middles and ends, poets used mixed meters and free verse became common
becoming what is known as the modernist era. Around World War II the same thing happened
again, but taken to the extreme. This was known as the postmodern era and writers began to use
their works to convey their sense of how strange the world around them was. The works that will
be discussed are Samuel Becket s Waiting on Godot, a play about two friends who wait for the
titular Godot over two day with the second questioning the existence of the first. House of Leaves,
by Mark Danielewski, is a cult classic about man trying to understand a manuscript about a movie
about a family who moves into a house that s bigger on the inside the the outside, this novel is
special because of how it s printed, and it s use of multiple narrators, and the final piece, Infinite
Jest, by David Foster Wallace, is a bafflingly complex piece with four major interwoven narratives
and nearly a hundred pages of footnotes, some of which have footnotes within themselves. In this
paper these three books will be discussed in detail and, through the review, the characteristics of
postmodernism will be identified. Additionally, how the writing
The Chrysanthemums
John Steinback created a masterpiece that describes a most peculiar case of a strong minded
woman bound by a rural area during the 1920 s and 30 s. The narrator writes about a rather
troubled protagonist who seems to have a lot of ambition built up inside to change her ways of just
being an old fashioned marital wife. Her biggest problem could be the fact she is being repressed
by the primitive ideology that men work and women nurture. Studying the characters and point of
view of The Chrysanthemums allows for a better understanding to how truly alone our protagonist,
Elisa, may feel. The protagonist is a round character who is first introduced when she is in her jail
cell, the garden. The narrator describes Elisa s questionable outfit that
A Orphanage Trips By Aussie Schools Are Doing More Harm...
In Orphanage trips by Aussie schools are doing more harm than good , published in The
Conversation, Karleen Gribble argues to Australian Private School administrators to not allow
students volunteer in orphanages because they are detrimental to the orphans wellbeing. While
only sent to complete building or maintenance work, these students regularly end up becoming a
part of the children s lives only to abandon them end of the trip and another round of students to
become the always changing presence of caregivers. Children need the permanence of a constant
caregiver to make sure they develop emotionally and psychologically normally which they do not
receive at orphanages. Without one particular caregiver to bond and care for their wellbeing, the
children in the orphanages are easily taken advantage of or abused. Orphanages lead to the
mistreatment and disregard of children when keeping them with their families or foster care is
cheaper and better for their wellbeing. The donations are used to give a great education to the
children, although because the standard is better than most people in the area children are
abandoned at orphanages to give them a better chance. Some parents are persuaded to give up their
children by individuals who want to take advantage of the foreign donations. Children learn ways to
gain attention from adults which leads to them being seen as joyful and openness. This
misperception leads students to gain a superficial knowledge of the children s
Battlefield Medicine During The Civil War
If you were a soldier in the Battle of Gettysburg do you think that you would ve survived? The
battle between the Union and the Confederacy lasted three days, from July 1, 1863 to July 3,
1863 and in the end the Union was victorious. The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle of
the Civil War. The medical knowledge and equipment that the surgeons had back then were no
match the types of illnesses and injuries that the soldiers had. The people that were that got shot
during the Civil War, either had to get a body part amputated, got their gunshot wound covered
with a bandage, opened up the wound to get the bullet out and then patch them up. Three people
from The Killer Angels that got shot and just got their wound wrapped with bandage were John
Buford, Buster Kilrain, and a runaway slave. John Buford who was thirty seven years was the
Brigadier General for the Union and was a cavalry soldier. In the novel it states, He had been hit
once in the legs arm and the bleeding had stopped but the genuine pain was just the beginning. They
had wrapped the arm and put his coat back on and he did not show injury (146). Without proper
inspection of the wound and removing it, this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our knowledge has increased on treatment. We are more sanitary than before. Before the
equipment was unwashed and reused so diseases would spread. Now we thoroughly wash our
equipment and wounds have a slimmer chance of infection. More equipment have been made to
treat injuries. There was less equipment to use back then so they would be low on supplies easily
and faster. John Buford, Buster Kilrain and the slave were all treated the same way. With the
advances that we ve overtime since the Civil War the people who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg
would have had a better chance of survival, fewer risks of infection, disease prevention, and ways to
deal with the
Decision Making That Permits Influence An Investment Abroad
INTRODUCTION:
The world is changing more rapidly; consequently organizations are promptly the way they operate
as well to ensure survival and growth in high velocity turbulent markets. To succeed an organization
has to anticipate, react and even lead in terms of strategic decisions to enhance profits. It is
pertinent to understand that a series of systematic decisions is undertaken before an investment
abroad is carried on with. According to Sundaram Stewart 1992 there is a system of decision
making that permits influence which refers to the firm s ability to coordinate and control
endogenous organizational variables and quasi endogenous market variables (coupled with
exogenous factors (e.g exchange rates, regulations, tariffs and political set up). Investment decisions
are critical for the performance of an organization. From a micro perspective, they are fundamental
for the growth of individual companies, increasing their efficiency by reducing per unit costs,
enhancing profits by tapping new market segments and exploiting more resources. At a company s
level, an investment decision abroad is much more complicated and requires more research; it is
more of a multi criteria process taking into account numerous factors. These are primarily economic
and risk factors, political and social environment and government regulations. Naturally, the effects
of these factors on decisions of individual companies may vary significantly. Each of the risk has
been separately defined
The Theory Of Classical Conditioning
In this assignment I will be looking at the Behaviourist perspective with Ivan Pavlov s (1902)
theory about classical conditioning. I will be discussing how I have used human development and
learning perspectives in my placement to support young people in their personal and social
development with providing a case study about them. I will be writing about how the theory
demonstrates effective youth and community work practice including the five pillars of youth work.
Behaviourists look at behaviour as a response to a certain event. They think our behaviour is
concluded by our surroundings which produces stimuli to we respond, and the situations we have
been in the past causes us to respond to stimuli in certain ways. Classical conditioningis one of the
varieties of behaviourism. A psychologist called Ivan Pavlov(1902) looked at the way dog salivate
when being fed. He thought that there are some things that dogs do not need to learn and that dogs
do not been to salivate whenever they see food. The motion of the dog salivating was compelled into
the dogs mind. A Behaviourist would label this as an unconditional response which is a reaction that
required no form of learning. The unconditioned stimulus is the food and the unconditioned response
is when the dog salivates. For humans, there are techniques that are used that involve classical
conditioning. For example, a teacher can make the learning environment positive for a class full of
students to let them overcome their
