Regency Gentlemen Amusements Essay
Regency Gentlemen Amusements

The Regency Era, generally referring to the time period of 1800 1820, was undeniably a time of
pleasure seeking and over indulgence. The Regency era represented a time when the current ruler,
mad King George III, was incapable of performing his royal duties. Due to his madness, the King s
son the Prince of Wales, a Regent and heir to the throne, was appointed to govern. The Prince of
Wales was designated Regent in 1811 (Channel4). During this era people of the upper class had a
great deal of leisure time, and their major task seemed to be to entertain themselves. Some of the
more popular amusements of rich and fashionable Regency gentlemen were boxing, cockfighting,
and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The competition was not finished until one man lay unconscious, and this often took hours (channel
4). Despite the popularity of boxing, cockfighting was still considered to be the period s most
widespread sport.

Cockfighting ranged across all social classes. Tournaments were held between gentlemen, often
geographically based with one area playing another. The cockpits were a common place where all
social classes gathered to place bets and watch the match. Although even the smallest town had a
cockpit, Regency gentlemen were known to hold contests at their own estate. This pastime was a
common practice and even influenced furniture makers to offer cockfighting chairs (GI).

Unlike bare knuckle bouts between people, cocks were precisely paired by weight in all the more
heavily staked cockfights. Human training was elementary when compared to the training of
gamecock. The cocks often had bone or metal spurs strapped over the birds beak to insure a fight to
the death. Cockfighting began to diminish in England only after The Royal Society for Cruelty to
Animals began to bring actions in the late 1830s, based on an 1835 Act against animal cruelty (GI).
With boxing and cockfighting s growing interest, both created an obsession with gambling.

Couples Retreat Essay
Couples retreat
Getting married is the most amazing thing that happens in everyone s life. If you are in love and
then sharing this eternal bond, then you are the luckiest couple ever, but if this is the arranged gift
from your parents and family then it becomes the responsibility and duty, to make your partner
aware that you love them and understand them. Generally, in marriages, no matter whether it is
love or arranged, a time comes when the eternal endearing and intimacy is lost because now they
start behaving more like two people tied in the knot of responsibility, rather than the couple who
supposed to love each other, care about each other and be the shock absorber if problem arise.
But, as you are human and this is by default is your tendency to get carried away with the worst
rather than the good, and you start keeping check on the duties and responsibilities you shared
rather than the most romantic days you shared. Being a husband you say, I am the man of the
house, I earn, I hope and still you complain that I don t give you the time!!!! Being a woman, how
can you stay behind because the note on which your husband is boasting that he goes to duty and
run an office, it is because of you as you cook a meal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Suffering Of Christians By Ascetic Christians
Christians that devoutly abstained form worldly pleasures were known as ascetic christians. These
christians recognized a distinct difference between the body and the soul. Early ascetic christians
privileged the soul over the body because the body was a symbol of mortality and sin, while the
soul was a symbol of spirituality and salvation. Therefore, ascetic christians imposed suffering on
their bodies and renounced pleasure in order to draw closer to the divine nature of God by
strengthening the soul. These sufferings included abstaining from sex, giving up material goods,
and fasting. Different levels of sufferings were experienced by ascetic christians and the audience
of the works factored into the levels suffering described in our readings. The suffering of christians
written for ascetic christians that were wealthy was vastly different than that of ascetic christians
that simply wanted to become extreme ascetics or better christians. One of the means of suffering,
or actually, renouncing of pleasure practiced by ascetic christians was abstaining from sex. The
abstaining of sex was used to become closer to God by denying the worldly pleasure of sex. Sex
satisfied the body, but ascetic christians wanted to strengthen and satisfy their souls. They believed
that sex was easy to exploit and that it was the cause of many lustful sins. This proved that the body
was truly mortal and the cause of sin, and to strengthen the soul ascetic christians had to abstain and

Supernatural Aid In Le Morte D Arthur
What is a supernatural aid? According to gordannapier.com, a supernatural aid is defined as help
given to the hero from someone who is endowed with abilities beyond the normal. They may or
may not give the hero some talisman to help him on the journey. Merlin from Le Morte D Arthur is
a supernatural aid who circumlocutory helps the hero by using his abnormal abilities to protect and
give advice. Merlyn from from The Once and Future Kingis also a supernatural aid who uses his
anomalistic abilities to protect and give advice, but he directly helps the hero. Both stories involve
supernatural aids, but each help the hero in a contradistinctive way. Although Merlinappears as
Arthur s metaphysical aid in both Le Morte D Arthur and The Once and... Show more content on

To illustrate, Merlyn had remembered to give him the proper smell for the nest for if he had smelled
of any other nest, they would have killed him at once. This illustrates how Merlyn protected Arthur
by equipping him with essential aromas to avoid injuries or ruination. Lastly, Merlin in Le Morte D
Arthur protects Arthur by causing the Archbishop to surround Arthur with knights until he is
accepted. The author states, that we let purvey ten knights, men of good fame, and they to keep this
sword which shows how Merlin counseled the Archbishop into providing protection for Arthur.
Nevertheless, Merlyn in The Once and Future King protects Arthur by removing Arthur and
transforming him back before the ants go to war. To further illustrate, The horrible armies were on
the point of joining battle, to dispute the imaginary boundary between their glass trays when
Merlyn came to be there. As far as protection, Merlin in Le Morte D Arthur provides indirect
protection through others; whereas, Merlyn in The Once and Future King provides more direct or
hands on advice. Direct protection, in my opinion, is better than indirect protection because it is
more reliable, and it goes through less people which lessens the chance of alterations. Second of all,
both Merlin in Le Morte D Arthur and Merlyn from The Once and Future King provide advice.

A Telephone Call Dorothy Parker Analysis
A Telephone Call by Dorothy Parker Dorothy Parker was born in 1893 at her parents summer
home in New Jersey. Unfortunately, her childhood was very rough. Her mother and her step
mother died when Parker was still a child. She attended a Catholic grammar school, but ended her
formal education by the time she was fourteen years of age. In her late teenage years another
catastrophe hit, her uncle was on the notorious Titanic ship that sunk and he did not make it.
Parker s series of unfortunate events did not finish, her father passed away a year later. Parker sold
her first poem to Vanity Fair and her first collection of poetry Enough Rope was published in 1926
and became a best seller. She later worker for Vogue when she was twenty two years old. She wrote
poems for newspapers and magazines while she worked for Vogue, however she joined Vanity Fair

stockbroker which lasted about ten years (Poets.org). Her marriage, however, was quite turbulent
and rocky. As an adult, Parker suffered severe depression and alcoholism. These issues led her to
several suicide attempts that she thankfully survived. After her failed first marriage, she married
an actor writer in 1934. This marriage lasted for thirteen years before both sides decided to divorce,
but they remarried three years later. As if Parker had enough tragedies in her life, her husband died
of an overdose and Parker died at the ripe

Essay on With the setting of the sun
With the setting of the sun

In F. Scott Fitzgerald s novel, The Great Gatsby, there is a constant feeling of movement and the
desire to get away. Nick, Gatsby, Wilson,
Tom and Daisy all move, or have the intention of moving. Not only does this movement seem to
foreshadow events in the book, but it also seems to lead to the conclusion that society as a whole in
the 1920 s was rather unstable and was undergoing constant change. Not all the characters move in
the same way, and this shows how different their backgrounds and lifestyles are. The main
movement seems to be from west to east. Throughout the decades man is said to be progressing
through the steps of evolution and toward the setting sun, or east to west. The characters ... Show

Nick says, [h]e talked a lot about the past and
I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into
loving Daisy. (117) This shows how time could never change his dream, and that Gatsby feels that
if he talks about the past then he will be able to change the future for the better. The sun also stands
for power and greatness, which made Jay Gatsby shine right through Jimmie Gatz. He starts of
engulfed in darkness, as his dream does not exist. From there he seems to be obsessed with this
reverie, and effectively kills off Jimmie Gatz and creates Jay Gatsby.
This new personality is formed when the sun rises, bathing him in light. Jay Gatsby sprang from his
Platonic conception of himself (104), and even with this change he still believed that the rock of
the world was founded securely on a fairy s wing. (105) This new light blinds the people that look
at him, and covers up his old self. Although it covers him, some people like Mr. Sloane see him as
Jimmie Gatz, and are disgusted by it. The first time Tom meets Gatsby is when he, Mr. Sloane and
a young woman stop by his house while out riding. Gatsby tells Tom that he knows Daisy, to which
Tom states later, I may be old fashioned in my ideas but women run around too much these days to
suit me. They meet all kinds of crazy fish. (110)

The Three Types Of Court Management In The Criminal...
In the criminal justice system, there are three types of important court managers. Without one of
these court managers the court would be working slower than what it needs to work. The three
types of the curt managers are the clerk of court, the judge, and the court administrator. Each of
these managers have a very important role they have to play to ensure that the court would run
smoothly while is in session. The clerk of court is An elected or appointed court officer responsible
for maintaining the written records of the court and for supervising or performing the clerical tasks
necessary to conduct judicial business (Neubauer Fradella, 2014, p.535). For example, sometimes
people might confuse what a clerk of the court does with what a law clerkdoes or even a court
reporter. The clerk of the court does take another role while trial is going on, they maintain court
calendars and handle and assemble documents such as subpoenas, judicial orders, writs, injunctions,
and judgments (Krow, 2017). They review law suits and motions that are submitted to the court. The
second important court manager is the judge. Many people put judges as the highest part of the
criminal justice system. This is because of the power that they have. It all start From arrest to final
disposition, the accused face judges whenever decisions affecting their futures are made (Neubauer
Fradella, 2014, p.199). Some of the things that a judge can do is set bail for you, revoke your bail,
