Brief Narrative Report The National Reading Program at Bagong Buhay A
Integrated School successfully addressed literacy challenges
through structured reading interventions. In the first quarter,
teachers assessed students' reading levels and provided
various materials and strategies to support literacy
development. Initial progress showed that 25% of identified
non-readers improved in basic reading skills. By the second
quarter, structured remediation sessions and interactive
reading activities further strengthened reading fluency, with
50% of non-readers able to recognize words and read simple
sentences. Teachers also engaged parents to encourage
reading at home, leading to increased student motivation.
During the third quarter, the program focused on
comprehension and vocabulary development through
thematic reading sessions and peer-assisted learning. The
"Reading Buddies" approach, book fairs, and storytelling
contests further boosted students' confidence and
engagement. By this time, 75% of struggling readers showed

significant improvement, demonstrating the effectiveness of
targeted interventions. However, sustaining reading fluency
among learners with minimal home support remained a
challenge, prompting teachers to implement a reward system
to encourage consistent reading practice.
The fourth quarter marked the culmination of efforts,
successfully reducing the number of non-readers to nearly
zero. Over 90% of students reached independent reading
proficiency, showcasing their progress through the "Reading
Festival" with read-aloud performances and storytelling
competitions. While challenges in fluency and comprehension
persisted, continuous reinforcement plans were set to
integrate reading activities into daily lessons. The school's
literacy initiatives proved to be highly effective, ensuring that
learners continue developing strong reading skills and a
lifelong love for reading.
Activities First Quarter
The implementation of the National Reading Program at
Bagong Buhay A Integrated School commenced successfully
in the first quarter. Teachers conducted initial assessments to
identify learners' reading proficiency levels, categorizing them
into beginning, developing, and proficient readers. Various
reading materials, such as storybooks, flashcards, and
phonics-based exercises, were provided to engage learners
in improving their reading skills. Daily guided reading
sessions and peer-assisted learning strategies were also
introduced to foster a collaborative learning environment.
As a result, significant engagement was observed among
students, with many displaying an increased interest in
reading activities. Teachers reported that struggling readers
showed gradual improvement in recognizing letters and
blending sounds. Additionally, the school launched the "Read
Aloud Wednesdays," where students practiced reading aloud
to develop confidence and fluency. By the end of the quarter,
preliminary data indicated that at least 25% of identified non-
readers had shown measurable progress in basic reading
skills.
Challenges were noted, particularly in sustaining student
motivation and addressing the needs of learners who required
intensive intervention. Some students still needed additional
support, particularly those with limited exposure to reading
materials at home. To address this, teachers collaborated

with parents to encourage reading practices beyond the
classroom. Moreover, the strategies were adjusted to
incorporate more interactive and play-based learning to
sustain student engagement.
Moving forward, the school plans to intensify intervention
strategies for struggling readers by implementing one-on-one
reading tutorials. More differentiated reading materials will be
introduced to cater to students' varied reading levels. The
goal for the second quarter is to reduce the number of non-
readers by at least 50% through targeted instruction and
reinforcement activities.
Second Quarter
During the second quarter, reading efforts were further
intensified to achieve zero non-readers in the school.
Structured reading remediation sessions were conducted
before and after regular classes. Teachers utilized phonemic
awareness activities, sight word recognition drills, and
storytelling sessions to reinforce students' comprehension
and fluency. Group reading activities, such as buddy reading
and shared reading, were also incorporated to encourage
peer support.
Significant progress was recorded, with 50% of previously
identified non-readers now able to recognize words and read
simple sentences. Several students demonstrated increased
fluency and confidence in reading aloud. The "Read Aloud
Wednesdays" initiative saw higher participation, and students
were eager to volunteer as readers. Teachers noted that
students who received consistent support exhibited
remarkable improvements in reading speed and
comprehension.
Despite these achievements, some students still struggled
with comprehension skills and word recognition, particularly
those with learning difficulties. To address this, small-group
reading sessions were implemented, along with digital
reading resources such as audiobooks and interactive
reading apps to make learning more engaging.
For the third quarter, the focus will be on refining
comprehension strategies and deepening vocabulary
acquisition. Teachers will introduce thematic reading activities
and contextual learning to help students understand and
retain information better. The goal is to ensure that at least
75% of the learners reach independent reading levels by the

next quarter.
Third Quarter
The third quarter continued to build on previous successes,
focusing on improving students’ comprehension and
vocabulary skills. Thematic reading sessions were introduced
where students explored different genres, including fables,
informational texts, and poetry. Interactive discussions and
summarization exercises were incorporated to enhance
understanding and critical thinking.
By this time, 75% of students who were initially classified as
non-readers had demonstrated significant improvements.
Many were able to read paragraphs fluently, answer
comprehension questions accurately, and infer meanings
from context. The "Reading Buddies" approach, where
advanced readers assisted struggling ones, proved effective
in boosting confidence and motivation. Additionally, book fairs
and storytelling contests were organized to make reading
more enjoyable for students.
However, some challenges remained, particularly in
sustaining engagement among learners with minimal support
at home. Teachers continued to communicate with parents,
emphasizing the importance of regular reading practice. A
reward system was implemented to recognize student
progress, further motivating learners to read consistently.
For the final quarter, the focus will shift toward achieving a
100% literacy rate among students. More intensive
interventions will be conducted for the remaining struggling
readers, ensuring that all students can read independently
before the academic year ends. The culminating activity will
be a "Reading Festival," where students will showcase their
reading skills through performances and presentations.
Fourth Quarter
The final quarter marked the culmination of efforts to achieve
zero non-readers. Intensive remediation sessions were
conducted, targeting the remaining students who needed
additional support. Cross-curricular reading activities were
integrated to strengthen comprehension, encouraging
students to apply their reading skills in different subjects.
By the end of the period, the school successfully reduced the
number of non-readers to nearly zero, with all students
demonstrating basic reading proficiency. Assessment results
showed that over 90% of learners could read independently,

a significant improvement from the beginning of the year. The
"Reading Festival" served as the highlight, featuring read-
aloud performances, poetry recitations, and storytelling
competitions. Students proudly showcased their reading
skills, reflecting their progress and newfound confidence.
Challenges such as maintaining reading fluency and
comprehension for all students were still noted. To sustain
progress, teachers recommended continuous reinforcement
of reading skills in the following academic year. Plans were
set to integrate reading enhancement activities into daily
classroom routines and establish a reading corner in every
classroom.
Overall, reading efforts at Bagong Buhay A Integrated School
proved to be a resounding success. The collaborative efforts
of teachers, parents, and students contributed to remarkable
improvements in literacy. Moving forward, the school aims to
sustain its literacy initiatives, ensuring that all learners
continue to develop strong reading skills and a lifelong love
for reading.
