Compare And Contrast Egyptian And Mayan Culture
The Ancient Maya and Egyptian cultures had many similarities, but some differences. The
Ancient Maya Civilization was at its peak at around 250A.D. The ancient Egyptian cultures peak
was 3200 to 2700 B.C. Although trade and Agriculture were a big part of the Maya and Egyptian
success, they were also known for their use of agriculture, the creation of the calendar, and the
Glyphs, and Codex. The Mayan people had the closest calendar to the modern day world calendar.
Also, the Mayan culture had a separate religious calendar. The Mayan people were off by only a
few short minutes. On the other hand, the Egyptian people were off by about five hours. The
Mayan people were also famous for their introduction of time. They believed that time was carried
on the back of the Gods. People believe that unlike Egyptian people, the Maya people developed the
calendar with no help from the Gods. The Maya and Egyptian people had their time and calendar
very accurate. Another important key to the success of both these thriving communities was trade
and agriculture. The impact trade and agriculture had in the Mayan and Egyptian community was
amazing. They both helped link the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Glyphs, a hieroglyphic symbol, was not carved into stone by the Mayans. The Egyptians, on the other
hand, carved Glyphs into temples walls or pyramids. Codex were carved Glyphs into stone. Both the
Codex and Glyphs used the idea of Glyphs. Also, they both used pictographs and were both
important writing methods to the successful communities. The Mayan and Egyptian cultures, both
had very similar ideas but had many differences. The Mayan civilization fell to the ground by the
will of themselves collapsing. On the other hand, the Egyptian empire was taken over and fell to the
Romans. The Egyptian civilization lasted for more than thousands of years, but the Mayan only
lasted for a couple of thousand
Theoretical Traditions and Community Development
In this assignment I will discuss key theoretical traditions from social theory such as Social
Darwinism, Functionalism, Liberalism, Marxist theory, Feminism and Social movement theory and
discuss how they relate to the practice of community development.

Social theory seeks to explain change in society, how it develops, what factors facilitate and inhibit
it and what results from it. Social theory can be viewed as a set of tools which are used in
constructing our own explanations of what is happening in the society around us (owlnet.rice.edu,
2010).

Community development draws upon social theories to better understand the society around us.
Community development is a structured intervention that gives communities greater control over ...

They are as follows:

Social Darwinism The application of Darwinism to the study of human society, specifically a theory
in sociology that individuals or groups achieve advantage over others as the result of genetic or
biological superiority (answers.com, 2010).
Social Darwinism theory argues that people are not equal and that survival of the fittest is the
natural law of humankind. The best will survive and procreate in order to produce a better race of
people. Race is key to Social Darwinism, just as certain people are less intelligent and capable
certain races are also less able. Social Darwinism has been debunked by modern theorists yet is
sometimes expressed in the attitudes of people today. An understanding of how social Darwinist
theory has developed and been applied can help a community development worker make sense of
the ways in which certain groups in society are treated as inferior by others. Community
development focuses on increasing resources to minority groups and powerless people such as
Indigenous people and poor people. (Kenny,1999: pg,no:78)

Functionalism The underlying assumption of functionalism is that various parts of society are
interrelated and when put together form a complete whole. Functionalism compares the healthy
functioning of society to the healthy functioning of the human body, if one part is sick then the
whole is disadvantaged. Functionalists believe that society needs to remain the same
I Am The Product Of Clark County Educational System Essay
Reflection
Introduction
Writing has never been my forte. Nevertheless, this is not to say that I could not write. Throughout
the semester with the assigned reading assignments and the given practical writing exercises I have
come to grasp a vague understanding, I had never been taught how to write essays correctly. I am the
product of Clark County Educational system. I have always struggled through my last classes and
hoped to get out of my struggles this semester. One the greatest challenges that I faced was the
distinction that existed among different types of writings that are performed within the English
language. I did not understand how the distinction between a narrative essay, report essay and an
analytical essay, argumentative essay, and reflective essay among other types of essays. I just
thought all was the same regarding content and structure.
Additionally, this semester has, however, had an influence on my writing skills and ability a great
deal. Before this class, I began my papers with plain facts. The readings and the writing conducted
throughout this semester have enabled me to understand the wrongs and the rights encompassed
within the English language. Before engaging in writing, I started by discussing my thoughts and
impressions with my peers or basically a brainstorming session. Finally, finishes up with a computer
search on the subject assigned. Furthermore, the overview and the in depth study conducted on the
topic was very helpful. I became
Jonathan Swift Satire
Satire Mini Unit: Questions
1.Swift identifies that there are too many impoverished children in the streets of Ireland, these
children are too much of a burden for their parents to handle.
2.When a poor child grows to the age of 1, they should be slaughtered, sold, eaten, and skinned to
provide clothing. This eliminates the need to feed more mouths and provides a way to benefit society.
3.This proposal will also prevent voluntary abortions and the murdering of bastard children.
4.Swift is using logos to appeal to the audience. He utilizes statistics and evidence to back up his
claims. He logically states how it is impossible to raise 120,000 children annually. He also states that
the children cannot provide for themselves and are just ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Swift talks about real world solutions to end Ireland s poverty. This is near the end of his satire and
his writing shifts to a more serious tone. This is a turning point in his article since he has caught the
attention of his audience, he is ready to show them how they can help bring Ireland out of poverty.
His purpose is to persuade the audience into listening to his ideas about ending poverty.
11. After everything Swift has said about sacrificing children and letting woman become breeders,
he states how he himself cannot give his child away, and how his wife is past breeding age. It is
fine for him to advocate this plan since he cannot lose anything. His child is already past the age of
1, and his wife cannot be a breeder. The irony here is that he himself cannot follow through with
everything he has said.
12. The purpose of this essay was to bring attention to the dire poverty crisis occurring in Ireland
during 1700s. Swift uses satire to convey his message in a funny and shocking article proposing
cannibalism. He utilizes the shock and awe factor to bring to light the suffering that occurs in
Ireland, he demonstrates how people are more than just a statistic. He exaggerates the
dehumanization in society to make readers think about compassion and kindness. This controversial
essay allowed him to successfully describe the real life conditions of Ireland in an interesting
Exploring the Purpose of the Indian Gaming Regulation Act...
When the word Native American is mentioned, the first thing most people will think of is Indian
gaming. As many people know, only Native Americans can conduct gaming while people from other
ethnicity cannot. This leads to the belief that it is an indirect way for the American government to
repay the tribal government for taking their lands. This is partially true. The right to conduct gaming
on reservations begins with the Indian Gaming Regulation Act (IGRA). Since its establishment in
1988, hundreds of tribes are able to negotiate an agreement with the governments to operate casinos
on reservation lands. However, this is not the only intention of IGRA. Although Congress says that
the real purpose of IGRA is to allow Indians to open... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was also created to ensure legality and to protect the financial interests of tribes (Light and
Rand, 44). IGRA is viewed differently among the Native and the non Native people. To many
Americans, IGRA is a compromise between the American government and the tribal government
because it enables tribes to support themselves, while it meets the Congress intention of opening
more jobs to control poverty related crimes. According to a survey by the National Indian
Gaming Association (NIGA) in 2006, as much as 75% of Americans believe that Indians benefit
from gaming ( The Economic Impact of Indian Gaming in 2006 ). It is approximated that the
tribal gaming industry generates $15.9 billion in revenue in 2003 ( National Indian Gaming
Association ), and has created over 550,000 jobs (Light and Rand, 85). Even though there is only
a small change in the number of crimes as a result of casinos, it is enough to conclude that crime
rates were reduced, but not in an overwhelming way (Light and Rand, 97). On the contrary, Native
Americans believe that it is a one sided negotiations that gives the state and federal government
power over tribal authority (Light and Rand, 3). IGRA limits the tribe s ability to fully express its
tribal sovereignty. Most people know that only Native Americans have the right to operate gaming,
however, they do not know how or why do they possess these rights. To understand this, one must

Southern Gothic Literature Analysis
Southern gothic literature is a genre that is set in the American south. Oxford Dictionaries
defines southern gothic literature as, Characterized by plots involving violence or hidden trauma,
eccentric and often psychologically troubled characters, and an atmosphere of repression and
decay. The genre is one of dark, complex stories that are full of grotesque themes, unpredictable
twists, and often include characters that are somewhat delusional. It is often packed with mystery
and intrigue, and like many of the characters in these stories, it is not always what meets the eye.
Throughout this paper, we ll be exploring some stories of this genre such as A Good Man is Hard
to Find and Good Country People , both by Flannery O Connor, as well as William Faulkner s A
Rose for Emily . Each one of these stories share similar elements when it comes to their settings,
themes, tones, and characters, but they are also each different in their own respects. These stories
each include a female character who is first thought to represent the image of a proper, southern
woman, but later is shown to be much more than that. Miss Emily, the Grandmother, and Joy Hulga
each challenge the common stereotypes of the lives of southern women and the values and beliefs of
the South as a whole. Southern gothicliterature is an extremely interesting genre to study, and there is
certainly nothing about these stories that is dull.
William Faulkner s A Rose for Emily is a great example of a true

Executive Branch Powers

administrative, official, and legal branches. The authoritative branch makes the law, the official

held separate from one another to guarantee that nobody branch could surpass the others in quest for

Similarities Between Dr Faustus And The Tempest
Magic vs. Magic In Marlowe s The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus and Shakespeare s The Tempest,
the two share several similarities when it comes to the control of magic. The main character Dr.
Faustus in Marlowe s play is a Renaissance scholar that has a strong desire to become famous. Dr.
Faustus wants to be a powerful magician and is willing to do whatever it takes to do so. The
supernatural aspect throughout Marlowe s Doctor Faustus focuses on how Dr. Faustus is willing to
sell his soul in return for him to become a powerful magician. Likewise, in Shakespeare s play The
TempestProspero uses his magicfor the pursuit of power. Prospero s magic is the power of nature. In
The Tempest Prospero uses his magic to create a dramatic storm, to manipulate his enemies and to
arrange for his daughter to marry the Prince of Naples. The two works both have similar parallels
between the use of magic and how they acquire it, the connection of the time frame, and the realistic
supernatural aspects throughout the two plays. Although, the two have many similar characteristics,
the two plays have two dramatically different conclusions. In The Tragedy of Doctor Faustus and
The Tempest the two central characters share one prominent similarity. The two characters Prospero
and Faustus both have the control of magical powers. Their supernatural abilities rely on the way
they use them. The supernatural in The Tempest work is very much based on the idea that a man
can control the supernatural with

Childbirth And The Italian Renaissance
Childbirth and Childbearing in Renaissance Italy for upper status woman, was far different than
what childbearing is compared to today s standards. In renaissance Italy it was said that woman
only had one purpose and that purpose was to have many legitimate babies, especially for the
nobility and upper status couples. From having these babies, the family could inherit a lot of
wealth (King, M. L., 2003). This differs greatly in todays society, as now woman s primary
function is not only to produce children. Woman today are seen as equals to men, and have a
larger significance than just having their husbands children. Childbearing in the Renaissance was
not as easy or as safe as it is today either, as we will further discuss. This paper will explain the role
of child birthing and bearing in the Italian Renaissance, everything from mortality rates, to wet
nurses and this differs from today s society. As mentioned before, the main role for woman in the
renaissance was to produce children for her husband and handle household affairs, this was proven
in the document by Alberti when he had said Furthermore, I made it a rule never to speak with her
of anything but household matters or of the children. Of these matters I spoke a great deal to
her...(Famiglia, D., 1996, pg 40). Thus showing the wife s role was greatly dependent on her house
and children. It was also important, especially in the nobility, that the children the wife gave birth to
were her husband s children. Her role
