CHAPTER 1

ME and MY OPINION

INTRODUCTION
Learning Objectives:
• Understand how to introduce yourself and others in English.
• Understand the social function and linguistic elements of introduction practices.
• Respond to the meaning of self-introduction texts.
• Compose oral and written texts about self-introduction.
• Ask questions about other people's personal information

We all must have been in an environment that we have never known before. For
example, when we are in a new school, new class, new complex or neighborhood
environment or a new work environment. In that situation, of course, we have to
socialize with other people around us who we have not known before. Of course,
in opening a relationship or connection with other people we do not know, we
must introduce ourselves first so that the communication process can be
established with each other and of course we will be able to get to know new
people around us. What do we usually do if we meet people we have never met
before? What should we say if we want to get to know new people in our
environment?
Now, Let’s look it up together the expressions can be used in introduction!

INTRODUCING MYSELF (SELF INTRODUCTION)

First, we will learn Introducing Myself. In this 10th grade English material, we
will learn how to introduce ourselves, starting from name, age, address, and
others. But before we stating our personal identity, usually we can have an
opening. The following is the order of how to introduce myself.
1. Opening /Greeting
The sentences can be used:
- Hi
- Hello
- Good morning/afternoon/night
- Let me introduce my self
- May I introduce my self?
- Fisrt of all, I would like to introduce myself.
- etc
2. Name
To stating a name, there are many sentences that can be used. Here are
some examples of self-introduction to state a name:
 Hi, my name is Najwa Shihab.
 Hi, I am Najwa Shihab.
 My first name is Najwa.
 My surname is Shihab.
 My family name is Shihab.
 Hi, my last name is Shihab.
 Hi, my nickname is Najwa.
 You can call me Najwa Shihab.
 I’m usually called Najwa Shihab.
 etc
3. Age and Birth Day
 I am 15 years old. (age)
Then, to tell the date of birth and birthday, you can use three ways,
namely:
 I was born on November 26th, 2001.
 I was born in November 2001.
 I was born in 2001.
 My birthday is on November 26th.
 etc
4. Adress
 I am from Indonesia.
 I am from Bandung.
 I live in Margahayu.
 I live on Margahayu Street.
 I live at Margahayu Street No.23.
Note :
In : used to explain the name of a region.
On : used to explain the name of a street.
At : used to explain the complete address including the house number.
5. Hobby
Questions about hobbies are frequently asked. Well, here is an example of
introducing myself to state a hobby:
- My hobby is reading.
Or, if you have more than one hobby, you can use “hobbies”
- My hobbies are reading and listening
6. School
Then, to tell the school of origin, you can use the following sentences:
- I go to SMAN 1 Jakarta.
- I am a student at SMAN 1 Jakarta.
- I study at SMAN 1 Jakarta.
7. Dreams
 I want to be a doctor when I grow up.

 I want to build a school when I grow up.


 My dream is to become a doctor.
So, what if you don’t have a dream? Well, you can use sentences like
the ones below:
 I don’t know yet, but I’m interested in the entertainment industry. (Saya
belum tahu, tapi saya tertarik dengan industri hiburan)

8. Others
- You can state your family (father, mother, brother, sister, grandfather,
grandmother, etc)
- You can staate your like/dislike/favourite (food, drink, music, film,etc)
9. Closing and response
- Good bye
- See you
- How do you do
- Nice to meet you
- Good to see you
- Pleased to meet you
- etc

Example:

Kartika : Excuse me. I don’t think we have met, I’m Kartika.


Okki : Hello. I’m Okki. I am your new neighbor.
Kartika : Oh really?. You move to the house next to me, aren't you?
Okki : Yes it is. Please come to my house this afternoon. I baked some
cookies.
Kartika : Sure! Thanks. Nice to know you Okki.
Okki : Nice to know you too Kartika.

INTRODUCING OTHERS
 Do you know Kartika?
 Have you met Kartika?
 This is a friend of mine,Okki.
 Ika, this is Okki, my friend.
 May I introduce my friend, Mrs. Suryani?
 Please allow me to introduce our new Administration Manager.
 Let me introduce you to Mrs. Lina our new Marketing Manager. Mrs.
Lina. this is Mr. Lutfi from Java Plantation Company.

Responses
 No, I don't think so.
 No, I haven't.
 Hi, glad to meet you. I am Okki.
 Hello, Okki. Pleased to meet you.
 I am glad to know you.
 It is nice to see you.
 How do you do?
 How do you do? It is very nice to meet you.

Example:
Reni : That’s Didit. Do you know him?
Rita : No, I don’t.
Reni : Hello, Dodit. How are you?
Dodit : Hello, Reni. I'm fine thanks.
Reni : Dodit, this is a friend of mine, Rita Aprianti.
Dodit : Hello Rita. Pleased to meet you.
Rita : Hi Dodit, pleased to meet you too.

Read the dialogue below! Practice the dialogue in front of the class
Today is the first day at school for Nico. He meets Emma. Then, they introduce
each other.
Nico : Good morning, haven’t we met before?
Emma : Good morning. I don’t think so.
Nico : Let me introduce myself. My name is Nico. How do you do?
Emma : How do you do, Nico? I am Emma. What grade are you in?
Nico : I am in the tenth grade. What about you?
Emma : Same. Then, in what class are you in?
Nico : I am in accounting class. Is that the same class as you?
Emma : Yes, sure.
Nico : Where do you live, Emma?
Emma : I live near here. Do you also come from Jombang?
Nico : No, I am from Mojokerto. And I live in a lodging house here.

Emma : Anyway, this is my friend. Her name is Peggy. Ok then, let’s go
to the class together.

EXPRESSIONS OF ASKING AND GIVING OPINION

Learning Objectives:
 Understanding the social function: of the expression asking and giving
opinion, namely to start, maintain, and end a conversation related to opinions.
 Identifying the text structure: used in asking and giving opinion, such as the
opening sentence, content, and closing.
 Recognizing linguistic elements: used in asking and giving opinion, such as
relevant vocabulary and grammar.
 Able to use the right expressions: to ask and give opinions in various
situations.
 Able to respond: to other people's opinions, both agreeing and disagreeing.
 Improving speaking and writing skills: in English.
 Improving critical thinking skills: in expressing opinions and responding to
other people's opinions.
 Increasing students' self-confidence in communicating in English.
 Applying the expression: asking and giving opinion in everyday life.

Inna: "Sasa, what do you think of English?"

Sasa: "I think English is very important."

Inna: "What do you think of watching TV every day?"

Sasa: "In my opinion, watching TV every day is boring."

Inna: "Yeah, I think so."

Dialog above contains the example of expressions of asking and giving opinion.
In class 10 English, you learn to express opinions and ask for others' opinions,
using various phrases and sentence structures.

What is Asking and Giving Opinion?


Asking and giving opinion is a way that someone does to ask and give opinion to
other people. When carrying out daily activities, we usually cannot be separated
from this common expression. The purpose of asking and giving opinion is “to get
information of something or ti give information to someone who need that
information.

When we use Asking and Giviong Opinion?


Based on previous explanation, asking and giving opinion is certainly used ehen
there is an interactive chat or dialogue to discuss something. Well, this can happen
in various situations, such as discussing work with co-workers; chatting with
friends, family, and partners; and then when deliberating a solution for a problem;
and many more. This involves both formal and informal situations.

Asking for Opinions:


What is meant by asking? Asking comes from the word “ask” with yhe suffix –ing
which means to ask. In verb, asking is part of saying verb which is oncluded in the
action verb category.
Meanwhile, opinion means opinion, or can be replaced with the term sugestion
which means suggestion.

 Formal:
o "What is your opinion on...?
o "What are your views on...?
o "Could you give me your thoughts on...?
o "What do you think of...?
o "I'd like to know your views on...?
o Would you give me your opinion on …?
o What are your views on …?
o Do you have any idea …?
o What is your feeling about …?
o Have you got any comments on …?
o Could you tell me your opinion about ..?
o I’d like to know your view on....?
o Do you have opinion about ........?
o Please give me your thought on .....!

 Informal:

Giving Opinions:
Giving opinion is an expression used to give an opinion about something. In
giving opinion, we convey an idea or concept as a response from someone who
asks us.
 Formal:
o "In my opinion, ...
o "From my point of view, ...
o "I believe that...
o "I think it's fair to say that...
o "I personally believe...
o May I make a comment on that?
o In my point of view …
o My opinion about … Feel that we should …
o I personally consider …
o My own view of the matter is…
o If I had my view, I would…
o In my personal opinion …
o In my mind …
o My reaction is we should ......

 Informal:
o "I think...
o "I believe that...

Priti : "Brian, what do you think of our English teacher, Ms. Laura?"

Brian : "I think our English teacher is very beautiful, slim, and tall."

Priti : "That's physically speaking. What do you think of her personality?"

Brian : "In my opinion, she is kind, friendly, smart, responsible, and generous.
What about your opinion? What do you think of her?"

Priti : "I think she is perfect."

Brian : “Oh yeah...You are right.”
