REFLECTION

Communication plays a vital role in a society. It is the process of

exchanging ideas, thoughts, and opinions among two or more people.
Without communication we can not gain better understanding of the world. It
is more simply, the creation and exchange of meanings.

Intrapersonal communication is the communication within one’s self. It

is also called as a self-talk, self-reflection, or inner speech. Effective
communication starts with ourselves. No good communication is achieved
when one’s self has no self-awareness and self-understanding.
Understanding our own thoughts, and behavior affect how we will
communicate with others. Conversing with ourselves help us to reflect and
build our own perception of the world. With that, we can also understand
others and see the differences of people. Also, it helps us to motivate
ourselves to improve our communication skills and achieve good
communication with others.

However, how ironic it is how we can easily know and understand

others well while sometimes it is hard for us to know and understand
ourselves well. That is why we need communication not only with ourselves
but also with others. The most used phrase, “No man is an island” expresses
the idea of that no human beings can depend on his own. We all need
someone to depend on whatever aspect in our life it may be. Exchanging
ideas with others also contribute to human development. Socializing with
other people is one way of learning and to have better understanding of our
community. It allows every individual to view different opinions and
perspective of something. What we know might not know by others. What we
think is right might wrong to others. With social interaction we can
communicate with people with various real-life context.

To build a unified country we need communication. One person is not a

country itself, therefore, a President especially to a democratic country will
not act and decide on his own without hearing the opinions and the needs of
his fellow countrymen. It is one way to create bond and help us bring as one.
It is expected that in a country we have different beliefs and perspective of
something. Respecting others is one way to practice strong communication
and help build relationship with others.
An example of societal issues that resulted in bad communication is
the gender inequality or the discrimination to LGBTQ+ members. In
Philippines, same sex marriage is not accepted by the law. Having romantic
relationship is not the norm in the Philippines and because of their strong
belief that men is for women and women is for men only. Because of that up
until now same sex marriage is not allowed to our country. However,
discrimination is another topic. The members in this community received a
lot of discriminations and judgments of others. And because of that they
cannot act for their own and they hide. Miscommunication occurs because of
the differences between straight people and the people of LGBTQ+. We
should know that people built different, however, we are all human. We feel
the same as what others do feel. Not because some people are different that
does not mean that they can’t live with freedom and they can’t live normally.
That is what LGBTQ+ members said. Within their community, they
understand each other well. They may come to different families and have
different self-context; they know that they feel the same. In their community
there is unity in diversity. And that’s an example of a good communication.
In preparing speech you must know your purpose first. For example,
when you are teaching, your purpose is to inform. You may add humorous
lines but you should always focus to what your dominant purpose is. Another
example is when you are invited to speak a motivational speech, your
purpose is to persuade them. In order to convince somebody to think alike or
do the same as you have been saying, you must leave evidences to support
your speech. Persuasive speech also happens in court hearings. Lawyers
should leave strong evidences to support their statement and convince the
judge and people to what he/she is saying. As a lawyer you must practice the
purpose of persuading others. And lastly, when you are an entertainer, your
purpose is to make people laugh.
You may think how we can deliver our speech. There are four different
options that we can choose on. Speaking or Reading to the manuscript is
one. You just read what your prepared written speech to your audience. It
may be an easy one but there are a lot of disadvantages. One can be the
lack of interaction with your audience, second your speech becomes boring,
and lastly your paper might blow away by wind. Another option is the
memorized speech which is done in oratorical performance. The challenges
you might face will be forgetting your speech. The disadvantages are lack of
audience connection and your speaking might be stiff or monotonous. The
third option is impromptu, also known as on-the-spot speech. In this kind of
speech, you have given no time to prepare and your speech is only based to
your ideas and experiences. Lastly, extemporaneous speech. It has a little
time of preparation including outlining the speech with the introduction,
body, and the conclusion and a time for practicing the speech. There are a
lot of options to choose on but for me extemporaneous speech is the most
effective speech because it has audience interaction and the way they
deliver speech is more on conversational speech.
