Gpa Calculation

The document outlines the calculation methods for Semester GPA (GPAs), Academic Year Cumulative GPA (cGPAACYR), and overall Cumulative GPA (cGPA) for students. It provides formulas and examples for computing these averages based on course grades and credit hours. Student X's performance is analyzed, showing an improvement in semester GPAs but a decline in cumulative GPA due to poor performance in the first semester.

1.1.1.

Semester GPA (GPAs)

a) A Grade Point Average for a given semester (GPAs) shall be computed from
semester results at the end of each semester to assess the student’s overall
performance, using the following formula:
n

 GPCH i i
GPAs = i =1
n

 CH
i =1
i

Where:
i. GPAs = Grade Point Average for a given semester S
ii. GPi = Grade Point for the ith course offered in a given semester S
iii. CHi = Number of credit hours for the ith course in a given semester S
iv. n = Number of courses taken in semester S
b) The example for computing the GPAs for student X in semesters 1 and 2 is
presented below:

Computation of Cumulative Grade Point Average (Sem. 1 + 2) for Student

Final Credit Grade CH 
Semester Course Description
Mark Hours (CH) Points (GP) GP
I Biology I 53 3.50 2.00 7.00
I Chemistry I 51 3.50 2.00 7.00
I Comm. Skills I 64 3.50 2.60 9.10
I Maths I 59 3.50 2.30 8.05
I Social Physics 53 2.00 2.00 4.00
I Comp. Application. 76 2.00 3.40 6.80
I Physics 53 3.00 2.00 6.00
I Sub-Total 21.00 47.95
II Biology II 59 3.50 2.30 8.05
II Chemistry II 57 3.50 2.30 8.05
II Comm. Skills II 83 3.50 3.60 12.60
II Maths II 69 3.50 2.90 10.15
Computation of Cumulative Grade Point Average (Sem. 1 + 2) for Student
Final Credit Grade CH 
Semester Course Description
Mark Hours (CH) Points (GP) GP
II Physics 54 3.00 2.00 6.00
II Sub-Total 17.00 44.85
I and II Grand Total 38 92.80

Thus:

Semester 1 GPA for student X above will be:

n

 GP CH i i
2.0  3.5 + 2.0  3.5 + ... + 2.0  3.0 47.95
GPA1 = i =1 = = =2.28
n
3.5 + 3.5 + ... + 3.0
 CH
21
i
i =1

Semester 2 GPA for student X above will be:

n

 GP CH i i
2.3  3.5 + 2.3  3.5 + ... + 2.0  3.0 44.85
GPA2 = i =2
= = =2.64
n
3.5 + 3.5 + ... + 3.0
 CH
17
i
i =2

1.1.2. Academic Year Cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPAACYR)

a) A cumulative Grade Point Average for a given year (cGPAACYR) shall be computed
from results at the end of the two semesters of an academic year to assess the
student’s academic year performance, using the following formula:
n n
GPA1  CH 1 + GPA 2  CH 2
C GPAACYR = i =1
n n
i =2

 CH +  CH
i =1
1
i =2
2

Where:
i. GPA1 = Grade Point Average for a given semester 1
ii. GPA2 = Grade Point Average for a given semester 2
iii. CH1 = Number of credit hours for the ith course in Semester 1
iv. CH2 = Number of credit hours for the ith course in Semester 2
v. n = Number of courses taken in semester S
Thus Academic Year Cumulative GPA for student X above will be:
n n
GPA1  CH 1 + GPA 2  CH 2
2.28  21 + 2.64 17 92.76
GPAACYR = i =1 i =2
= = =2.44
21 + 17
C n n

 CH +  CH
38
1 2
i =1 i =2

1.1.3. Cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA)

a) A cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) shall be computed from results of over
two or more semesters up to the current level to assess the student’s overall
performance up to that level, using the following formula:
k

 GP
j =1
j

c GPA = k

 CH
j =1
j

Where:
i. cGPA = Cumulative Grade Point Average over two or more semesters
ii. GPj = Sum of grade points for the jth semester
iii. CHj = Total number of credit hours for the jth semester
iv. k = Number of semesters

Thus Cumulative GPA for student X above will be:

k

 GP
j =1
j
47.95 + 44.85 92.80
c GPA= = = =2.44
k
21 + 17
 CH
38
j
j =1

b) Student X improved his GPAs from 2.28 in Semester 1 to 2.64 in Semester 2.

However, his cGPAACYR / cGPA at the end of the year/level has been pulled down
by poor performance in Semester 1.
