PROGRESS REPORT JULY 2025

NAME: HAZWANI BINTI HASSIM STUDENT ID:

PBL21003
MAIN SUPERVISOR: ASSOC. PROF. DR. HAFIZOAH BINTI KASSIM

1. Please state whether you have achieved your targeted progress.

If not, please explain (if any)
I have achieved most of my targeted progress for July 2025. Key milestones
completed include:
 Finalizing the literature review focused on the integration of AI chatbots in
ESL speaking classrooms
 Designing and submitting the AI-Chatbot Speaking Module tailored for
Form 4 students based on the KSSM and CEFR framework
 Conducting mid-cycle assessments and collecting student reflection data
on speaking performance and language anxiety
However, the pre-test data collection was slightly delayed due to overlapping
school-level activities and internal exam schedules. This task has been
rescheduled for early August, and appropriate adjustments have been made to
the research timeline to ensure smooth continuity without compromising the
study's quality and objectives.
2. Obstacles faced by you in your research progress (if any)
One of the main obstacles encountered during this phase of the research was
scheduling conflicts with school activities and examinations, which led to a slight
delay in conducting the pre-test and initial data collection. Due to students’
involvement in various academic and co-curricular programs, it was challenging
to allocate consistent time for chatbot-based speaking sessions. Additionally,
there were minor technical issues in integrating the AI chatbot platform with the
school’s available devices and internet connection, which required additional
troubleshooting and support. Despite these challenges, contingency plans were
implemented, including rescheduling activities and coordinating with the school’s
ICT support team. These proactive measures have helped ensure that the
research remains on track and that all components will be completed within the
revised timeline.
3. Summary of Research Progress
The research aims to enhance Form 4 students’ speaking skills by utilizing AI
chatbots aligned with the KSSM and CEFR frameworks at SM Sains Kota Tinggi. In
July 2025, key progress includes the completion of the literature review and the
development of an AI chatbot speaking module tailored to CEFR A2–B1 levels.
Students began weekly practice using the chatbot, focusing on textbook-based
speaking themes. Mid-cycle feedback and anxiety surveys were collected to
assess student engagement and comfort levels. A slight delay occurred in
conducting the pre-test due to school activities and examinations, but it has
been rescheduled for early August. Minor technical issues were resolved with the
assistance of ICT support. Despite these challenges, the project remains on
track. Early observations show improved student confidence, reduced speaking
anxiety, and increased participation in English oral activities. The next phase will
focus on data collection, analysis, and evaluation of learning outcomes.
