3.11 Define Load Patterns:

Assign the load patterns which are acting on the structure
As in our structure we have live loads, dead loads, wall and partition wall loads
and seismic loadings (UBC 97) as well.
Define > Load Patterns >Add new loads >Ok
• Dead Load: Type - Dead, Self-Weight Multiplier = 1
• Live Load: Type - Live, Self-Weight Multiplier = 0
• Wall Load: Type - Super Dead, Self-Weight Multiplier = 0
• Partition Wall Load: Type - Super Dead, Self-Weight Multiplier = 0
• Seismic Load (EQX - Modify): Type - Seismic, Self-Weight Multiplier =
0, Code - UBC97
• Seismic Load (EQY - Modify):Type - Seismic, Self-Weight Multiplier
=0, Code - UBC97
21-CE-198 24
3.12 UBC97 CODE:
UBC 97 (Uniform Building Code 1997) was a seismic design code used in
the U.S. to ensure buildings could withstand earthquake forces. It provided
guidelines for lateral seismic load calculations, based on seismic zones,
building type, and structural systems. The code divided regions into
seismic hazard zones and set rules for different types of buildings (low-
rise, high-rise, steel, concrete, etc.). UBC 97 was eventually replaced by
the International Building Code (IBC) starting in 2000.
UBC 97 is used as an auto lateral load option in ETABS because it was
widely adopted for seismic design in the past, providing standardized
methods for calculating lateral seismic forces. It's included for
compatibility with older projects or regions that still follow its provisions,
offering a familiar and proven approach for engineers.

Define Load Pattern

1. Go to define menu
2. Select load pattern

Figure 29: select load patterns From Toolbar.

21-CE-198 25

Assign Joint Restraints (Apply Fix Supports)

Joint restraints define how the structure interacts with the ground by fixing
or partially restraining movement at the base.
Steps to Assign Fix Supports:
Go to Assign > Joint > Restraints.
Select all base joints (foundation level).
Choose Fix Support (restraining translation and rotation in all directions).
Click Apply, then OK.
Verify that restraints appear correctly in the model.

Figure 32:Select Joints of Bottom story

21-CE-198 29
Figure 33: Assign Joint Restraints from all axis

3.13 Assign Diaphragms

Diaphragms distribute lateral forces (wind and seismic) evenly across the
structure.
Steps to Assign Diaphragms:
Go to Assign > Joint > Diaphragm.
Select all slab joints.
Define a new diaphragm (Rigid/Flexible) if needed.
Click Apply, then OK.
Verify that diaphragms appear in the model.

21-CE-198 30
3.14 Assign Various Types of Loads
Different load types need to be assigned to structural members (frames, slabs,
walls).
3.14.1 Frame Loads (Assign Distributed Loads to Beams)
Frame elements (beams and columns) carry point and distributed loads.
Steps to Apply Distributed Loads:
Go to Assign > Frame Loads > Distributed Loads.

Select beams or columns.

Input the distributed load values (e.g., self-weight, super dead, live loads).
Click Apply, then OK.
Assign the Frame loads (wall loads, partition wall loads etc.)
We take all the corner walls as 9” wall so the load calculated will be
(1*12 *0.75 *125 /1000) = 1.125 kip/ft
First select all the edge walls >Go to assign > Frame loads > Distributed >
Select load pattern > write the load in kip/ft >OK

Figure 34: Assign Diaphragms to all stories

Figure 35: Select Distributed frame load option

Figure 36:Define load pattern & uniform load value

21-CE-198 32
Figure 37: Wall loads applied as shown

Similarly assign the loads to the inner walls as Partition wall load
We assume all the inner walls as 4.5” so the load calculations will be
(1*12*0.375*125/1000) =0.5625kip/ft
Remaining all steps are same.

21-CE-198 33
Figure 38:Define load pattern & uniform load value for top story

3.14.2 Shell Loads (Assign Loads to Slabs and Walls)

Shell elements include slabs and shear walls, requiring surface loads.
Steps to Assign Shell Loads:
Go to Assign > Shell Loads > Surface Loads.
Select slabs or walls.
Define the load (Live Load = 0.05 kip/ft², Roof Load = 0.03 kip/ft²).
Click Apply, then OK.

21-CE-198 37
3.16 Define Load Combinations
Load combinations account for multiple loads acting together (e.g., Dead Load +
Live Load + Seismic).
Steps to Define Load Combinations:
Go to Define > Load Combinations.
Click Add Default Design Combos (for automatic load combinations).
If necessary, modify and add user-defined combinations.
Click OK to save.

4.2 Story response:

The Story Response Plots option in the Display tab in ETABS
provides graphical representations of the structural response at each
floor (story) of the building under the applied loads. These plots
display parameters such as displacement, acceleration, or force at
each story level, allowing you to analyze how the structure behaves
during an event like an earthquake or wind load. It helps identify the
distribution of forces or displacements across the building’s height
and is essential for evaluating the performance of each floor and
ensuring the building meets safety and design standards.
