Introduction
● Roulette is a casino game where the player places a
bet on a number.
● The concept of the game revolves around simulating a
roulette wheel, where a sequence of LED lights
represents the numbered slots of a traditional
roulette wheel.

555 timer IC and 4017 IC, to simulate random number
generation and LED illumination.
22/08/2024 4
Applications
● Can be used as a source of entertainment.
● In electronic gaming circuits.
● As a random number generator

1. 555 Timer IC
● The 555 timer IC acts as an astable multivibrator used
to generate the clock pulses for the circuit that drive
the 4017 decade counter IC.
● These pulses determine the speed at which the LEDs
rotate in the roulette game, simulating the spinning of
the roulette wheel.
22/08/2024 7
2. 4017 Decade Counter IC
● The 4017 is a decade counter, connected to the output
of the 555 timer IC.
● It has 10 outputs that go high one at a time in
sequence with each clock pulse.
● used to sequentially light up the LEDs in a circular
pattern what makes the LEDs light up one after the
other, creating the visual effect of a spinning roulette
wheel.
22/08/2024 8
3. PNP Transistor (BC557)
● The BC557 PNP transistor acts as a switch that
controls the power supplied to the LEDs.
● It ensures that the LEDs only light up when the correct
output from the 4017 IC is active.
22/08/2024 9
4. 10 LEDs
● The LEDs are connected to the outputs of the 4017 IC.
● They are arranged in a circular pattern.
● LEDs provide a clear visual representation of the
roulette wheel’s spin.
22/08/2024 10
5. Resistors
● 330R: Used in series with each LED to limit the current,
preventing the LEDs from burning out.
● 10K: Used in conjunction with the 555 timer IC to help
set the frequency of the oscillation.
● 3.3M (2x):used with the 555 timer IC to control the
charging and discharging of the capacitor, thus
influencing the timing intervals.
● 10M: used in the transistor's base circuit to limit the
base current, ensuring the transistor operates correctly.

6. Capacitors
● 1uF: works with the resistors to control how fast the
timer oscillates, directly affecting the speed of the LED
rotation.
● 100n: The 100n capacitor helps stabilize the circuit by
filtering out noise, ensuring reliable operation.
22/08/2024 12
7. Breadboard:
● The breadboard is used as the platform to assemble
and test the circuit without the need for soldering.
22/08/2024 13
8. Breadboard Connectors
● These connectors are used to establish connections between
components on the breadboard.
9. Power Supply
● The power supply is connected to the circuit to provide the
necessary voltage for the components to operate.

Working Mechanism
When you touch both the touch-contacts:
● Finger creates a small electrical connection. This
allows current to flow through the circuit.
● The current from finger charges a capacitor (1uF) in
the circuit. As the capacitor charges, its voltage
increases.
● The capacitor's negative terminal is connected to the
base of a PNP transistor.
22/08/2024 18
● When the capacitor charges, it turns the transistor on.
● When the transistor turns on, it allows more current to
flow between its emitter and collector. This makes the
transistor conduct more.
● The 100nF capacitor near the 555 timer is connected to
the transistor.
22/08/2024 19
● With the transistor conducting, this capacitor charges
quickly because it has less resistance in the circuit.
● The speed at which the 100nF capacitor charges and
discharges affects the frequency of the square wave
generated by the 555 timer IC.
● Faster charging means a higher frequency of the
output signal.
22/08/2024 20
● The output from the 555 timer controls the 4017 IC,
which makes the LEDs rotate. A higher frequency means
the LEDs rotate faster.
Removing Your Finger:
● When you remove your finger, the 1uF capacitor
discharges slowly.
● As it discharges, the base voltage of the transistor
becomes less negative, and the transistor conducts less.
22/08/2024 21
● With less current flowing through the transistor, the
100nF capacitor takes longer to charge.
● This results in a lower frequency output from the 555
timer IC.
● A lower frequency means the LEDs rotate more slowly
and eventually stop.
22/08/2024 22
Expected Output
● When both touch contacts are touched, the LEDs light
up in a quicker sequence, giving the appearance of
rapid spinning.
● When the finger is removed, LEDs gradually slow
down and eventually stop, showing the final result.

Sources of error
Here's an analysis of potential errors:
● LED’s not lighting up: Incorrect wiring.
● LEDs do not rotate: 555 Timer IC not generating
pulses.
● LED rotation too fast/slow: Incorrect capacitor values.

Problems we faced
● There were a few problems with the IC.
● The LED’s weren’t rotating.

Future modifications
● This LED roulette circuit can also be used as an LED
dice. (use only 6 LED’s instead of 10).
● Use of 7-segment display for clear result presentation.
● Addition of touch contacts or buttons for more
interactive gameplay.
● Integration of sound module or buzzer for added
game excitement.
