What’s New
Life is full of ups and downs.
Without downs, the ups would y = -2𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 4
mean nothing.
Did you know that even the
graph of quadratic function has
ups and downs?
Human, society and the
world transform. Similarly, the 𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟒
graph of the quadratic function
transforms from being narrow to
being wider or vice versa.
Based on the graph of y = x2,
consider the graph of function
𝑦 = 3𝑥 2 + 10𝑥 + 12. Can you describe how its graph moves horizontally?
vertically? What are the factors that affect its movement?

What is It
We utilize graphs in our everyday life from simple to complicated
calculation when doing analysis of any kind. From students to professionals,
a graph can help you keep track of things and to be on top of your game.
A graph makes our life simpler. It gives us visual representations of
data which removes the monotony of figures, spicing things up and adding
flavors to facts.
The Effects of the Value a on the Graph of Quadratic Function
Let us see the effect of the constant a, by observing the graphs of the
1
functions 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 , 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 2 and ℎ(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 in which 𝑎 > 0.
2
Note that the graphs open upward. The graph of 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 2 is
1
narrower than the graph of f(x) = x2. The graph of ℎ(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 is wider
2
than the graph of 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 2 . Then, if the value of a > 0, the graph of
the quadratic function opens upward and as the value of a increases,
the graph of the function gets narrower.
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
This time, let us consider the effects of the constant a on the graphs of the
−1
functions f(𝑥 ) = −𝑥 2 , 𝑘 (𝑥 ) = −4𝑥 2 and 𝑗(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 where 𝑎 < 0.
4
Note that the graphs open downward.
The graph of 𝑘 (𝑥 ) = −4𝑥 2 is narrower than the
−1
graph of f(x) = - x2. The graph of 𝑗(𝑥 ) = 𝑥2
2 4
k(x)= -4x
is wider than the graph of 𝑘 (𝑥 ) = −4𝑥 2 .
f(x) =-x2 Then, if the value of a < 0, the graph of
the quadratic function opens downward and
j(x)=-¼x2 as the value of a decreases, the graph of the
function gets narrower.
The Effects of the Value of h on the Graph of Quadratic Function
Consider the graphs of the functions 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 , 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 4)2 , 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 8)2
and 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 + 4)2 , 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 + 8)2 . Let us see the effects of the values
of h on the graphs of the functions, where 𝑎 > 0.
y =2(x-8)2 y =2(x+4)2 y =2x2 y=2(x-4)2 y =2(x-8)2
DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
Note that the graph of 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 4)2 is the same as the graph of 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2
but slided 4 units to the right while the graph of 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 8)2 slides 8
units to the right. Thus, if h > 0, the graph of the function slides h units to
the right.
Similarly, note that the graph of 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 + 4)2 is the same as the
graph of 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 but slides 4 units to the left while the graph of 𝑦 =
2(𝑥 + 8)2 slides 8 units to the left.
Thus, if h < 0, the graph of the function slides h units to the left.

What’s More
From graph of 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 2 , sketch the graph of each quadratic function in
the same coordinate system and describe its movement.
1. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 2 + 3 6. 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 2(𝑥 + 4)2
2. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2(𝑥 − 3)2 − 1 7. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = −2𝑥 2 − 1
3. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2(𝑥 + 2)2 8. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2(𝑥 + 3)2 + 5
4. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = −2𝑥 2 + 3 9. 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 2(𝑥 − 3)2 − 2
5. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2(𝑥 + 1)2 − 2 10. 𝑓(𝑥 ) = −2(𝑥 − 1)2
