Activity in Statistics

The document contains a series of statistical exercises focusing on descriptive and inferential statistics, sample and population identification, variable classification, and scales of measurement. It includes examples and explanations for each exercise, such as identifying whether statistics are descriptive or inferential, defining samples and populations in various scenarios, and classifying variables as qualitative or quantitative. Additionally, it discusses coding schemes for qualitative data and the appropriate scales of measurement for different types of data.

1.1 Classify each of the following as descriptive or inferential statistics and explain briefly.

a) The average points per game, percent of free throws made, average number of rebounds made
per game, and average number of fouls per game as well as several other measures for players
in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) are computed.
- I believe this is Descriptive Statistics since it has something to do with calculations of various
statistical measures to summarize information.
b) Ten percent of the boxes of cereal sampled by a quality technician are found to be under the
labeled weight. Based on this finding, the filling machine is adjusted to increase the amount to
fill.
- I think that this is inferential statistics since it made use of hypothesis to reach a conclusion
about a population.
c) The Philippine Daily Inquirer gives several pages of numerical quantities concerning stocks of top
ten companies listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange Commission (PSEC) as well as funds listed
in Mutual Funds.
- I think that this is descriptive statistics because it made use of numerical quantities to come
up with summarize information.
d) Based on a study of 500 single parent households by a social researcher, a magazine reports that
25% of all single parent households are headed by a college dropout.
- Inferential Statistics- The social researchers made use of a sample of 500 single parent
households to reach a conclusion regarding the population.

1.2 Identify the sample and the population in the following scenarios.

a) In order to study the response times for emergency 117 calls in NCR, fifty “robbery in progress”
calls are selected randomly over a six-month period and the response times are recorded.
- Population- Emergency 117 calls in NCR
- Sample- Fifty “robbery in progress” calls
b) In order to study a new medical charting system of the Kalinga Provincial Hospital, a
representative group of nurses is asked to use the charting system. Recording times and error
rates are recorded for the group.
- Population- New medical Charting system of the Kalinga Provincial Hospital
- Sample- Representative Group of nurses is asked to use the charting system.
c) Five hundred individuals who listen to a local radio program of DZRK Radyo Pilipinas in Tabuk
City are selected and information concerning their education level, income level, and so forth is
recorded.
- Population- Listeners of local radio program of DZRK Radyo PIlipinas in Tabuk City
- Sample- Five hundred listener individuals of DZRK Radyo PIlipinas in Tabuk City

1.3 In each of the following, identify the variable and the number of observations in the data set.
Also, classify whether the variable is discrete or continuous.

a) In a sociological study involving 35 low-income households, the number of children per

household was recorded for each household.
- The variable is the low-income households and the number of children per household. The
number of observations in the data set is 35 low-income household. The variable is classified
as discrete.
b) A national survey was emailed to 5000 households and one question asked for the number of
handguns per household. Three thousand of the surveys were completed and returned.

- The variable is the number of households who answered for the number of handguns per
household. The observations in the data set is Three thousand who completed the survey.
The variable is discrete.
c) The number of hours spent per week on paper work was determined for 200 middle level
managers. The minimum was 0 hours and the maximum was 27 hours.
- The variable is the number of hours spent per week on paper work. The observations in the
data set is 200 middle level managers. The variable is discrete.

1.4 Which of the following are qualitative variables?

a) The color of automobiles involved in several accidents.- Qualitative Variables

b) The length of time required for rats to move through a maze.
c) The classification of municipalities as class A, B, C, D, or E.- Qualitative Variables
d) The rating given to a pizza in taste test as poor, good, or excellent.- Qualitative Variable
e) The number of times subjects in a sociological research study have been married.

1.5 The pain level following surgery for an intestinal blockage was classified as none, low, moderate,
or severe for several patients. Give three different numerical coding schemes that might be used for
the purpose of inclusion of the responses in a computer data file. Does this coding change the
variable to a quantitative variable?

1. 1- None; 2- Low; 3- Moderate; 4- severe

2. 0- None; 1- Low; 2- Moderate; 3- Severe

3. 5- None; 10- Low; 15- Moderate; 20- Severe

1.6 Indicate the scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio) for each of the following
variables.

a) racial origin- nominal

b) monthly electric bills- ratio
c) temperature scales- interval
d) military ranks- ordinal
e) time- interval
f) ranking of personality traits- ratio
g) car plate number- nominal

1.7 Which scales of measurement would usually apply to qualitative data?

- The scales of measurement that would usually apply to qualitative data are Nominal and Ordinal. As to
quantitative, Interval Scales and Ratio scales, since both are results from counting or measuring.
Moreover, both can be calculated.
