IV)Question Answers
Do all the highlighted questions in the notebook

1. When a burning charcoal piece is covered with a glass jar then the burning of the piece stops.
Give reason.

2. What are inflammable substances? Give two examples.

3. What should be done when the clothes of a person catch fire?

4. How are the following agents able to control fire?

a) Water b) Carbon dioxide c) Blanket d) Baking soda

Ans: a) Water - the most common fire extinguisher

❖ Cools the combustible substance below its ignition temperature and prevents
the fire from spreading.
❖ Water vapour surround the combustible material(cuts off supply of air) and extinguishes fire.

b) CO2 is a non-combustible gas and extinguishes fire in two ways:

❖ It is heavier than oxygen and it covers the fire like a blanket and cuts off the contact between oxygen
and fuel.
❖ In cylinders, CO2 is kept in the liquid form. When released, it expands enormously. This brings down
the temperature of the fuel, which helps in controlling the fire.

c) Blanket
Blanket surrounds the combustible material (cuts off supply of air) and extinguishes fire.

d) Baking soda:
Baking soda when thrown on fire get heated up and releases CO2which surround the burning combustible
substance and cuts off the supply of oxygen.(the supporter of combustion)

5.What do you mean by explosion?

5. Although wood has a very high calorific value, we still discourage its use as a fuel. Explain.

6. How can water boil in a paper cup without burning it?

7. What are the three zones of a candle flame? Draw a labeled diagram of a candle
flame. Differentiate among them based on color, temperature and the products formed.

Ans: A candle consists of three zones:

1.Dark zone or zone of no combustion
2.Luminous zone of incomplete combustion
3.Non luminous zone of complete combustion

8. Why does the matchstick start burning on rubbing it on the side of the matchbox?
9. What are the essential requirements for producing fire? On which principle the fire
extinguisher works?

10. Distinguish between spontaneous and rapid combustion?

11. People usually keep angethi/burning coal in their closed rooms during winter season. Why
is it advised to keep the door open?

12. Explain giving reason how you can control fire caused due to the following:

a) Electrical short circuit

b) Oil in a frying pan while working in kitchen
c) Person catching fire due to burning cracker
d) Burning wood

Ans: a) Electrical short circuit:

For fires involving electrical equipment and inflammable materials like petrol, carbon dioxide
(CO2 ) is the best extinguisher. CO2 , being heavier than oxygen, covers the fire like a blanket. Since
the contact between the fuel and oxygen is cut off, the fire is controlled.
The added advantage of CO2 is that in most cases it does not harm the electrical equipment.

b) Oil in a frying pan while working in kitchen :

It can be extinguished by covering the pan with the lid. The lid cuts off air supply in the cooking oil and the
fire gets extinguished.

7|Page
c) Person catching fire due to burning cracker:
If a person is caught in fire, use a blanket to cover them- it cuts off air supply and the fire
gets extinguished.

d) Burning wood :
By pouring water on wood as water cools the combustible substance below its ignition temperature
and prevents the fire from spreading.
Water vapour surround the combustible material(cuts off supply of air) and extinguishes fire.

13.Why is the use of diesel and petrol as fuels in automobiles being replaced by Compressed Natural
Gas (CNG) in big cities?

14.Rahul and Raghav went to a party and had water in paper cups. The magician at the party asked
both of them to give their paper cups to him to show a magic. Rahul had finished the waterand his cup
had dried while Raghav’s cup still had water. The two cups were brought over a candle a flame. The
children in the party were amazed to see the result. Explain what did the children observe.

Complete combustion of fuel

Also do NCERT Q: 5, 9 and 11 in the notebook.

NCERT Ques 5.
Give reasons.
(a) Water is not used to control fires involving electrical equipment.
Ans: Water is a good conductor of electricity.
If added to an electrical fire, the person dousing the fire might get an electric
shock.
b) LPG is a better domestic fuel than wood.
Ans: LPG is a better domestic fuel than wood as
• It does not release any smoke and unburnt carbon particles which cause
pollution.
• It has high calorific value
• It can be transported through pipes easily.
It does not involve cutting of trees which can lead to deforestation

c) Paper by itself catches fire easily whereas a piece of paper wrapped

around an aluminium pipe does not.
The paper by itself catches fire easily because of its low ignition temperature.
The piece of paper wrapped around an aluminium pipe doesn’t catch fire
because aluminium is a good conductor of heat.
When wrapped around an aluminium pipe paper's ignition temperature isn't
attained. This is due to aluminium metal absorbing the heat supplied to paper.
So it does not catch fire easily. As, there is a transfer of heat from paper to the
aluminium pipe. Hence it doesn’t catch fire.

NCERT Ques 9.
It is difficult to burn a heap of green leaves but dry leaves catch fire easily.
Explain.
Ans:
A heap of green leaves contains a lot of moisture in it, hence its ignition
temperature is high. Therefore, because of the presence of moisture its ignition
cannot be reached and thus it does not catch fire easily.
But dry leaves have no moisture content in it, hence its ignition temperature is
low. Therefore, it catches fire easily.

NCERT Ques 11.

In an experiment,4.5 kg of a fuel was completely burnt. The heat produced was
measured to be 180,000 KJ. Calculate the calorific value of the fuel.
Ans:
Heat produced by 4.5 kg fuel= 180,000 KJ
So, heat produced by burning 1 kg fuel= 180,000 KJ
4.5 kg
=40,000KJ/Kg
So calorific value of fuel is 40,000KJ/Kg
