Chapter-1

Types and components of computer system

1. Explain what is meant by a computer system. [1]

A computer system is a combination of hardware, software, data, and users that work
together to perform tasks and process data.

2. Identify whether the following statements about ROM and RAM are true or false. [4]

a. ROM stores data and applications that are currently in use.- False

b. When you turn the computer off, everything in RAM is lost.- True

c. ROM is volatile.- False
d. RAM has data pre-installed onto it.- False

3. Discuss whether a touch-screen computer is an input or output device and explain your
conclusion. [2]
A touch-screen computer is both an input and output device. It acts as an input device
when the user touches it to give commands and as an output device by displaying information.
Therefore, it is a hybrid device.

4. State the function of storage devices. [1]

Storage devices are used to save data and programs permanently or temporarily for future
use.

5. There are different types of user interface. Describe the following interfaces and their
advantages and disadvantages.
a. Graphical User Interface (GUI) [4]
GUI allows users to interact with the computer using graphical icons and visual
indicators.
Advantages:
● Easy to use for beginners
● More visually appealing
Disadvantages:
● Requires more memory and processing power
● Can be slower than text-based input for advanced users
b. Command Line Interface (CLI) [4]
CLI allows users to type commands into a terminal to perform tasks.
Advantages:
● Faster for experienced users
● Uses fewer system resources
Disadvantages:
● Difficult to learn for beginners
● Commands must be typed exactly

6. State the functions of a:

a. Linker [1]
A linker joins together different parts of a program, such as object code and libraries, into
a single executable file.
b. Compiler [1]
A compiler converts high-level programming code into machine code so that it can be
executed by the computer.

7. State the main uses of each of the following programs. [6]

a. Word processor – Used to create, edit, and format text documents.
b. Database – Used to store, organize, and manage large amounts of structured
data.
c. Spreadsheet – Used for calculations, data analysis, and creating charts.
d. Desktop publisher – Used to design and produce professional documents like
brochures and posters.
e. Web page editors – Used to create and edit web pages.
f. Presentation software – Used to create visual slideshows for presentations.

8.
a. Describe what is meant by artificial intelligence. [2]
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can
perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, decision-making, and
problem-solving.

b. Describe two uses of artificial intelligence. [4]

1. Voice assistants like Siri or Alexa that understand and respond to human speech.
2. Autonomous vehicles use AI to make decisions based on surroundings and navigate roads
safely.

9. Explain the difference between virtual reality and augmented reality. [2]
Virtual Reality (VR) is a fully immersive experience where users interact in a simulated
digital environment.
Augmented Reality (AR) overlays digital content onto the real world, enhancing the
user's environment without replacing it.
