Exercise 1
Reading Comprehension

Read the text and answer the following questions:

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Secret

The storm had raged for three days. Waves like towering black walls smashed against
the cliffs, their thunderous roar drowning out even the lighthouse’s foghorn. Inside
the lantern room, Elias adjusted the rusted gears of the ancient light, his gnarled
hands trembling—not from fear, but from the cold that seeped through the stone
walls. The lighthouse, a solitary sentinel on the jagged coast, had been his home for
forty years. Yet tonight, something felt different.

A knock at the door below startled Elias. No one visited Stormwatch Point in this
weather. He descended the spiral staircase, his oil lamp casting flickering shadows on
the damp walls. At the door stood a girl of about twelve, her sodden coat dripping
onto the floorboards. Her eyes, wide and desperate, locked onto his.

‘Please,’ she whispered, holding out a sealed brass box. ‘My grandfather said you’d
know what to do with this.’

Elias’s breath caught. The box was engraved with a symbol he hadn’t seen in decades:
a coiled serpent swallowing its tail. His mind flashed to the old legend—the serpent
guarded the lost treasure of the Moonlight Mariner, a shipwreck said to haunt these
very waters.

‘Who was your grandfather?’ Elias demanded, his voice rough as the cliffs outside.

The girl hesitated. ‘Captain Jeremiah Vale. He… he disappeared last night.’

Outside, the wind howled like a vengeful spirit.
