Assignment – 1 (a) : Solid Mechanics
(3rd Semester - Civil Engineering) : 2024
1 A conical rod is hung vertically and its wider end is firmly fixed at the top position. If its length
is L and tapers from diameter d1 to d2 uniformly, determine its extension due to its own weight.
Take density of the rod material as ρ
2 Derive the relationship among E , G, and K as E = [ 9KG / ( 3K+G) ], where E , G, and K are
Young’s Modulus of Elasticity, Shear Modulus , and Bulk modulus respectively.
3 A cast iron flat of 300mm long and of 30mm x 50mm uniform cross section , is acted upon by
the following forces uniformly distributed over the respective cross section; 25kN ( tensile) in
the direction of length : 350 kN( compressive) in the direction of width; and 200 kN ( tensile)in
the direction of thickness. Determine the change in volume of the flat. Take E = 140GN/m 2 and
Poisson’s ratio = µ = 0.25.Refer Figure-3
4 ( a ) Two vertical rods, one of steel and the other of bronze, are rigidly fastened at upper ends
at a horizontal distance of 760mm apart as shown in Figure-4(a). Each rod is 3m long and
25mm in diameter. A horizontal cross-piece connects the lower ends of the bars. Where a load
of 4.5 kN should be placed on the cross-piece so that it remains horizontal after being loaded?

( b) A load supported by two copper rods and one steel rod as shown in Figure-4(b) . if the
stresses in copper and steel are not to exceed 60 MN/m 2 and 120MN/m2, find the safe load
that can be supported.
Take Es = 2Ec
5 A compound bar ( Figure-5) consist of a central strip 40mm wide and 5mm thick, placed
between two strips of brass each 40mm wide and x mm thick. The strips are firmly fixed
together to from a compound bar of rectangular section 40mm wide and (2x+5) mm thick.
Determine:
i) The thickness of the brass strips which will make the apparent modulus of elasticity
of the compound bar equal to 160x 103 MN/m2
ii) The maximum axial pull the bar can then carry, if the stress is not to exceed 160
MN/ m2 in either the brass or the steel. Take Es = 207GN/m2 and Eb = 114 GN/ m2.
6 A compound bar made up of aluminum ( dia 25mm and length of 0.3m) and steel ( dia 50mm
and length of 0.6m), joined together axially, is held between two supports. The bars are stress
–free a t a temperature of 400c. What will be the stresses in two bars when temperature is
200c. If i) the supports are non-yielding and ii) the supports are nearer to each other by 0.1mm
It can be assumed that the temperature is uniform all along the length of the bar. Take E s =
210GN/m2 and Ea = 74 GN/ m2 αs = 11.7 x10-6 per 0c αa= 23.4 x10-6 per 0c
7 ( a ) A brass bar tapers from a diameter of 180mm at one end to one of 90mm at the other
over a length of 900mm. The bar is stress-free at a temperature of 27 0c. If the temperature
drops to 00c, find the maximum normal stress on the bar if the ends are attached to rigid
supports. Take E = 100GPa and α = 18 x 10-6 / 0c

( b) In a railway track, rails are placed and joined together such that they are stress-free at
15 0c.If no allowance is provided for expansion, find the maximum stress in the rails at peak
summer temperature 500c for a rail length of 30m If an expansion allowance of 8mm per rail is
provided, what will be the stress in the rails and at what maximum temperature it is possible to
maintain the rails stress-free . E for rail = 200GPa and α = 12 x 10-6 / 0c
8 ( a ) A conical bar of base radius R and length L is hung .find the strain energy of the bar
deforming under its own weight. Take the specific weight of the cone material is ϒ.

(b)A bar tapers from a diameter of 40mm to 20mm over a length of 2m.If it is subjected to a
tensile load of 50kN, find the strain energy stored in it E= 200GPa.
9 Compare the strain energies of two bars of the same material, when they are subjected to the
same load. If d = 10mm, find the strain energies of the two bars when the maximum stress in
both the bars is equal to 200MPa. Take E = 200GPa. Refer Figure-9
10 In the simple bracket arrangement, shown in the Figure-10, find the strain energy of the
system due to 50kn load acting at B. Also find the vertical deflection of point B. Both the bars
have a diameter of 25mm. E for material of the bar is 200 GPa
11 The composite section shown in Figure-11is subjected to a load of 20kN.Find the strain energy
of the composite bar under this load. E= 200GPa for steel and 70 GPa for aluminum.
12 A bar of 1.2m and diameter 25mm hangs vertically, and has a collar attached rigidly to its lower
end. When a mass of 5kN is gradually applied to the collar, the extension is 0.05mm. Find the
maximum instantaneous deflection and stress , if this load falls from a height of 2.5mm on the
collar.
