OBJECTIVES OF STUDYING BEHAVIORIST THEORY IN SEMANTIC LEXICAL
DIDACTICS
- To understand how vocabulary can be learned through habit formation ;
- To design effective vocabulary teaching strategies ;
- To focus on observable learning outcomes ;
- To simplify the learning prosses for beginners ;
- To apply behaviorist techniques in clasroom tools.
CONTENT
I- Definition
Behaviorist theory is a learning theory that explains how people acquire knowledge,
language on behavior through interaction with the environment.1
II- Strategies for teaching based on the behaviorist theory
These methods are especially useful for beginners, children.
1- Stimulus-response activities : refer to actions taken by an organism in reaction to
a stimulus, which is any detectable change in the environment that elicits a
response.2 (example of stimulus : picture, sound, or word)
Example :
• The teacher says « clap!» (a verbal command) stimulus
• The student claps their hands. (a physical action) response
2- Repetition : is the act of doing or saying something again.3
Example :
• The teacher says « pen »
• The students repeat : pen (3 times)

3- Positive reinforcement : is a method for behavior modification that increases the
likelihood or probability that a behavior will occur. It strengthens a behavior by
adding something pleasurable as a reward after the occurrence of the behavior.4
Example :
• A student answers a question correctly.
• The teacher says : « well done » or « exellent job » or give them a candy.
The reward makes the moment strong in their memory and makes the student
more likely to participate again.
4- Immediate error correction : is a form of feedback given to learners to help them
improve.5 Teacher correct mistakes quickly to prevent bad habits from students.
Example :
• A student says : I watches TV.
• Teacher’s immediate correction : not watches, but watch for ‘I’.
Repeat after me : I watch TV.
• Student repeaps : I watch TV.
ADVANTAGES OF USING BEHAVIORIST THEORY
Working with a behaviorist learning theory can have several benefits for educations
and students alike. Some of these benefits are :
- It provides a clear and objective way of measuring and evaluating student performance
and progress ;
- It motivates students to learn by rewarding them for their achievements and efforts ;
- It helps teachers manage classroom behevior and discipline by using positive
reinforcement and negative reinforcement ;
- It shows the importance of context and environment in understanding meaning ;
- It encourages memorization and pronunciation.6

DISADVANTAGES OF BEHAVIORIST THEORY
- It ignores mental processes : that is to say behaviorism focuses only on observable
behavior, not on thinking, deep understanding, or emotion. It neglects how the mind
works, which is important for deep learning.
- Overuse of repetition : that is to say, students may not understand what they are doing,
just repeat it ;
- Limited creativity and critical thinking : that method doesn’t encourage learners to be
creative and ask questions ;
- Over-reliance on rewards : learners might become dependent on external rewards.
When rewards are removed, motivation can disappear.
- It can’t explain abstract language like « freedom » or « hope ».
CONCLUSION
To sum up, behaviorist theory helps us understand how learning is shaped by
rewards, and other outside factors. Teachers can use this theory to build good learning
environments and keep students engaged. Even though behaviorist theory has some
limits, combining it with other learning methods can better support all students and
improve learning results.
