Untitled Document

The document outlines two writing tasks related to analyzing and summarizing data from graphs. The first task involves analyzing a line graph depicting spending trends in a European country from 1960 to 2000, highlighting significant decreases in food, clothing, and energy expenditures, while transport spending increased. The second task requires writing an original summary of a graph showing library books read by boys and girls at Starmouth School, noting that girls' reading increased more sharply over time compared to boys.

WRITING
*Homework: 2 tasks
1.Analyze this sample by answering these following questions:
-How many parts are there in total? 4 parts
-How did the writer paraphrase the requirement? "Shows" -> "illustrates" ; "From 1960 to
2000" -> "between 1960 and 2000"
-How many paragraphs are there in the body part? 2 paragraphs . Why did the writer do that?
(Ex: They divided these paragraphs based on the data/year,....) the first paragraph : focuses on
categories that decreased ; the second paragraph : focuses on categories that increased
-What is the main point of each body part? Describes the decline in spendingg food clothing
and energy from 1960 to 2000.

-List as many useful words/phrases as possible that the writer used to describe the trend/line
graph.
+ Dropped dramatically
+ Showed an upward trend
Task 1: The line graph shows the percentage of spending in a European country from
1960 to 2000.

Sample:
The line graph illustrates changes in the allocation of spending by residents in a particular
European country between 1960 and 2000.
In 1960, food constituted the highest cost to the household budget/the greatest expenditure was
on food, at around one third of the total spending, followed by leisure with 20%. Transport and
clothing accounted for the same percentage (just below 10%), while much less income was
spent on energy, at a mere 5%.
However, during this 40-year period, the cost of food and leisure dropped dramatically to 14
and 13% respectively. The expenditure on clothing also declined, but much less significantly to
approximately 5%. Meanwhile, energy bills also decreased by the same small percentage in
2000 when the family spent very little on this category.
Transport expenditure, on the other hand, showed an upward trend, overtaking that of leisure
activities in 1990 and that of food before 2000. By the end of the period, it had steadily
increased to 15% of the household income.
Overall, the graph shows how spending rose steadily for transport, which was accompanied by
the corresponding decreases in other expenses. /Overall, the graph shows how the family spent
more on transport over the years while expenditures on (the) other categories were significantly
reduced.

2.Write YOUR OWN Writing Task 1

Task 1. The graph below shows the number of library books read by boys and girls
at Starmouth School from 2006 to the present.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make
comparisons where relevant.
In general, both boys and girls read more books over the years, but girls’ reading increased
more sharply. Boys read more books at the beginning, but girls read more books at the end.

In 2009, boys read about 50 books while girls only read around 25. In 2010, the number
of books read by boys went up to 80, and girls also increased to around 40. In 2011, both
boys and girls read the same number of books. After that, the number of books read by
girls kept going up and reached 140 in 2012. On the other hand, the boys’ reading
dropped back to about 80 in 2012.

Overall, girls became more interested in reading books over time, while boys’ interest
first increased and then fell again.
