CHECK LIST ON: LEOPOLD’S MANEUVER

SUBMITTED TO: SUBMITTED BY:

MS. KANU MAHAJAN PRACHI GUPTA
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR 2440982501
CSHS M.SC NURSING 1ST YEAR
Introduction:
A checklist is a structured tool used to guide and evaluate the acquisition of clinical skills,
theoretical knowledge, and professional behaviors. It plays a critical role in ensuring that nursing
students meet the required standards of practice in both academic and clinical settings. Checklists
support systematic learning, skill validation, and objective assessment.

Purpose of Checklist in Nursing Education:

1. Skill Development: Guides students through step-by-step procedures (e.g., hand
hygiene, wound dressing, IV insertion).

2. Standardization: Ensures all students learn and perform procedures consistently

according to best practices.

3. Assessment Tool: Used by educators to objectively evaluate student competencies during

practical exams (OSCEs) or clinical rotations.

4. Self-Evaluation: Enables students to assess their own learning progress and identify
areas for improvement.

5. Error Reduction: Minimizes the risk of skipping vital steps in clinical procedures.

6. Documentation: Provides written evidence of competency and completion of learning

objectives.

Types of Nursing Checklists:

1. Clinical Skills Checklist: Includes procedures like vital signs monitoring,
catheterization, medication administration, etc.
2. Patient Care Checklist: Focuses on holistic care delivery, including communication,
documentation, hygiene, and safety.

3. Simulation Checklist: Used during simulation lab sessions to monitor student

performance in controlled scenarios.

4. Preceptorship/Internship Checklist: Tracks student achievements and skills during

clinical placements.

5. Health Assessment Checklist: For structured physical and health assessments of

patients.

Components of a Checklist:
• Title and Objective: Clearly states the skill or area being evaluated (e.g., "Wound
Dressing Checklist").

• Student Name and Date: For identification and tracking.

• Task List: Step-by-step actions or criteria to be performed or demonstrated.

• Check Boxes: To mark completion (✔), partial performance (✘), or non-performance.

• Evaluator Comments: For feedback or suggestions.

• Signatures: From student and instructor/preceptor for validation.

Examples in Practice:
• OSCE Exams: Nursing instructors use checklists to assess a student’s ability to perform
specific clinical skills.

• Bedside Clinical Evaluations: Preceptors use checklists during clinical rotations to track
student performance.

• Skills Lab Practice: Students use checklists to practice and perfect skills under
supervision.

Leopold’s Maneuver Checklist:

Leopold’s Maneuvers are a series of four specific abdominal palpation techniques used by nurses
and midwives to assess the position, presentation, and engagement of the fetus in a pregnant
woman, typically during the third trimester. These maneuvers are an essential component of
antenatal care and help guide clinical decisions related to labor and delivery.

Objectives:
The main objectives of this checklist are to:

1. Guide students through each step of Leopold’s Maneuvers in a logical and clinically
correct sequence.

2. Reinforce knowledge of fetal anatomy, positioning, and maternal landmarks relevant to

antenatal assessments.

3. Ensure safe and effective communication with patients while maintaining privacy and
dignity.

PROCEDURE STEPS:

Steps 3 2 1 0

1. Prepare the client

a. Identify the
patient and
introduce self.

b. Does the history

taking and
measures the fundic
height.

c. Explain the
procedure.

d. Instruct the
patient to empty her
bladder.

e. Position the
woman supine with
knees slightly
flexed. Place a
pillow or rolled
towel under the
right side.

f. Wash your hands

using warm water.
g. Observe the
woman’s abdomen
for longest diameter
and where fetal
movement is
apparent.

2. Perform the first

maneuver

a. Stand at the foot

of the patient, facing
her, and place both
hands flat on her
abdomen.

b. Palpate the
superior surface of
the fundus.
Determine
consistency, shape
and mobility.

3. Perform the
second maneuver

a. Face the client

and place the palms
of each hand on
either side of the
abdomen.
b. Palpate the sides
of the uterus while
the right hand
palpates the
opposite side of the
uterus from top to
bottom. Then hold
the right hand
steady, and repeat
palpation using the
left hand on the left
side.

c. Determine where
to assess the fetal
heart rate.

4. Perform the third

maneuver

a. Gently grasp the

lower portion of the
abdomen just above
the symphysis pubis
between the thumb
and index finger and
try to press the
thumb and finger
together. Determine
any movement and
whether the part is
firm or soft.

5. Perform the
fourth maneuver
a. Place fingers on
both sides of the
uterus
approximately 2
inches above the
inguinal ligaments,

pressing

downward and
inward in the
direction of the birth
canal. Allow fingers
to be carried
downward.

6. Explains the
result of the
procedure to the
patient.
