SOILAB PROGRAM SERIES
User’s Guide
A. INTRODUCTION
SOILAB is a Windows Program for processing Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Test
and Survey Data. This Program has been developed by Engineering Software Research
Center. SOILAB was developed using Borland Delphi 5.0 Professional Edition.
Program Functions:
Each modules can be run independently or called automatically according to the data
type of a currently active database record.
SOILAB has been used for 10 years by many consultants and institutes in Indonesia.
Many projects, large and small have taken SOILAB advantages to get the job done in
less time and effort.
2
B. INSTALLATION
Database option requires Borland Database Engine that can be installed as explained
below.
3
C. MAIN MENU
After clicking the SOILAB icon, the program will appear on screen, displaying its main
menu and database browser.
User can browse previous stored test data through the database and call the appropriate
test module by clicking TEST MODULE button.
User can also call a certain test module directly, create new data and store it to text file
which can be loaded to database afterward.
MENU EXPLANATION:
Project No : Project No Id
Project Name : Name of Project
Location : Project Location
Test No : No. Test Data
Test Type : Type of Test Data
Test Note : Additional Note
Test Data : Formatted Text Data (Image of Text file data for each test)

IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO USE DATABASE:
Sometime we just need to print a certain test graphics and do not want to store our data
into the database, (although you can always store any test data under project name
DUMMY). In this case do:
1. Run SOILAB
2. Select TEST from menu bar
3. Select Test Module that you want to use
4. Enter new data appropriately
5. Goto Page TEXT DATA
6. Select Button GRAPH to display graphics and print it
7. Select Button SAVE to save the data to formatted text file
8. The data will be saved to harddisk and can be read any time you need
EXAMPLE DATA:
1. Run SOILAB
2. Select TEST from menu bar
3. Select Test Module that you want to use
4. Goto Page TEXT DATA
6
5. Select Button READ
6. Select the example file : EXAMPLE.*
7. The example file will be read from harddisk and displayed on screen
1. Run SOILWIN
2. Select Test Module that you want to use
3. Goto Page TEXT DATA
4. Select Button READ
5. Select the example file : EXAMPLE.*
6. The example file will be read from harddisk and displayed on screen
7
MENU EXPLANATION COMMON TO ALL TEST MODULES:

CANCEL - Close Module
8
D. TEST MODULES
After Clicking Test Module for Boring Log Data or calling Boring Log Test Module
Program, the screen will look like this:
The boring log program can display about 110 standard patterns of Soil and Rock and
AASHTO symbol patterns. User can display and print the available pattern by clicking
SYMBOL button.
After entering complete data, user can see and print the boring log graphics by clicking
GRAPH button.
9
The “Export DXF” button is provided to send the boring log graphics to AutoCad R14
DXF file. Because Autocad does not have a similar pattern library, SOILAB will stored
each line of the pattern as true line, resulting in a large DXF file.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.BOR extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
10
D.2. DUTCH CONE PENETRATION TEST
SOILAB provides module for analysing and drawing CPT (Sondir) test data.
SOILAB provides option for 2.5 tonnes and 10 tonnes CPT machine. User can enter also
other machine with different capacity.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.CPT extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
11
D.3. GRAIN SIZE DISTRIBUTION ANALYSIS
SOILAB provides module for analysing and drawing grain size distribution chart
according to ASTM code. The test data are taken from Sieve Analysis and Hydrometer
Analysis, which can be entered into two tables.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.GRZ extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
12
D.4. ATTERBERG LIMIT TEST
SOILAB provides module for analysing and drawing result from Atterberg Limit Test
(Soil Plasticity Test).
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.ATB extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
13
D.5. SOIL CLASSIFICATION
The Soil Classification Module can classify a soil data from Plasticilty Limit Test and
Grain Size Analysis into ASTM/Unified, AASHTO, FAA classification and also will
gives you recommendation from US Army Corps of Engineers about soil improvement
and usage.
Typically each classification module needs data for D10,D30, D60, etc. in mm and
information about organic content, liquid limit and plasticity index of the soil sample.
14
Then each classification method will give its soil suymbol and description according to
the input data.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.USC extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
15
D.6. DIRECT SHEAR TEST
SOILAB provides module for analysing and drawing result from Direct Shear Test.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.DSH extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
16
D.7. UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TEST
SOILAB provides module for analysing and drawing result from Unconfined
Compression Test.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.UNC extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
17
D.8. TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TEST
SOILAB provides module for analysing and drawing result from Triaxial Compression
Test. Pore pressure and initial pressure data can be entered for UU, CU and CD Test.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.TRX extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
18
Stress Path Curve:
19
D.9. CONSOLIDATION TEST
SOILAB provides module for analysing and drawing result from Consolidation Test.
Variable Number and sequence of Load Pattern can be entered.
User controlled spline Interpolation and tangential line generator will be used to generate
lines needed for calculation.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.CON extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
20
Spline curve and Tangential/Regression line can be turn on or off.
21
D.10. COMPACTION TEST
SOILAB provides module for analysing and drawing result from Compaction Test.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.CMP extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
22
D.11. CALIFORNIA BEARING RATIO (CBR) TEST
SOILAB provides module for analysing and drawing result from CBR Test.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.CBR extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
23
D.12. SETTLEMENT ANALYSIS
SOILAB provides module for analysing settlement of any point location (XYZ) due to
any number of various load distribution shape.
The program uses Numerical Integration for accurate result.
User can print the formatted text data, stored to a file and read again from a file from
disk with *.SET extension. Please use this facility for back-up and report purpose.
