Sheet (3)
DC Motor

1.An 8-pole, lap wound armature has 960 conductors and a flux of 0.04w per pole runs at 400 rpm. Calculate
the generated armature emf. Find the generated emf if the flux is halved and the speed is increased to 600rpm.
(256V, 192V)

2. A 3.37 kW, 1725 rpm, 125V shunt motor has a full load efficiency of 82.5%. Calculate the input power, line
current and output torque.
(4084.85 W, 32.68 A, 18.66 Nm)

3. A DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.1 Ω runs at 1000 rpm. The supply voltage is 250 V and
the field resistance is 250 Ω. The input power equals 6.5 kW. The supply voltage is reduced to 230 V and
the field resistance is reduced to 115 Ω. Find the new speed to keep the motor torque constant.
(462.12 rpm)

4. A 440 V, shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.8 Ω and field resistance of 200Ω. Determine the back
e.m.f. when giving an output of 7.46 kW at 85% efficiency.
(425.8 V)

5. A 500 V, 36 kW, 1000 rpm dc shunt motor has on full-load an efficiency of 90%. The armature circuit
resistance of 0.24 Ω and there is a total voltage drop of 2 V at the brushes. The field current is 1.8 A.
Determine The full-load line current, Full-load developed torque.
(80 A, 357.87 Nm, 4 Ω)

6. A 50 HP, 240 V dc separately excited motor is operating at 1000 rpm. The motor draws 7800 watts from
dc supply. The total armature resistance is 0.221 . Find:
a. The constant (Ke) of the motor.Hint:The field flux remains constant.
b.The motor speed if the terminal voltage is reduced by 20% and the power drawn remains the same.
(0.2328 V/rpm, 786.2 rpm)
7.A separately excited dc motor is rated at 100 HP, 600 V at 1200 rpm. The total armature resistance is 0.24
ohms. When the motor is delivering 75 HP at 1200 rpm its efficiency is 88%. At the 75 HP output find:
a. The motor armature current
b. The back emf (Ea)
c. Torque at the shaft
d. An estimate of the mechanical losses.
(106 A, 574.6 V, 445.236 N.m, 4957.6 W)

8. A separately-excited d.c. motor used to drive a fan whose torque is proportional to the square of the speed.
When the armature circuit of the motor is connected across 200 V, it takes armature current of 16 A and the
motor runs at speed of 1000 rpm. If the speed of the motor is to be reduced to 750 rpm, calculate the required
terminal voltage and the current drawn by the motor at the new speed. Assume the armature resistance is 0.5
Ω and neglect brush voltage drop.
( 9 A, 150 V )
9. A 120-V dc shunt motor having an armature circuit resistance of 0.2 Ω and a field circuit
resistance of 60 Ω , draws a line current of 40 A at full-load. The rated full-load speed is
1800 rpm. If the magnetic saturation and armature reaction are negligible, calculate
a. The field current.
b. The full-load armature current.
c. The full-load back EMF.
d. The full-load developed power.
e. The full-load developed torque.
f. The half-full load armature current. (Hint: Td = 0.5 TdFL).
g. The half-full load back EMF.
h. The motor speed at half-full load.
i. The armature current at the instant of starting.
j. The value of the external resistance, that should be connected in series with the
armature winding to reduce the starting current to 200% of the full-load current.
(2 A, 38 A, 112.4 V, 4.271 kW, 22.67 N.m, 19 A, 116.2 V, 1860 rpm, 600 A, 1.38 Ω)

10. A 200-V, d.c. shunt motor takes 4 A at no-load when running at 700 r.p.m. The field resistance is 100 Ω.
The resistance of armature at standstill gives a drop of 6 volts across armature terminals when 10 A were
passed through it.If the normal input of the motor is 8 kW
Calculate:
a. speed on load
b. The developed torque in N-m
c. efficiency.
