Section—A
(Very Short Answer Type Questions)
1. Attempt all questions. Each question carries 1 mark.
(a) What are the applications of square threads ?

(b) Develop R 10 series from 1 to 10. (CO1, EV)
(c) Define Endurance life. (CO2, RE)
(d) Identify the compositions and its percentage in
16 Ni3Cr2. (CO1,UN)
(e) Name the alloy steel containing : (CO1, UN)
Carbon = 0.12–0.18%
Silicon = 0.15–0.35%
Manganese = 0.40–0.60%
Chromium = 0.50–0.80%

Section—B
(Short Answer Type Questions)

2. Attempt all questions. Each question carries 4 marks.


(a) Explain the procedure to minimize the stress
concentration in keyways. (CO2 AN)
Or
Identify the process involved for the approximate
estimation of endurance limit.
(b) A manufacturer is interested in starting a business
with five different models of tractors ranging
from 7.5 to 75 kW capacities. Specify power
capacities of the models. (CO3, EV)

It is required to standardize eleven shafts from
100 to 1000 mm diameter. Specify their
diameters.
(c) Enlist the different types of keys ? Give their
applications. (CO3 AN)
Or
What is the difference between rigid and flexible
couplings ?
(d) How will you designate multiple-start trapezoidal
threads ? (CO5 AN)
Or
What are the disadvantages of multiple-start
screws ?
(e) What are the advantages of concentric spring ?

What are the objectives of series and parallel
connections of springs ?
(f) An electric motor weighing 10 kN is lifted by
means of an eye bolt as shown in Fig. The eye
bolt is screwed into the frame of the motor. The
eye bolt has coarse threads. It is made of plain

carbon steel 30C8 (Syt = 400 N/mm2) and the


factor of safety is 6. Determine the size of the
bolt. (CO5, EV)

Or
Two plates are fastened by means of two bolts as
shown in Fig. The bolts are made of plain carbon
steel 30C8 (Syt = 400 N/mm2) and the factor of
safety is 5. Determine the size of the bolts if,

Section—C
(Long Answer Type Questions)
3. Attempt all questions. Each question carries 8 marks.
(a) Brake band attached to the hinge by means of a
riveted joint is shown in Fig. Determine the size
of the rivets needed for the load of 10 kN. Also,
determine the width of the band. The permissible
stresses for the band and rivets in tension, shear
and compression are 80, 60 and 120 N/mm2
respectively. Assume margin (m) = 1.5d,
transverse pitch (pt) = p. Find the pitch of the
rivets. (CO3, EV)

Or
The layout of a transmission shaft carrying two
pulleys B and C and supported on bearings A and
D is shown in Fig. Power is supplied to the shaft
by means of a vertical belt on the pulley B, which
is then transmitted to the pulley C carrying a

horizontal belt. The maximum tension in the belt


on the pulley B is 2.5 kN. The angle of wrap for
both the pulleys is 180° and the coefficient of
friction is 0.24. The shaft is made of plain carbon
steel 30C8 (Syt = 400 N/mm2) and the factor of
safety is 3. Determine the shaft diameter on
strength basis.

(b) A polished steel bar 30C8 (Sut = 1250 N/mm2) is


subjected to axial tensile force P. It has a groove
2 mm deep and having a raidus of 3 mm. The
notch sensitivity factor at the groove is .95. The
outer diameter of the bar is 30 mm. The
endurance limit in completely reversed bending is
600 MPa. Find the maximum force that the bar
can carry for 105 cycles with 90% reliability.

Or
A forged steel bar 50 mm in diameter is subjected
to a reversed bending stress of 250 N/mm2. the
bar is made of steel 40C8 (Sut = 600 N/mm2).
Calculate the life of the bar for a reliability of
90% (i. e. kc = 0.897).

(c) Three M20 bolts are used to connect a steel plate


with a channel section structural member, as
shown in figure below. The material of the bolt is
50C4 with Sut = 660 MPa, and Syt = 460 MPa.

Factor of safety is 2.0. How much eccentric load


(P) can be carried by the steel plate ? (CO5, EV)

Or
A bracket is attached to a horizontal column by
means of three identical bolts as shown in fig.
The maximum permissible shear stress for the
bolt meterial is 60 N/mm2.
(i) Which bolt is subjected to maximum shear
force ?
(ii) What is the magnitude of maximum force ?
(iii) Determine the diameter of bolt.
