6 Handling & Storage
a. General Requirements:
All electrical cables shall be handled and stored in accordance with the manufacturer's
recommendations and project specifications.
Only authorized and trained personnel shall be allowed to handle cable drums to avoid mechanical
damage.
b. Handling:
Cable drums shall be handled using suitable lifting equipment such as a forklift or crane with drum
clamps/slings to prevent damage to the drum and cable.
Rolling of cable drums shall be done only in the direction of the arrow marked on the drum flange to
prevent loosening or internal damage to the cable.
Cables must not be dropped or dragged over rough surfaces to avoid damage to the outer sheath.
Drums should be moved carefully and never rolled over uneven ground.
c. Storage Conditions:
Cable drums / Cable shall be stored on firm, level, and dry ground to prevent sinking or rolling.
Drums shall be stored in upright (vertical) position and chocked to prevent accidental rolling.
Storage area must be well-ventilated and protected from excessive heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
Cable ends shall be sealed with end caps to prevent moisture ingress or contamination.
Drums shall not be stacked one over another.
d. Protection from Environmental Damage:
Drums stored outdoors shall be covered with weatherproof, breathable covers (tarpaulin or similar) to
protect from rain, direct sunlight, and dust.
Adequate clearance shall be maintained between drums and walls or other materials to allow ventilation
and avoid water accumulation.
Regular inspection of stored cables shall be carried out to ensure no signs of damage or degradation due
to environmental exposure
e. Site Storage:
Designated storage areas at site shall be located away from heavy traffic zones and protected from
construction debris and machinery.
Cables shall be stored as close as practical to the installation area to minimize handling.
Access to the storage area shall be restricted to authorized personnel only.
A register/logbook shall be maintained for all cables received, issued, and installed.
