Overview - Release 30 04.30.000.5.0xx

FLARE Release 30 04.30.000.5.004 introduced support for several new features including:
• SATA EFD Support - This version of FLARE supports SATA Enterprise Flash Drives
(EFDs). This type of drive is unique compared to traditional SATA drives. They are based
on semiconductor flash memory chips instead of rotating hard disk drives. As a result,
they do not have the seek time delays and the rotational latency delays that are
associated with hard disk drives. Therefore, solid state drives are capable of very high I/O
performance.
• FC EFD and SATA EFD Support in Same Disk Array Enclosure - This version of FLARE
supports both FC and SATA Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs) in the same Disk Array
Enclosure (DAE).
• FC EFD and SATA EFD Support in Same RAID Group - This version of FLARE supports
both FC and SATA Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs) in the same RAID group.
• VMware vStorage API Support - This version of FLARE supports VMware vStorage Full
Copy Acceleration. This new feature enables better VMware data copy performance by
cloning file blocks within the array instead of moving data back and forth to the host
application. Also, this version of FLARE supports Compare and Swap. This is a new
functionality within FLARE that allows VMware to improve upon the performance of their
pre-existing LUN locking mechanism which is used to prevent cluster-aware applications
from sharing the contents of a virtual disk on more than one host at any given time.
• Rebuild Avoidance - This version of FLARE supports a new feature that enhances
FLARE's backend error handling to avoid full rebuilds during single path failures. When a
path failure occurs (broken LCC or backend cable), IO is routed to the SP with access to
all the drives in the RAID group. As a result, a rebuild of the impacted drives is avoided
when the failed path is restored. Write caching must be enabled on all LUNs in the RAID
group in order to take advantage of this feature.
This feature is not supported on the FLARE system drives. IO will continue to be processed
on the degraded path for RAID groups that experience single path failure on these drives.

• Virtual Provisioning™ - EMC Virtual Provisioning software provides ease of storage

provisioning. All the LUNs are provisioned out of a storage pool, thereby simplifying
the creation and allocation of storage capacity. The basic elements of Virtual
Provisioning used to allocate the storage are storage pools, fully provisioned LUNs,
and thinly provisioned LUNs. For thinly provisioned LUNS, the Thin Provisioning
Enabler needs to be installed on the storage system. All LUNs in a storage pool
support shrink and expand operations. The LUNs also have a tiering preference used
to allocate the storage from a pool with mixed drives with different performance
characteristics.
For more information about the Virtual Provisioning feature, refer to the Virtual
Provisioning Release Notes, P/N 300-011-115.
• FAST Cache - FAST Cache is data storage on Flash drives. Unisphere 1.0 supports
FAST Cache with a licensed enabler. For more details on the Fast Cache feature, refer
to the EMC FAST Cache Release Notes, P/N 300-011-117.
• FAST (Fully Automated Storage Tiering) - FAST allows the system to automatically
move data, at a sub-LUN level, which is frequently accessed, to faster physical storage
within a pool, as well as move data that is infrequently accessed to less expensive
physical storage within the pool. Unisphere 1.0 supports auto-tiering for pool-based
storage with a licensed enabler. For more details on Fast feature, refer to the EMC
FAST Release Notes, P/N 300-011-118.
• Block Data Compression - To save space, Unisphere 1.0 introduces the ability to
compress LUNs. Unisphere 1.0 supports Block Data Compression with a licensed
enabler. For more details on the Block Data Compression feature, refer to the EMC
Data Compression Release Notes, P/N 300-011-116.

and CX4-960C8X). All other CX4 models continued to ship with 04.28 until November 2009.

Overview - Release 29 04.29.000.5.0xx

FLARE Release 29 04.29.000.5.001 introduced support for several new features including:
• Support for 10Gb/s iSCSI UltraFlex I/O modules.
• Virtualization-aware Navisphere Manager – Enables CLARiiON CX4 users and VMware
Administrators to reduce infrastructure reporting time from hours to minutes.
• Previous releases have allowed only a single IP address to be assigned to each iSCSI
physical port. With this release, the ability to define multiple virtual iSCSI ports on each
physical port has been added, along with the ability to tag each virtual port with a unique VLAN
tag. VLAN tagging has also been added to the single Management Port interface. It should be
noted that the IP address and VLAN tag assignments should be carefully coordinated with
those supporting the network infrastructure where the storage system will operate.
• Built-in policy-based spin down of idle SATA II drives for CLARiiON CX4 – Lowers power
requirements in environments such as test and development in physical and virtual
environments. Features include a simple management via a “set it and forget it” policy,
complete spin down of inactive drives during times of zero I/O activity, and drives
automatically spin back up after a "first I/O" request is received.
• Virtual Provisioning Phase 2 – Support for MirrorView and SAN Copy replication on thin
LUNs has been added.

• Search feature – Provides users with the ability to search for a wide-variety of objects across
their storage systems. Objects can be either logical (e.g., LUN) or physical (e.g., disks).
• Replication roles – Three additional roles have to be added in Navisphere: “Local Replication
Only”, “Replication” and “Replication/ Recovery”.
• Dedicated VMware software files – VMware software files (i.e. NaviSecCLI, Navisphere
Initialization Wizard) are now separate from those of the Linux Operating System.
• Software filename standardization – Increases TCE by standardizing all CLARiiON software
filenames beginning with FLARE Release 29.
• Changing SP IP addresses – SP IP addresses can now be changed without rebooting the
SP. Only the Management Sever will need to be rebooted from the Setup page, which results
in no storage system downtime.
• Linux 64-bit server software – Native 64-bit Linux server software files simplify installation by
eliminating the need to gather and load 32-bit DLLs.
• Solaris x64 Navisphere Host Agent – Release 29 marks the introduction of Solaris 64-bit
Navisphere Host Agent software. This Host Agent is backward compatible with older FLARE
release. Refer to the Release Notes for more information.

FLARE Release 28 04.28.000.5.501 introduced support for several new features including:
• Support for Enterprise Flash Drives (EFD).
• Virtual Provisioning – Delivers increased utilization, just-in-time capacity allocation, and
simplified capacity planning for CLARiiON CX4 environments. EMC Virtual Provisioning
software runs on an EMC storage system with virtual provisioning enabled on the
system. Virtual provisioning is the capability of presenting more storage capacity to a
host than is physically available. This allows the user to provision the storage capacity
without actually assigning the same amount of physical storage; rather the physical
storage is assigned on demand from a shared storage pool (thin pool). The storage
administrator monitors and replenishes each thin pool, not each LUN, thereby simplifying
the creation and allocation of the storage capacity. The basic elements of virtual
provisioning are thin pools and thin LUNs used to allocate the storage.
• 960-Drive Expansion Enabler – allows customers to use up to 8 back-end buses and up
to 960 disk drives on a CX4-960 storage system.
• CX4 Series Data-In-Place Upgrades (Hardware Model Conversions) – For more
information, refer to the CLARiiON CX4 Series Product Support Bulletins (PSBs).

FAST LUN Migrator

Overview
The FAST LUN Migrator is an optional software product released with FLARE 29 used to identify
and move LUNs that can benefit from storage tiering. FLARE 30 is releasing a new suite of
storage efficiency products that should be used for storage tiering. FAST LUN Migrator may still
benefit customers who have not upgraded to FLARE 30 or who still use conventional RAID
groups instead of pools.
FAST LUN Migrator works in conjunction with Unisphere Analyzer to provide users with analysis
of their Fibre Channel drive environment, and targets LUNs that are candidates for movement to
Flash drives for improved performance or to high-capacity SATA drives for reduced storage cost.
LUNs approved by users for migration are moved automatically in the background using Virtual
LUN capability. Note the following:
• An upgrade to FAST will be made available at a reduced rate to those customers who
purchased the original FAST Suite or the FAST Add-On.
• FAST LUN Migrator is still available for purchase. However, the new FAST product
should be positioned for storage Tiering.

• EMC has delivered a “CLARiiON FAST Suite” to simplify both ordering and consumption.
The CLARiiON FAST Suite is a package that provides the complete set of FAST
performance management products: the new FAST LUN Migrator and Navisphere®
Analyzer. Note that this suite package also includes Navisphere Quality of Service
Manager (NQM); however, NQM is not required for FAST LUN Migrator activities.
• CLARiiON CX4 customers who already own Navisphere Analyzer can purchase the
FAST Add-On, which is more affordable than purchasing the full CLARiiON FAST Suite.
The FAST Add-On is for field-upgrade orders only and an existing Navisphere Analyzer
license on the storage system is a prerequisite. The FAST Add-On includes just the
FAST LUN Migrator software. If Navisphere Analyzer has not previously been purchased,
the customer must purchase the CLARiiON FAST Suite.

Limitations and Restrictions

Original GA Date: December 17, 2009
Hardware Restrictions: FAST LUN Migrator is only supported on CX4 series storage systems.
Software Restrictions: The software can be used to analyze archive files on CX4 systems
running FLARE Release 04.28.x or later; however, FLARE Release 04.29.x or later is required
for LUN migration activities. Navisphere Analyzer must be installed and enabled on the storage
system.
Customer-Installable: FAST LUN Migrator is customer-installable; however, LUN Migrator
Assessment Services are strongly recommended for any customer choosing to implement the
initial version of FAST LUN Migrator. Refer to the Related Service Offerings section below for
more information.

Other Limitations:
• FAST LUN Migrator software resides and operates on a Windows system. In addition,
the FAST LUN Migrator enabler must be installed on the storage system.
• FAST LUN Migrator only analyzes Fibre Channel LUNs. LUNs in Thin Pools (or virtually
provisioned LUNs) and on EFD or SATA drives are not supported.
• FAST LUN Migrator only moves LUNs in one direction, which means that users should
have a good understanding of what data is being moved before initiating a migration.
Moving LUNs from EFD or SATA drives to other tiers is manual.
• In general, LUNs in Storage Groups that support a Celerra should not be migrated. FAST
LUN Migrator software will leverage a naming convention employed by Celerra to
determine this but this convention can be overwritten by users. LUNs with the Celerra
naming convention will not be analyzed. LUNs with the Celerra naming convention or
LUNs in a storage group with Celerra naming convention will not be migrated.

Fully Automated Storage Tiering (FAST) with Sub-LUN Tiering

Overview
Fully Automated Storage Tiering (FAST) is a new EMC data service that has been added in the
FLARE 30 release. FAST will move 1 GB chunks of data at the sub-LUN level, automatically and
according to customer-defined schedules rather than at the LUN level per manual user invocation.
FAST will move frequently accessed data to faster physical storage within a pool, as well as
move data that is infrequently accessed to less expensive physical storage within the pool.
You can control when FAST will move data to prevent any impact to host I/O requests during
known periods of high system usage. By using FAST, you can improve overall system
performance without investing in additional high-performance physical drives. You can apply
FAST to any or all pool-based LUNs on a storage system.
FAST operates in the background, while the LUNs are online and available for host access. Its
data movement speed can be controlled to minimize any impact on overall system performance.
FAST is managed through the Unisphere interface and can be configured on a per-LUN basis.
Customers can choose among four tiering policies, described below. Data relocation can be
triggered manually or scheduled to occur automatically, as frequently or as infrequently as
desired. Statistics are aggregated, and the quantity of data that will be promoted and/or demoted
during the next scheduled relocation is displayed to the user.
• Auto-Tiering: This is the default and recommended setting. It initially allocates data
across all drive types in the pools and subsequently ensures that data is promoted and
demoted based on observed I/O activity.
• Highest Tier Preferred: This setting fits as much data as possible on the highest-
performing tier, regardless of I/O activity. This setting optimizes for performance.
• Lowest Tier Preferred: This setting fits as much data as possible on the lowest-cost tier
available, regardless of I/O activity. This setting optimizes for total cost of ownership.
• No Data Movement: This option appears only after tiering has occurred initially.
It ensures no subsequent movement of data on the designated LUN.
Customers can allow the system to tier data for them by keeping the default setting of Auto-
Tiering, or manually tier data at the time of allocation by selecting the highest- or lowest-tier
preferred settings. In this case, data will be tiered during the next scheduled or manually invoked
relocation window. An example where this might be useful is to relocate cold data to a higher tier
of storage in preparation for a special event (like a quarterly report) and return it to the proper tier
after the event is over.

FAST Cache
Overview
EMC FAST Cache uses Enterprise Flash Drives and helps with both read and write performance
for frequently accessed data when this feature is enabled for a LUN (or LUNs).
When enabled on LUNs composed of standard rotating hard disk drives, FAST Cache will
automatically migrate frequently accessed data from the hard drives onto Flash drives for
improved access times and higher I/O rates.
FAST Cache is configurable for a maximum capacity of up to 2 terabytes (TB). These capacities
will improve FAST Cache’s ability to track a significant number of the active requests in a system
at any given time, increasing the effectiveness of the cache.
FAST Cache works with EMC FLARE DRAM cache to provide improved response for active
workloads. By shifting more accesses to the faster Flash drives, fewer system resources are tied
up waiting for responses from slower media.
FAST Cache also improves storage efficiency by allowing increased use of high-capacity, slower
rotating disk drives. These high-capacity drives can store application data at lower cost, and
when the application is active, data is migrated to the FAST Cache to provide the highest level of
performance.
EMC FAST Cache is integrated into EMC Unisphere™ software. Unisphere will automatically
offer choices for FAST Cache configurations depending on the array model, and the number and
size of Flash drives installed. Depending on the model and configuration, consult the following
table for more information.

Block Data Compression

Overview
EMC Data Compression uses standard data compression algorithms to reduce space allocated
to LUNs. Compression may be applied to RAID group LUNs and pool-based LUNs. RAID group
LUNs chosen for compression will be migrated to a pool of the user’s choice, while pool-based
LUNs will remain in the pools in which they were created. Compressed LUNs will be thin LUNs.
The space saved by using compression is reflected in the consumed capacity of the compressed
thin LUN, which also includes space savings due to Virtual Provisioning. The amount of reduction
resulting from compression is dependent on the mix of data types being stored; however, unlike
deduplication, it does not depend on the presence of multiple copies of the same data.
Compression operates in the background, while the LUNs are available for host access.
Host writes are not compressed in real time to avoid performance overhead. When sufficient data
is written to a compressed LUN, the system will automatically attempt to compress the
uncompressed data in the background. You can control the rate of the background operations to
minimize any impact on overall system performance.

Note the following:

• Block Data Compression is sold as an optional software enabler and is priced by
platform.
• Block Data Compression works on all LUNs. If Block Data Compression is applied to a
RAID group LUN, the data will be compressed and migrated to a thin LUN. If Block Data
Compression is applied to a pool LUN, that LUN will be made thin if it is not already.
• The compression migration and conversion to thin LUNs is totally transparent to host I/O
activity.

Limitations and Restrictions

Original GA Date: September 2, 2010
Hardware Restrictions: Block Data Compression is only supported on CX4 series storage
systems.
Software Restrictions: CX4 systems running FLARE Release 04.30.x or later.
Customer-Installable: Block Data Compression is customer-installable.

Other Limitations:
• Block Data Compression does not support LUNS used by Celerra. Celerra provides file
system compression as part of the Celerra data deduplication feature.
• The response times of compressed I/O are not as predictable as those of thick LUNs and
are more difficult for the UQM control algorithms to manage. FAST Cache works for Pool-
based LUNs at the Pool level.
• You cannot turn on compression for private LUNs.

MirrorView/Asynchronous and MirrorView/Synchronous

Overview
EMC MirrorView/Synchronous (MirrorView/S) software maintains a synchronous online copy of
local data at a remote site. MirrorView supports distances of up to 200 kilometers (approximately
120 miles) with optical link extenders. When the storage system is powered up, each SP
executes the MirrorView/S software, which manages all MirrorView/S features.
EMC MirrorView/Asynchronous (MirrorView/A) software maintains an asynchronous online copy
of local data at a remote site. The remote copy is updated at user-defined intervals and, with
either the use of FC-IP bridge devices or direct iSCSI connection; the remote site can be an
unlimited distance from the local site.

Navisphere Management Suite

Overview
Navisphere Manager has been replaced with Unisphere as of FLARE Release 30. However,
language localization will not be complete until 90 days after GA. Unisphere is required for many
of the new FLARE 30 Storage Efficiency Services (FAST, FAST Cache, Virtual provisioning/Thick
LUNs and Block Data Compression). It is strongly recommended that Unisphere be used except
in cases where language localization is required. In those instances, continue using Navisphere
Manager until the localized version is available. The FLARE 30 Storage Efficiency Services will
not be supported on Navisphere.

RecoverPoint/RecoverPoint/SE Splitter
Overview
The RecoverPoint/SE system supports CLARiiON storage arrays (when using CLARiiON
Splitters) with hosts running operating systems compatible with RecoverPoint and the CLARiiON
array. The RecoverPoint Splitter for CLARiiON consists of the following components:
• A RecoverPoint Splitter engine package, also known as the driver, (i.e. the code that
implements the functionality) within FLARE. All current FLARE bundles include the
splitter driver for version 3.0.x (just as they include the engines for all layered features,
regardless of whether or not they are enabled).
• An enabler package for RecoverPoint Splitter. This functions the same way as an
enabler for any other CLARiiON feature (i.e. MirrorView, SnapView, etc.) in that it is
installed once, and allows use of the functionality forever afterwards, regardless of later
upgrades.

Limitations and Restrictions

Original GA Date: May 2008
Hardware Restrictions: The RecoverPoint Splitter is supported on CX4 series and CX3 series
storage systems.
Software Restrictions: Refer to Table 12 below.
Customer-Installable: No (due to complexity)

EMC SAN Copy™ is a storage-system-based software application that copies data between
CLARiiON storage systems, within CLARiiON storage systems, between CLARiiON and
Symmetrix® storage systems, and between CLARiiON and qualified non-EMC storage systems.
SAN Copy can copy data directly from a source logical unit on one storage system to destination
logical units on another, without using host resources. SAN Copy can perform multiple copies —
each in its own copy session — simultaneously. The RAID type of the logical units participating in
a copy session does not have to be the same. That is, the source and destination logical units
can be different RAID types.

SnapView (admsnap utility/VSS Provider)

Overview
EMC SnapView is a storage-system-based software application that allows you to create a copy of
a LUN by using either clones or snapshots. You can use the clone or snapshot for data backups,
decision support, data modeling, software application testing, or as a base for temporary
operations on the production data without damaging the original data on the source LUN.
A clone is an actual copy of a LUN and it takes time to create. A snapshot is a virtual point-in-time
copy of a LUN and takes only seconds to create. Depending on your application needs, you can
create clones, snapshots, and snapshots of clones.
The admsnap utility runs on host systems in conjunction with SnapView running on the
CLARiiON storage processors (SPs), and lets you start, activate, deactivate, and stop SnapView
sessions. All admsnap commands are sent to the storage system through the Fibre Channel bus.
EMC VSS Provider is a hardware-based provider service that intercepts and processes requests
for creating point-in-time copies of data through the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service
(VSS). VSS is a set of Component Object Model (COM) application programming interfaces (API)
that provide the backup infrastructure for Windows Server 2003 and 2008 systems.

Virtual Provisioning
Overview
EMC Virtual Provisioning software provides simplified storage provisioning. To accomplish this, all
LUNs are provisioned out of a storage pool, thereby simplifying the creation and allocation of the
storage capacity. The basic elements of Virtual Provisioning used to allocate the storage are
storage pools, fully provisioned LUNs, and thinly provisioned LUNs. For thinly provisioned LUNs,
you need to install the Thin Provisioning enabler on the storage system. All LUNs in a storage pool
support shrink and expand operations. Virtual Provisioning can allocate storage from pools that
have mixed drives and different performance characteristics by assigning a tier preference to the
LUN.

FLARE 30 Enhancements
• Thick LUNs
• LUN expand and shrink
• Tiering preference
• Per-tier tracking support of pool usage
• RAID 1/0 support for pools
• Increased limits for drive usage in pools.

EMC Unisphere Service Manager (USM)

Overview
The EMC Unisphere Service Manager (USM) is a Java-based desktop application that helps
users update, install, and maintain their storage-system hardware and software as well as
provide contact and storage-system information to a service provider.

• Unisphere Service Manager (USM) replaces the existing Navisphere Service Taskbar.
• Tasks are organized in easy-to-understand sections and subsections, to allow for
intuitive navigation to USM’s wizards and configuration displays.
• EMC Celerra systems can now be members of EMC CLARiiON domains. You can have
both Celerra and CLARiiON systems in the same heterogeneous domain.
• Unisphere Service Manager allows users to scope the entire user interface to a single
CLARiiON or Celerra system, so that they can easily service a single system. They can
also, in the same session, scope the UI to all systems in their domain, so that they can
access all systems within the domain.

The utilities within USM are used to perform hardware installation tasks, such as adding a new
disk drive or disk-array enclosure or installing I/O modules and/or SFPs. USM can be used to
perform hardware maintenance tasks, such as replacing a faulted disk drive or verifying that the
storage system is operating normally. USM can also be used to update storage-system software.

EMC ESRS IP Client for CLARiiON Version 1.0.0.1

Overview
The EMC ESRS IP Client for CLARiiON (formerly CLARalert) software suite monitors EMC
CLARiiON storage systems with EMC Unisphere/Navisphere Manager enabled and provides
event notification through ConnectEMC. The installation wizard can be used to create a new
ESRS IP Client installation or to upgrade an existing CLARalert installation (version 6.19 or later).
The service provider must upgrade pre-6.19 versions of CLARalert to ESRS IP Client. Existing
configuration data will be saved and applied during an upgrade.
During a new ESRS IP Client installation, users will designate the monitor station and portal
system to configure their centralized monitoring environment. The storage system designated as

Support Strategy
FLARE upgrades can be performed by EMC, Authorized Service Provider (ASP) partners, Service
Delivery (SD) partners, Service Enabled (SE) partners, Authorized Service Network - Support (ASN-
S) partners, Authorized Service Network Implement (ASN-I) partners, and customers by using the
Navisphere Service Taskbar (NST) or the Unisphere Service Manager (USM).
A CCA is no longer required for FLARE upgrades completed by EMC and ASPs. However, if a
Celerra is attached to this environment a Celerra CCA is still required for a software upgrade.
Remote Change Management (RCM) can be scheduled through a link located within the CLARiiON
Procedure Generator (CPG).
Software upgrades (other than FLARE) can be performed by ASP partners, SD partners, SE
partners, ASN-S partners, ASN-I partners, and customers. For ASPs, CSI must be updated.
For ASN-I partners, CSI must be updated using the Partner Notification Tool (PNT) form.
For the latest software/firmware End of Primary Support (EOPS) and End of Service Life (EOSL)
information, refer to the applicable Release and End of Life Dates on PowerLink. From the PowerLink
homepage, select Support > Interoperability and Product Lifecycle Information > Release and End of
Life Dates.
The EMC Escalation Policy for EMC personnel for hardware and software is located on the Global
Services web site (http://www.cs.isus.emc.com) by selecting Site Index > P (for Policies and
Procedures) > Equipment Software and Maintenance Policies > EMC Engagement Escalation and
Notification Policy.
EMC Unisphere Service Manager (USM) or Navisphere Service Taskbar (NST) should be used for all
FLARE upgrades and software enabler installations. Download and install the latest version of the
NST on your laptop or on any Windows station you will be using to perform the NDU.

Warranty
The FLARE software warranty period is coterminous with the CLARiiON storage system. CLARiiON
layered software products include a 90-day media-only warranty and optional Premium Software
Maintenance coverage is available.
Note: Customers that do not have an active warranty/maintenance contract are not entitled to FLARE
code upgrades on a Time and Materials (T&M) basis. These customers are required to purchase a
maintenance agreement and incur a charge for the time period of the contract lapse or
discontinuation. For more information, refer to the Continuous Coverage Product Maintenance
(CCPM) Terms document available on Powerlink (http://powerlink.emc.com).
The latest warranty and maintenance terms are published on: http://powerlink.emc.com (Navigation:
Home > Support > Request Support > Maintenance and Warranty Information).
Fore detailed warranty information, refer to the applicable CLARiiON hardware model Product
Support Bulletin (PSB).
