If there is a remedy when trouble strikes,

What reason is there for despondency?
And if there is no help for it,
What is the use of being sad?

So come what may, I’ll never harm

My cheery happiness of mind.
Depression never brings me what I want…
My virtue will be warped and marred by it.
— Nagarjuna

The authentic self is the best part of a human being. It’s the part of you that already cares, that is
already passionate about evolution. When your authentic self miraculously awakens and becomes
stronger than your ego, then you will truly begin to make a difference in this world. You will
literally enter into a partnership with the creative principle.

Introduction
by Nicholas Tharcher
If you are a fan of Christopher Hyatt’s work, you are probably aware that the
publication of Hard Zen, Soft Heart has been a long time coming. Though it is just
now being released in 2013—five years after Hyatt’s death—the first drafts were
written in the 1990s. It has gone through several revisions, three editors and a recent
revisitation by co-author Diana Rose Hartmann.
The focus of the book has changed several times over its history. At one time the
authors envisioned it as a “Zen” book in the “hit you over the head” style of Hyatt’s
classic Undoing Yourself with Energized Meditation and Other Devices. But
because some readers have criticized Hyatt’s work as too “hard hitting” and
“demanding” the authors came to envision Hard Zen in an entirely different way: as
a more “gentle” entrée into Dr. Hyatt’s work, something that a wider audience could
connect with. However, before the book was finished circumstances changed.
Hyatt had always been dissatisfied with the inability of the written word to convey
the details of the many physical exercises that were key to his methods. When,
around the time that Hard Zen was being written, new audio and video technology
became more accessible, Hyatt finally felt able to demonstrate his methods through
these media, and he switched his attention to the development of the Radical
Undoing and Energized Hypnosis series. So Hard Zen sat on the shelf…until
now.

For those who are not familiar with Hyatt’s work, it will become clear very
quickly that—“gentle” as the approach of this book may be—Hyatt was
fundamentally an elitist who recognized that most people are satisfied to live “a life
of quiet desperation” rather than undertake the difficult process of transcending the
consequences of the ragtag physiology that evolution has built.
As a trained scientist, Hyatt gave great credence to the remarkable work done
over the past few years on the structure and physiology of the human brain in order
to better understand the true nature of homo sapiens and the future of the human
species. He concluded that, in its current form, it has no future. Only by conscious,
deliberate re-engineering—essentially creating an entirely new species with a very
different brain structure—can homo normalis be anything but a dead end. The
technology to do this is almost here and, among a few, there is the will to do it.
Whether this can be done in a world so terrified of itself, only time will tell. (Science
fiction writers have investigated this theme many times…and in their stories the
outcome does not generally go well…)
However, for the species as it is today there are a few techniques that can help
rewire (some) brains to (some) degree and improve the overall condition of (some)
mutant individuals (somewhat)…but those methods require a great deal of time,
dedication and focus—something most are not prepared to do.
If you are among those few that Hyatt considered the true elite, you are probably
“successful” already and may not need his methods…unless you want to become
even more than you are now. However, if you are among the 10% or so of the
human population that is “in between”—capable of more but living a dead-end life—
Hyatt’s work can have immense value for you…if you are willing to work at it.

Hyatt’s methods are not another rehash of New Age Cosmic Foo Foo platitudes
like “think good thoughts and everything will be wonderful.” As both an expert
occultist and trained scientist Hyatt had no use for such nonsense…and neither
should you. Hyatt cared only about one thing: Does it work?
His methods were originally developed in the 1970s in collaboration with his
longtime friend and mentor Dr. Israel Regardie. Though Regardie may be best
known as a one-time confidant of Aleister Crowley and for his work in the mystical
system called the Golden Dawn, he was also a practicing psychotherapist who made
extensive use of (neo-)Reichian techniques. Together Hyatt and Regardie created a
system which is now available to the layman through Hyatt’s many books, audios
and videos.
The system incorporates breathing and meditation techniques that have been used
for millennia as well as many of the body-centered and hypnotic techniques that
were developed during the 20th century. Together, these techniques work!

****

Following the original intent of the book, Hard Zen opens with a chapter taken
from the earliest editions of Undoing Yourself: “To Know Enlightenment, Not Just
To Know Of It”. And fittingly, the book closes with another chapter from Undoing
Yourself, Diana Hartmann’s “Eris: Chaos as Prerequisite to Change”. Between
those chapters you will find numerous insights into the workings of your brain and
valuable methods to improve its functioning. If you choose to jump into the deep end
of Hyatt’s system, you will find even more: the means to transcend.
Foreword
To live life authentically you must first gain awareness of what causes you to react
in ways that sabotage your happiness. When you learn to respond to life without
being weighed down by the chains of your subconscious and your past, you will
experience true freedom. Freedom from self-defeating habits, painful relationships,
chronic anxiety, and even despair. With a bit of self-awareness, you will learn to
crack the shell of your false self.
A new creature—your authentic Self—waits to be born again! A sense of
wonder will prevail. Like a child, you will begin to perceive the world without the
shades of past traumas or future worries. Free to be your Self and live in the
moment, life becomes a magical, mystical adventure of bliss and love.
Bill Shakespeare, who wrote many plays about unhappy people who had lost their
true Selves, typically sent his discontented characters into a magical forest where,
temporarily free from the trappings and deceit of civilization, they would shed their
false selves (ego) and learn to live authentically. (A famous exception is, of course,
Hamlet, who said: “This above all: To thine own self be true.”) The quest to find
one’s authentic Self is timeless.
In “As You Like It”, a young Duke awakens to his authentic Self in the Forest of
Arden and exclaims (paraphrased):
Are not these woods more free from peril than the envious court? Here feel we but…the seasons’
difference…the icy fang…of the winter ’s wind,
which bites and blows upon my body,
‘till I shrink with cold… (Even so) I smile and say
“This is no flattery: these are (advisors)
that feelingly (teach) me what I am.”
…And this our life exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in every thing.

Take the journey! What do you have to lose but your falseness, misery and pain?
When you crawl out of the shell your subconscious built to protect yourself from
harm during times of trauma, you begin to live with conscious awareness. Each
moment becomes wondrously new. This is the Bliss of Life.
Existential ennui—the great horror of inauthentic life—and the painful cycle of
tension-crisis-relief-tension, ends. As you learn to be true to your authentic self, you
attain the courage to fulfill your potential, acquire inner peace, and keep your calm
center, even when life throws punches.
Sadly, most of us spend our entire lives imprisoned by the past or obsessing about
the future. Fear of the future is the primary cause of greed and hoarding, which
causes more speculation and an increasing compulsiveness to do anything to numb
ourselves from chronic tension. Miserable and terrorized by our fantasies of the
future, we spend what we would save for a relaxing vacation on insurance and
bonds…just in case.
You might ask yourself, “Why are we all so screwed up?” The answer is simple.
Most of us are puppets of automatic reactions that were created due to our past
experiences or traumas. Even when we consciously work to be happier, we often
end up in the same muddle. It isn’t our fault, but there it is all the same.
The pattern is frustrating to say the least.
If you want to truly LIVE, then you must don the hat of a Brain Change
Technician. You DO have the power to change your life. You just need to enter the
Forest of Your Subconscious, find and pull out the roots of a few overgrown trees or
weeds, and cultivate your Self by feeding your Self with words of confidence, love
and self-forgiveness. Drink of the water of Life and learn to be fluid. Use your
pruning shears and Stay Alert, nipping the Weeds of Doubt in the bud.
There is no need to be chained to lifelong therapy, pain, drugs or methods that
offer temporary relief for a month’s paycheck. With self-awareness and work, you
can become the content and amazing human you want to be.
However, most of us spend our lives imprisoned by past memories. In a sense, we
are the sum of our experiences and memories, for better or worse. But, no matter
how painful or traumatic your past was, you need not continue to suffer or repeat
self-defeating behaviors. With a little work, you can become freer and happier.
Most humans are unconscious puppets of automatic reactions caused by past
experiences or traumas. Changing that may seem difficult. How many times have
you strived for a happier future, only to end up in the same stressful state? The
circumstances and players have changed, you tried your best, and yet here you are
again, feeling worse than ever because now you blame yourself for each failure.
Take heart and rid yourself of guilt and shame. It wasn’t You who failed.
Conscious attempts to change using sheer willpower are rarely successful due to the
subterfuge and sabotage of your subconscious programming. In other words, it is
your past memories, hidden deep in the basement of your mind, which prevent you
from reaching your full potential.
As noted in the film Induction, your subconscious is powerful and gets angry
when you (i.e., your conscious mind) attempts to either change or introduce a new
idea. A classical metaphor is Jacob Marley in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol…whose
ghost wears literal chains of his past…

The purpose of this book is threefold. Firstly, to provide you with information that
will help you become aware of the subconscious programming that has prevented
you from attaining your goals and finding peace of mind. Secondly, to offer you tools
so you can change those behaviors and reactions which, due to your subconscious
programming, cause you to constantly re-enact the past. And, thirdly, to help you
manage your cerebral pharmacy and become a first class Brain Change Artist.

Once you are free from the chains of the past, you become free to change. The
exercises herein will teach you to be AWARE of your chains, and learn to Be Here
Now. Like all desirable things, breaking lifelong patterns takes effort and work. But
if you truly want to be free, if you wish to live authentically and feel comfortable in
your own skin, give your Self the beautiful gift of your Self! Diligently practice the
exercises in this book. There is no time like the present, so let’s get started.
To Know Enlightenment, Not Just
To Know Of It
A Zen Statement
You must give up the thing most precious to you.
You must give up the thing which you love so dearly,
the thing that you hold on to
– You must give it up –
– You must give it up. –

There are no tricks to find

ENLIGHTENMENT.
It is not hiding anywhere.
It is HERE and NOW.

You must see that you are frightened,

that something is at STAKE all the time.
Even in your dreams—something is at stake.
ALL THE TIME.

Anything that shocks or disrupts or disturbs You is a helpful friend.

Everything which allows you to sleep,
to be complacent,
will hinder You.

To become in Accordance with your

TRUE POTENTIAL,
you must be in Discordance with your self.

YOUR SELF IS LITERALLY AT STAKE—READY TO BE BURNED—ALL THE

TIME
YET, YOU COMPULSIVELY LOOK FOR FOOD WHICH FEEDS YOU
Anything which delays your END
feeds you.
You digest this diet overabundant with FAT.
You are insatiable and require constant FAT to keep you going.
You use more energy and power maintaining THE ILLUSION
of your insatiable dream than Living.
You will even STRUT to death’s window.

But to Know the DEATHLESS ONE —

you—the strutter—must die.
You must go on a diet—then
starve your false self to DEATH.

You must pull yourself in misery

in cranial pride and historic stupidity.

You must stop strutting around like a fattened COW.

You must stop bowing down to your mistakes.

You must stop your idol worshipping.
You must surrender your misery.

You must stop acting surprised when

something “bad” happens to you

FOR — it is the same old thing.

You must stop reacting to things
By habit.
You must stop proving your story.
You must stop extending the past
into the present or your future will never change.

You must stop defending your stupidity,

— YOUR SLEEP.
You must stop defending
YOUR MISERY.

YOU MUST WAKE UP

You forsake Your Body Mind and Soul to feed this Monster.
He drinks Your blood,
this friend of yours.
you will sacrifice anything and everything to feed him.
Everyone and everything is food for you.
Whether people treat you good or bad is food for you.
you are so weak yet He is so strong.
Why do you prefer the insatiable one to HIM?

you oppose — you conform — all is food for you

you agree — you disagree — all is food for you.
you render opinions on everything
you spout authorities to back up your arguments,
Proving what cannot be Proved to keep your Mind Occupied.
Not knowing that the Country of your Body Mind Soul will soon be completely
Occupied by the Fascists you invited in.
And Still…

— All is food for you.

You are surrounded by friends or alone —
— All is food for you.
You are naked or adorned —
— All is food for you.

SOMETHING IS ALWAYS
AT STAKE
SOMETHING IS ALWAYS
ON THE LINE.

You strut around

proudly depressed of the misery
you have caused yourself.
You will do anything to preserve the misery.
You will fight,
you will sneer,
you will accuse,
you will blame,
you will steal, you will hide,
—all to preserve fear!
REMEMBER
THERE IS ALWAYS
SOMETHING
AT STAKE.
THAT SOMETHING IS YOU.

nothing can satiate

wealth can not
fame can not
love can not
power can not
friends can not
ONLY ∞

AFTER YOU HAVE IT ALL, THEN WHAT?

victories feed you

your failures feed you
your past feeds you
your ideas feed you

if your friends allow you to be complacent,

accept or like you that is food for you.
If they hate you, that is food for you.
WHY ARE YOU SO HUNGRY?
Does death not even inspire your appetite?
Do you know death?
Or do you just have snapshots of it?
You act like you are immune from it,
that it just happens all around you
— but not to you.
Not even your own death can shudder you
move you from your — feeding frenzy.
As long as you can EAT, your death seems far, far away.

WHAT FOOD IS NEXT?

Misery is food,
and you can find plenty of that.
You are never at a loss for that.

You never learn

because MISERY is food.
You repeat the same mistake,
the same mistake, the same misery
over and over.
Worst of all
you repeat your misery with pride,
with your sneer of superiority,
WITH A SENSE OF NEWNESS,
with a sense of uniqueness,
with a sense of choice,
or with a sense of helplessness.

Yet, it is the same mistake,

the same misery.

You do not even dare find a NEW MISTAKE,

A NEW MISERY

since that might wake you up from your

FEEDING FRENZY
EXERCISE
In the beginning was the Word…
Words, whether thought or spoken, are immensely powerful. The first step to
awareness is to notice the words you use. When you speak to others, pay attention
to your language, particularly automatic phrases. (For example, when a colleague
asks you how you are, note that you automatically reply “fine” or “life sucks” or
whatever your automatic reply is.) As you begin to watch your language, you might
notice that much of what you say is habit. You’re still speaking and thinking in the
same manner as you were years ago! Repetitive or automatic speaking are
indications that you are sound asleep, even if you believe that you are having a
conversation. Each time you repeat these habitual phrases, you reaffirm the self that
you’re comfortable with, the self that feels safe, even if this self is miserable. This
is the self that is chained by the past.

DO THIS NOW!
Write down the patterns and phrases which you use most often. Then begin to
become aware of HOW MANY TIMES you use these same phrases as if you
were a programmed voice on a customer service phone system. (We assume that
you have experienced the frustration of communicating with automatic telephone
responses.) Have you ever wondered why you use these dead phrases over and
over again? Why are they so dear to you?

Once you have made a list of the phrases, count the number of times you use them
in a three-day period—you’ll probably be amazed—and then:

STOP

STOP

STOP

STOP
Stay Awake
and each time you prepare to repeat
this DEAD WORD, this DEATH KNELL - - -

STOP

Say Stop to yourself.

Each time this stammered crippled phrase
rears Its Frightened head

STOP

BE SILENT.
Then, if you truly desire to know who and what you are,

REPLACE those DEAD PHRASES with Silence

Or… (while you practice)

SILENTLY TELL YOURSELF TO:
WAKE — UP !
Bursting the Bubble of Perception
And even now the time seems remote when artistic energies and the practical wisdom of life will
join with scientific thinking to form a higher organic system in relation to which scholars,
physicians, artists and legislators—as we know them at present—would have to look like paltry
relics of ancient times.
— Friedrich Nietzsche, The Gay Science, 1887

The peculiar human need to give meaning to life—to justify existence—to find God—to
understand immediately—melts away at the moment of grand insight.
— C.S. Hyatt, Ph.D., 1993
Part I
Where Am I Going and How Will I
Know I’ve Arrived When I Make
It There?
“It’s the End of the World As You
Know It”
The evolutionary progression of the last 3000 years has been aimed toward the
development of the autonomous individual.
We humans worked hard to separate ourselves from the very Nature from which
we were begotten. In fact, over the years, we have become so accustomed to being
separated from Nature that we have forgotten our authentic Selves.
However, many physicists, such as Brianne Swimm and Fred Alan Wolf, are
proposing that humans are now claiming a “cosmic” connection—a connection that
is based on the sensing of a point (usually felt in the heart) that connects us all.
Cosmic kinship does not mean that we are regressing into archaic consciousness,
but rather that we are progressing onto a wholly new path: a true relationship with
Nature, both outward and inward.
A new door of perception has been opened.
Humans are entering into a new state of being, one which allows us to become
artists of the world and, simultaneously, the artists of our Selves.
This is unlike our prior relationship with Nature, in which we lived according to
what Nature bestowed upon us. Then we rose to a state of dominion over Nature—
separating ourselves from Nature with the goal to conquer it. A cosmic-oriented
human acts as a Co-Creator of the world. We merge with that which created
nature and become attuned to creation itself. We begin to bestow on Nature
(including our fellow humans) what we were previously only able to receive!
This is an amazing evolution! Where once we were prone to conform Nature to
our (mostly false) definitions of ourselves, now Nature—or, our given environment
—becomes a reflection of ourselves while we simultaneously reflect our
environment.
Our environment has ceased to be Other. It has become, to borrow a
technological term, interactive—with neither humans nor Nature having a position
of superiority.
This means that we must become responsible to Nature. For if 90% of humans
cling to the idea of being superior to Nature and continue to perceive Nature as
Other, the road to enlightenment will become long and fraught with suffering. This
long road might feel “normal” because it seems familiar. And some will cling to
misery because it’s familiar and, therefore, safe.

Wouldn’t you rather correct yourself quickly and live joyfully in the present than
wait until evolution kicks you into the gutter? Or until you’re dead? Or reincarnated
into an even more hellish world?
One way or another, this CHANGE WILL OCCUR!
It is your choice to speed up your evolution and live in peace and joy sooner, or
cling to your old habits and suffer until someone else does the work.
Keep in mind that evolving into a New Person does not mean that we must
forfeit our individuality. It does not mean you must think or do as others who are
evolving. Quite the contrary, it means evolving into your unique potential!
Indeed, as many a cyberpunk prophet has attested, we may be moving towards a
world wherein an independent external reality becomes a myth and virtual reality is
the field upon which we play. And playing is fun!
It is also interesting to note that post-structural philosophers such as Foucault,
Derrida and Deleuze posit a similar view of the world and Self.
The metaphysical structure upon which the Western World is founded is
dissolving. Aristotelian-Platonic ideas—which presuppose a perfect and constant
reality hiding behind the curtain of the temporal world—don’t hold up to the
scrutinizing eye of either modern philosophy or physics. Consequently, we are left
with a reality which is mutable and deliciously mysterious.
Living in a world where change is the only constant seems frightening and often
evokes feelings of insecurity, yet it also presents us with unlimited opportunity. A
lack of constancy allows an infinite field of raw substance which we can mold—if
we so choose.
And while science now is proving that change is the only constant, thousands of
years ago, in the Parinirvana Sutra, Buddha wrote:
O bhikshus! Do not grieve! Even if I were to live in the world for as long as a kalpa, our coming
together would have to end.
You should know that all things in the world are impermanent; coming together inevitably
means parting. Do not be troubled, for this is the nature of life.
Diligently practicing right effort, you must seek liberation immediately. Within the light of
wisdom, destroy the darkness of ignorance. Nothing is secure. Everything in this life is
precarious.
Always wholeheartedly seek the way of liberation. All things in the world, whether moving or
non-moving, are characterized by disappearance and instability.
Stop now! Do not speak! Time is passing. I am about to cross over.
This is my final teaching.

Robert Anton Wilson noted that there are more enlightened people living today
than there were in Buddha’s time. He calls this evolution the “Jumping Jesus

each decade passes, the number of enlightened humans increases exponentially. But

iWaiu?. ROBERT w. VAN KIRK, MINISTER November 22, 1910 Dr. J.
Lawrence Hill, Jackson, Mich. My Dear Sir: Your letter and the
printed matter concerning your treatment of Consumption and other
diseases came to hand in due time and I have examined them
carefully. You say if I am not satisfied to have you continue .the use
of my name that you will cheerfully comply with my request to
discontinue it. I am therefore writing you to ask that you do not use
my endorsement any further. I did not suppose my name would be
used in any such manner when I gave you my note of
commendation of character. I am made to practically endorse your
remedies, which I cannot do, inasmuch as I know nothing of them.
It seems to me that you have abused the confidence of your friends
and have tried to make merchandise of their good name. I never
would have given my name to be used in the exploitation of a mail-
order business such as you are conducting. Your methods are
exactly like those of the faker and quack, and even though they
should have virtues, they are at once discredited in the eyes of
sensible and honest people by your methods of advertising and your
appeals to the afflicted. The testimonial ; are not convincing and
they bear the ear-marks of ignorant and gullible people. Your letters
to sick peop'e would be exceedingly offensive to oersons of good
taste and sense because of the ingratiating character of these
letters. When you or any other man claims to cure consumption he
lays himself < pen to grave suspicions as to his honesty and
truthfulness. It seems to me that if your remedies and treatment are
all that you claim for them, you would not be obliged to exploit them
in the same way that quacks are employing to foist their nostrums
upon unfortunate victims of disease, but that they would commend
themselves to the medical profession in such a way as to claim
recognition and general use. If you can do all you claim to do, you
ought to have the recognition and honor that have come to Pasteur,
Koch and Jenner. I cannot bring myself to believe that such
marvelous discoveries, which the world has been waiting for for
centuries, should not be hailed with enthusiasm and gratitude and
that their discoverer should not be exalted as a benefactor of the
human race. And what irony that your discoveries and inventions
should be obliged to go begging for recognition, and be compelled
to be classified with the panaceas of mercenary quacks and
conscienceless imposters! In conclusion I can only say that I regret
exceedingly that your methods and claims have made you fall from
that high position of respect in which you stood with your friends,
as- indicated by their letters of appreciation of your abilities. I wish
you were employing your gifts— and you certainly have them — in a
manner which would not subject you to such grave suspicions of
quackery. ,, Very truly yours, ROBERT W. VAN KIRK

12S QUACKERY We investigated some of the cases of

consumption in patients whom Hill claims, either directly or by
implication, to have cured. Space will not permit us to do more than
give very briefly the result of the inquiries. Following are the names
of individuals whose testimonials are given as samples of the "cures"
of consumption which Hill achieves: Frank Wachter, Lockport, III:
Died Sept. 6, 1908. The testimonial, however, was still doing duty in
the latter part of 1910! Nancy Toicnesly, flhawnee, Okla.: No one of
that name could be found. The city directories for the past six years
failed to show the name. Otto Bruce, Hartford, Wis.: Died March 5,
1909. Testimonial still used in the fall of 1910. Miss Young, South
Haven, Mich.: A South Haven physician writes: "In my opinion,
judging from my observations of her STOMACH SPECIALIST
Photographic reproduction (reduced) of the advertisements of some
of Hill's professional friends; these gentlemen testified to his sterling
worth. for the last ten years, she has never had tuberculosis. At all
times she has presented the appearance of a strong healthy girl."
Miss Ida Schultz, Amherst, Wis.: Died Aug. 21. 1909. The testimonial
still lives. Mrs. Mary Hawkins, Cleo, Okla.: A physician in Cleo writes:
"The only Mrs. Hawkins in this vicinity is said, by those who have
known her many years, to be a strong healthy woman, with no
suspicion of tuberculosis." HILL GROWS WARY So much for the
testimonials. Dr. Hill, within the past few months has grown wary.

testimonials prove boomerangs. He now, therefore, omits the names
and addresses on the testimonials sent out, but states that they "will
be given you on request." One of his latest sheets of testimonials
consists of answers to queries mailed to a number of his "patients."
The queries are alleged to have been sent by "an anxious seeker
after health," and were signed "F. L. C." Is it possible that Mr. F. L.
Childs, the vice-president and owner of nearly half of the stock in
the Hill concern and alleged proprietor of a Kalariiazoo "constipation
cure" is the "anxious seeker after health" — and testimonials? HILL'S
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Just a word in closing about J.
Lawrence Hill, A.M., D.D., M.D. He is a graduate of the Chicago
Homeopathic Medical College, 1894. In his advertisements he claims
to be a graduate of Edinburgh University, Scotland. Hill used to
practice in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Mich. In February, 1896, he
filed his physician's certificate, as the law requires, with the county
clerk of Calhoun County, and, according to the court records, he at
that time stated under oath that he was "a graduate of Edinburgh
Medical College, Scotland." Inquiry made of the authorities of the
University of Edinburgh brought the following reply from the
registrar of the university : "The name J. Lawrence Hill does not
appear in any of our lists of graduates, but we find the following
entries in Matriculation Records (a search having been made for the
period 1856 to 1894) : " '1877-8 John Lawrence Hill, Pontypool, age
26, Arts 1st.' "'1878-9 J. L. Hill, Edinburgh, age 27, Arts 2nd.' "No
other entry appears which gives the slightest indication of bearing
on the case." Which is correct? Hill's statement or the registrar's? If
the latter, does it place Hill in the serious position of having
committed perjury? In any case it seems to be a matter into which
the Michigan authorities may well look. CONCLUSIONS To sum up:
What does this investigation of the Hill "consumption cure" show?
First: The Hill consumption cure is chiefly owned and controlled by
men whose only qualification for treating disease is that they are
business men financially interested in other medical fakes. Second:
The claims made in the advertisements, either directly or by
implication, that the Hill remedies will "cure" consumption are cruel
and heartless falsehoods.

CONSUMPTION CURES 131 Third: The methods employed

to capture victims, by means of speciously worded circular letters
disguised as personal communications, are an imposition, if not an
actual fraud, on the ignorant or credulous. Fourth: The drugs sent
out by Hill as a "trial treatment" are worthless as a cure for
consumption. Fifth: In printing endorsements of himself, which Hill
received from ministers of the gospel, he grossly abused the
confidence of men who did not know the use to which their letters
were to be put. Sixth: The testimonials from physicians which Hill
publishes have been shown to emanate in some cases from men
who themselves are employed in exploiting medical fakes. Seventh:
The claim Hill makes of being a graduate of Edinburgh University has
been shown to be as false as the claims made for the nostrum he
exploits. Can a much more disgraceful business than the various
"consumption cure" humbugs be imagined? Founded on fraud,
maintained by deceit, perpetuated by falsehood — the sick are
exploited to pay dividends on corporate quackery. How much longer
will this outrage on the unfortunate victims of the White Plague be
tolerated? If not for humanitarian reasons, then for its own
protection, at least, society should demand that such cruel frauds be
suppressed. Their existence is a menace to public health and a
disgrace to modern civilization. (From The Journal A. M. A., Jan. Vh
1911.) NATURE'S CREATION Whatever may be said of the morality
of nostrum exploitation it must be admitted that it shows no lack of
business perspicacity. Should an epidemic of yellow fever sweep over
the country, "patent medicines" which have previously been
advertised as "cures" for a variety of conditions are immediately
heralded either as specifics for, or as unfailing prophylactics against,
this scourge. Should influenza be prevalent, the quack remedy that
has previously been sold as a colic or rheumatism "specific" is
advertised as the one and only reliable cure for la grippe. So, too,
when the attention of the public is focussed on certain diseases, the
"patent medicine" makers are the first to recognize the commercial
potentialities of playing on popular interest. This is. well illustrated
by the innumerable "consumption cures" that have appeared during
the last year or two — since, in fact, the institution of an active
campaign against tuberculosis. THEN AN "ABSOLUTE CUBE" FOR
SYPHILIS An example of the way in which even the merest pretense
of scientific consistency is sacrificed by nostrum mongers for

found in a "patent medicine" now emanating from Columbus, Ohio,
called "Nature's Creation." This nostrum was at one time exploited in
Chicago as an "absolute cure" for syphilis — or "blood poison."
Under the caption "Nature's Creation vs. Mercury and Potash" this
"cure" was foisted on the public and the ignorant were told that
"Nature's Creation and Antitoxin are the only Real specifics
discovered in recent years." The syphilitic was warned against taking
"mercury and potash" and was told that "it is much better to let the
disease run with no treatment at all than to suppress it with mercury
and potash." The viciousness of such doctrine is only equaled by the
effrontery which becomes evident when the results of the analysis of
this nostrum are considered. "Marvelous Cures" were reported, the
records of which were "made under the personal supervision of one
of Chicago's most prominent physicians ! " NOW A CONSUMPTION
CURE As the public became more and more interested in the subject
of tuberculosis it apparently was decided that there was more
money to be made out of a tuberculous clientele than out of
syphilitic patrons: exit the "blood poison" cure; enter the
consumption specific. USUAL NOSTRUM CLAIMS The claims made
for "Nature's Creation" make its classification easy: Genus,
"nostrum;" species, "consumption cure;" variety, "mysterious
unknown plant." As to what it is said to be: "Nature's Creation is a
secret remedy . . " "Is made entirely from vegetable matter ..."
"Contains everything beneficial and nothing harmful." "It is a
complex vegetable compound, cannot be analyzed." "Comprised of
vegetable matter containing at least one ingredient that the medical
world knows nothing about — it is the one that gives the greatest
value, and no chemist has ever been able to determine what it is."
But what it is said to be, pales into insignificance when compared
with what it was claimed to do: "Creates an appetite." "Strengthens
the heart." "Reduces the temperature." "Developes atropied cell
tissues." "Stops night sweats and hemorrhages." "Renovates and
builds up the entire system." "Checks at once further progress of the
disease." "Positively strengthens and restores the leucocytes."
TESTIMONIALS No enterprising exploiter of nostrums, whether of
the "ethical proprietary" or of the "patent medicine" type, need
experience any difficulty in obtaining testimonials. As has

testimonials are about the least expensive part of the stock-in-trade
of the nostrum vender. A free bottle or two of the preparation, an
order on a local photographer for a dozen photographs, a refund of
a portion of the blood-money collected by the exploiter, the not
uncommon weakness of the unintelligent to desire to see their name
and picture set forth in all the glory of printer's ink or even in some
few cases an honest belief in the efficacy of the nostrum — all
furnish easy and not costly means of obtaining favorable comment
on any "patent medicine" however worthless or vicious. That the
virtues of "Nature's Creation" are extolled via the testimonial route
goes without saying; that the testimonials differ in no essential

some of the replies that have been received. "In regard to 'Nature's
Creation' and Miss 's connection with same, I would state that she
did not have consumption at all ... When gets a cold and coughs the
least bit she thinks she has consumption, and it was during such a
spell as this that she commenced to take the fake remedy. I have
treated the family and I know positively that anything else would
have worked similarly." The Miss here referred to was advertised as
one of those people "whose recoveries have been most wonderful."
The physician who wrote the above also had this to say of an
individual whose case is not advertised: "There was Mrs. here who
really had tuberculosis and came into my hands after spending a
great deal of money trying the nostrum and drifting into the last
stage. She rapidly got worse all the time she took it and died a short
time after I first saw her." Another physician who was written to
concerning another "wonderful recovery" said: "As regards and
'Nature's Creation' . . . she is not my patient. ... I only attended one
patient who took the wonderful remedy and she praised it up for
several weeks and at the end of that time passed from the sphere of
'Nature's Creation' into the presence of the Creator." Another quoting
a fellow practitioner who had last treato.l one of the marvelous
"cures:" "Dr. A. says . . . that is no better than he was before taking
the nostrum and, in Dr. A.'s opinon, had no tuberculosis, anyhow!"
Of one patient whose testimonial was given much publicity two years
ago, a Colorado physician writes: "She has been benefited by the
change to this climate but she is not cured and the benefit she has is
attributable to Colorado sunshine. Further, she refused to allow this
nostrum to use her name in their literature." SOME PECULIAR
COINCIDENCES . One letter of inquiry was written direct from THE
JOURNAL office to an individual living near Columbus, Ohio, whose
portrait appeared among other testimonial givers. The reply in itself
was amusing, breathing injured innocence and restrained
indignation; but some coincidences of a mechanical nature made it
even more amusing. Coincidence 1 : The letter was typewritten on a
plain sheet of paper that bore a certain watermark; the same
watermark is found in the Nature's Creation Co.'s stationery!
The text on this page is estimated to be only 28.42%
accurate

CONSUMPTION CURES 135 Coincidence 2: The machine on

which the letter was typewritten had two characters out of
alignment; the same two characters show the same lack of
alignment in a communication sent out by Nature's Creation
Company on its official stationery! Coincidence 3: The degree of
indentation of the first line of each paragraph was unusual; the
same peculiarity is to be found in a letter emanating from the office
of the nostrum company ! Coincidence 4: The "reply" was dated five
days later than the letter of inquiry; this is about the time that would
be consumed if the testimonial-giver sent THE JOURNAL'S letter to
Columbus and awaited a reply! Under the circumstances, it is
difficult to avoid the suspicion that the "reply" to THE JOURNAL'S
letter originated in the office of "Nature's Creation" and was merely
signed and mailed by the individual who gave the testimonial. WHAT
OUR CHEMISTS FOUND Laboratory Report: An original, sealed bottle
of "Nature's Creation" was obtained direct from the Nature's Creation
Company, Columbus, Ohio, and was submitted to the Association
laboratory for chemical examination. The bottle wras labeled back
and front and was wrapped in a circular containing directions for
using the preparation. On the front label was pictured in colors a
rocky landscape and waterfall over which the words "The Nature's
Creation Co.'s Discovery" were printed in red. A facsimile signature,
"Mrs. J. M. Reynolds (originator)" was printed across the lower part
of the label, which also bore the serial number "16050 B." and
declared the presence of 6 per cent, alcohol. The label on the other
side of the bottle contained directions for using the preparation.
"Nature's Creation" is a dark, brown liquid having a sassafras-like
odor and a salty, licorice-like taste. Qualitative tests show the
presence of iodid, potassium, sodium, vegetable extractive —
including some preparation of licorice — and small quantities of
sulphates, phosphates, calcium and iron. Appropriate tests indicate
the absence of potent alkaloids, salicylates, benzoates, cinnamates,
and phenols such as creosote and guaiacol. Quantitative estimations
of potassium and iodid indicated that these constituents are present
in the form of potassium iodid, equal approximately to 6.00 grams in
100 c.c. of the preparation. Estimation of sulphate and phosphate
indicated that these radicles are probably present in combination
with small quantities of sodium, calcium and the potassium not
present as iodid. These salts are present in quantities too small to
have any therapeutic effects. The examination indicates that
"Nature's Creation" is essentially a solution of potassium iodid in a

extractives and flavoring matter and small quantities of inorganic
salts. From the analysis given it seems, therefore, that the main
medicinal ingredient • of this "complex vegetable compound" which
"cannot be analyzed" is potassium iodid. These findings are not
surprising when what has been said about the earlier exploitation of
"Nature's Creation" as a remedy for syphilis — a substitute for the
"potash" treatment! — is borne in mind. REVERSING THE USUAL
ORDER Many nostrums now on the market were originally exploited
to the medical profession as "ethical proprietaries" and after
receiving the necessary quota of testimonials from unthinking
physicians were boldly launched as "patent medicines," pure and
simple. The "consumption cure" of J. Q. Lloyd of St. Tuberculosis or

reversing the usual order. Originally sold direct to the laity, first for
syphilis and now for tuberculosis, exploited by means of newspaper
advertisements that are probably without a parallel in their
villification of the medical profession, the promoters of this nostrum
have the consummate impudence to attempt to foist their
"vegetable" mixture of dilute alcohol and potassium iodid on
physicians. The Buffalo, N. Y., headquarters of "Nature's Creation"
are known as the "Therapeutic Co., inc.," with a Dr. W. H. Baker as
its "consulting physician and a director of its affairs." Dr. Baker

Toxine is with Dyptlieria." (Spelling and composition as in original).
The "literature" sent out to physicians by the "Therapeutic Co., inc."
differs but little from that sent to the laity. The medical profession is
given a few enlightening, fundamental facts regarding the
composition of the blood — though these facts are known to every
school-boy who has reached the seventh grade. There is, however,
one important omission in the advertising that goes to physicians,
but which appears in that sent to the laity. Here it is: "Nature's
Creation is a secret remedy and as It is a complex vegetable
compound carinot be analyzed. This Js why the medical profession
has not the same medicine." With this exception there is practically
no difference between the "lay" and "professional" advertising. The
"consulting physician" encloses with his own letter to the medical
men a facsimile letter from Dr. Arthur W. K. Downes, a homeopathic
physician of Chicago, who states that "you need have no hesitancy
in using this medicine in any and all cases of consumption. . . ." In
answer to a letter addressed to the "consulting physician," asking for
the formula of "Nature's Creation" the secretary of the company
wrote: "It will be impossible for us to forward to you the formula of
the remedy, known as 'Nature's Creation,' as we do not possess the
same." CONCLUSION This nostrum is so typical of its class, its
method of exploitation so characteristic of the innumerable "cures"
that flood the market that in closing we can do no better than quote
Mr. Adams in the "Great American Fraud:" "Our national quality of
commercial shrewdness fails us when we go into the open market to
purchase relief from suffering. The average American when he sets
out to buy a horse, or a box of cigars, is a model of caution. Show
him testimonials from any number of prominent citizens and he
would simply scoff. . . . Now observe the same citizen seeking to buy
the most precious of all possessions, sound health. Anybody's word
is good enough for him here. An admiral whose puerile vanity has
betrayed him into a testimonial; an obliging and conscienceless
senator; a grateful idiot from some remote hamlet; a renegade
doctor or a silly woman who gets a bonus of a dozen photographs
for her letter — any of these are sufficient to lure the hopeful patient
to the purchase. He wouldn't buy a second-hand bicycle on the
affidavit of any of them, but he will give up his dollar and take his
chance of poison on a mere newspaper statement which he doesn't
even investigate." And of the value of printer's ink as an asset to the
exploiter of "patent medicine:" "Take from the nostrum venders the
