ANNEE ACADEMIQUE/ACADEMIC YEAR: 2018/19
DEPARTEMENT/DEPARTMENT: N/A CLASSE/CLASS: MEng 2
COMPOSITION DE FIN DE SEMESTRE/END OF SEMESTER EXAMINATION:
EPREUVE/COURSE TITLE: Résistance des Matériaux – Part B CODE/CODE: RDM 212
DATE/DATE: 07/08/2019 DUREE/DURATION: 3 hours
EXAMINATEUR/EXAMINER: BEATRICE POMARO
INSTRUCTION/INSTRUCTIONS: Books, notes and mobile phones are not allowed. Any communication between the candidates is
forbidden. The Exam consists of 3 exercises and 3 multiple choice questions.
The candidate has to:
- solve in the answer booklet the exercises;
- answer in the booklet the multiple choice questions (good answer: full credit; bad or no answer: no credit).
1) Given the following structure,
a) identify the equivalent isostatic system, define the congruence equation and write the solving equation (use the
Theorem of Virtual Work OR the kinematic method);
b) compute the hyperstatic unknown.
L= 3m
P = 3 kN
k = 4 ∙ 102 kNm
EI = 2 ∙ 104 kNm2
EA → ∞
2) Given the following frame system, plot the deflected structure for axial compression loads in the booklet and
define the Euler’s critical load for the structure:

3) Consider the following structure subjected to point-forces P and F belonging to the centroidal plane (y, z) of the
structure. The structure has homogeneous thin-walled cross-section with geometry and orientation as reported in
the figure on the right,
a) define the actions on section S, given its geometry and orientation as in figure;
b) define the stress state on the section (complete diagram of normal stress components σz and shear stress
components τzx, τzy);
c) define if the stress state of point Q belonging to section S satisfies von Mises strength criterion.
L= 3m
P = 10 kN
F = 2 kN
A = 2000 mm2
Ix = 1416667 mm4
Iy = 466666.7 mm4
G = (20, 40) mm from (X’, Y’)
CT = (-12.51, 40) mm from (X’, Y’)
MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS
A) The invariants of the stress tensor:
a) do not vary at varying reference system;
b) take different values at varying reference system;
c) coincide with the invariants of the strain tensor.
B) The neutral axis in biaxial bending:
a) never cuts the section;
b) is a line passing through the centroid of the section;
c) is a line tangent to the section.
C) The nucleus of inertia:
a) is always a polygon;
b) is the region containing all the centers of pressures for which the section undergoes compression and tension
in some points;
c) is the region containing all the centers of pressures for which the section undergoes biaxial bending.
