Polygons Notes

The document provides definitions and classifications of polygons, specifically focusing on triangles and quadrilaterals. It outlines types of triangles based on angle measures (acute, right, obtuse) and side lengths (equilateral, isosceles, scalene), as well as characteristics of quadrilaterals like trapezoids and parallelograms. Additionally, it includes exercises for classifying triangles and quadrilaterals.

Polygons Kinds of Triangles According to Angle Measure

Polygon - a closed plane figure whose sides are segments. 1. Acute Triangle – A triangle with three acute interior angles.
Tri – a prefix which means “three” Illustration:
Triangle - a three sided polygon . Acute angles:
- The sum of its interior angle is equal to 180°. Angle A, Angle B and Angle C
vertex - a corner point.
- It is the intersection point of two sides of a
polygon.
2. Right Triangle – a triangle with a right angle (90°).
- It is a point where two sides meet.
Illustration:
- a symbol which is read as triangle.
- tick symbol
- a symbol use to indicate equal or congruent sides of a polygon
Kinds of Triangles According to Length of each Side
1. Equilateral Triangle – a triangle where all sides are of equal
In a right triangle, take note of the following:
length.
o The longest side is called hypothenuse and it is opposite
Illustration:
the right angle.
o The hypothenuse in the given figure is side AC
AB = BC = AC o The two shorter sides are called legs. The legs are sides
AB and BC
o The angles opposite the legs are acute angles.
2. Isosceles Triangle - a triangle with two sides of equal length. 3. Obtuse Triangle – a triangle with one obtuse angle.
Illustration Illustration:
OD = OC
OD and OC are called “legs” The obtuse angle in ABC is angle
CD is the base B/Angle ABC/Angle CBA
Quadrilaterals
Vertex Angle – The angle opposite the base. Quadrilateral – a four sided polygon
Base Angles – The angles opposite the legs - has four vertices and four angles.
3. Scalene Triangle – a triangle where all sides are of different - can be named using its vertices in a clockwise or
lengths.
counter clockwise direction starting from any
Illustration:
vertex.
AB ≠ AC ≠ BC - sum of the interior angles is equal to 360°
Diagonal - a segment joining two opposite vertices of a
polygon.
- It divides a quadrilateral into two triangles.
