REFLECTION

Today, we talked about social science, which is all about understanding how people
behave and how it affects our world. Imagine it’s like looking at how we all act and why
we do the things we do in society.
The main goal of social science Is to help us figure out the problems and questions
about our society and how we can make it better. It’s like trying to solve puzzles about
how people and society work.
Social science is important because it teaches us not only why we act the way we do
but also how to understand others and get along with them. It’s like a toolkit for
understanding people and society.
There are different parts of social science, like anthropology (studying what makes us
human), economics (how money and things are used), geography (learning about
places and the environment), and many more. These all help us understand different
aspects of society.
And there’s a practical side called applied social science, which uses all this knowledge
to make real-life improvements. It’s like using what we know to make our lives better,
whether it’s in how we communicate, help others, or work on our mental health and
well-being. So, social science is like a guide to making our world a nicer place.
Social science and applied social science

Social science, in its theoretical and applied forms, serves as a lens through which we
examine the intricate tapestry of human existence. It encompasses a wide array of
disciplines, each offering unique perspectives on human behavior, society, and the
world we inhabit. In its theoretical form, social science delves into the depths of human
consciousness, cultural norms, historical trends, and the myriad forces that shape our
interactions. It’s a pursuit driven by curiosity and a quest for knowledge, seeking to
uncover the underlying principles that govern our actions and societies.
However, the true essence of social science emerges when it is applied to real-world
challenges. Applied social science takes this knowledge and transforms it into practical
solutions, policy recommendations, and innovations that address the pressing issues of
our time. Applied social science is the bridge between theory and action. It’s the
economist crafting policies to alleviate poverty, the psychologist developing therapies
for mental health, the anthropologist fostering cross-cultural understanding, and the
political scientist shaping governance. It’s the data-driven models predicting social
trends and the social entrepreneurs pioneering solutions to societal problems. What
makes applied social science so compelling is its tangible impact. It’s not confined to the
pages of academic journals; it’s in the policies that reduce inequality, the programs that
improve education, the businesses that tackle environmental challenges, and the
humanitarian efforts that bring aid to those in need.
In reflection, social science, in all its forms, is a testament to our quest for
understanding and our capacity for change. It reminds us that knowledge, when wielded
with purpose, has the power to shape societies, improve lives, and navigate the
complexities of our human existence. It’s a dynamic field that evolves with our ever-
changing world, continually offering insights and solutions to make our societies more
equitable, informed, and resilient
