LESSON PROPER

REGULATORY SIGNS
Stop Sign (Reflectorized white legend and border; used to ensure caution before entering an intersection
Reflectorized red background. Octagon)
 Stop sign is necessary for safety. It is intended to ensure the drivers have sufficient time which to
assess the degree of hazard prevailing before entering an intersection. STOP signs.

STANDARD APPLICATION OF TRAFFIC SIGN

 It should fulfill a need.
 It should command attention traffic control devices should compel attention because if the road
user is not compelled, any device becomes valueless regardless of its other qualities.
 It should clearly a simple message.
 It should be so located that a motorist would have time to respond to its message.
 It should command respect.

UNIFORMITY OF DESIGN
 Uniformity in the design of sign facilities identification by the road users’ standardization of shape,
color and message is important to that various classes of signs can easily be recognized.

The following general design principles have evolved:

 The driver should not be unduly distracted from his task of driving by reading a traffic signs.
A traffic sign should be perceived and understood by the driver traveling at the 85 percent speed of the
traffic on the road, in sufficient time for safely take any time action necessary.

STANDARDS ADOPTED BY THE INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS:

 Octagon - is reserved exclusively for the Stop sign.
 Equilateral triangle with one point vertically downward - is reserved for the Give way sign.
 Circle - is used for regulatory signs. The circle symbol may sometimes be mounted on a regular
base either for easy recognition or for additional information.
 Equilateral triangle with one point vertically upward - is used for warning signs.
 Rectangle - usually with long axis horizontal is used for directional signs, signs for road works and
special purposes and supplementary plates to warning signs.
 The Rectangle - usually with long axis vertical is used for facility information signs, and destination
of point of interest.
The standard colors for signs are as follows:
 Red - is used as a background for STOP signs, as border color on GIVE WAY signs, warning sign
and prohibitive signs in the regulatory series.
 Black - is used background color for signs having a white, yellow, yellow-orange background, and
as background color for hazard markers.
 Yellow - is used as background color for warning signs, advisory speed signs and for most road
work signs whose legends relate to personnel working.
 Green - is used as background color for most direction signs and legends for parking signs.
 Blue - is used as facility information signs and to indicate point of interest.

UNIFORMITY OF LOCATION
 Signs are normally erected on the right side of the thoroughfares. In special circumstances, signs
are specified. Signs maybe duplicated on the left side or mounted over the thoroughfare. The
longitudinal placement of certain signs is fixed by the nature of their message or their characteristic
use. Special care required in the sitting of each signs to ensure that they are prominently displayed
to approaching drivers.
 Signs which give advance, warning information should be located sufficiently in advance to enable
the driver to react appropriately.
 Only one sign for on each post, except supplementing signs and route or directional signs that
must be grouped. Signs should be located 0.6 meters apart when conveying 2 or more different
messages at one location.

REQUIREMENTS IN INSTALLATION OF DEVICES

 Must compel attention.
 Convey a clean concise meaning at a glance.
 Allow adequate response time.
 Command report of the road users.

LATERAL PLACEMENT AND HEIGHT IN ROADS

1. Un-curbed rural/urban roads- min of 600mm clearance from outer edge of the roadshoulder, line of guide
post or face of guardrail and min clearance of 2m and max of 4m from the edge of the travel way.
2. Curbed urban roads-should be located with a minimum of 300mm and a max of 1m from the face of the
curb. Minimum clearance when mountable or semi-mountable curbs are used -500mm.
3. Height of sign on rural roads is generally 1.-1.5mabove the nearest pavement edge of the traveled way
and should be increase to 2m for finger boards and intersection direction sign.
4. Curbed urban roads - min height of 2mabove the top of the curbed. These are signs overhanging a
footway- 2.5m.
5. Overhead signs should be mounted at a minimum of 5.5mfrom the highest level of carriageway: may be
reduced to 4.7m if the sign projects over a shoulder.

INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC SIGNS

A. Danger warning signs
 Are intended to warn road users of a danger on the road and to inform them of its nature.
 Shape: Equilateral, Triangular with one side horizontal
 Color: Red
Examples: CAUTION: School Zone, CAUTION: Road Narrows Ahead

DRIVER'S SIGNALS
 The law requires every driver to signal to the other driver when planning to turn left or right, slow
down or stop, to change from one lane to another, to leave the roadway or to move out from a
parked position.
PROPER LANE - LEFT TURN
 Vehicles making a left turn should be in the lane to the right of the center of the road. Vehicles
making a left at an intersection should wait for a green, move with caution into the intersection and

when all on-coming traffic has cleared the intersection, complete the left turn.
PROPER LANE - RIGHT TURN
 Drive in the lane at the right edge of the roadway before making turn, unless signs or markings
indicate otherwise.
MAKING A STOP
 Slow down and give the proper light or arm signal. Lightly tap pedal to slow down and signal with
brake lights as a warning. Signals maybe given by the hand-and-arm position or by brake or signal
lights.
 If vehicle is built so that hand-and-arm signals be easily be seen, signal lights must be used.
 Signals your left or right turn during at least the last 100 feet before reaching the turning point, at
highway speed it is best to signal at least five seconds before you change lane.
 Check that you have safe clearance to the side, ahead and behind your vehicles, in addition to
giving proper signals. Watch for signals from other drivers.
PEDESTRIAN SIGNALS
 A pedestrian facing the green walk signal may proceed across the roadway in the direction of the
signal.
 A pedestrian facing a steady flashing "Don't Walk" signals should not start to cross the roadway.
 If pedestrian has entered the roadway on the Walk signal and the "Don't Walk" signal appears,
he/she proceed as quickly as possible to a safe area.

TRAFFIC SIGNALS

TRAFFIC LIGHTS

RED SIGNAL

 Unless a sign indicates otherwise, a right turn may be made on a red signal or from a one-way
street to a one-way street provided the vehicle is first brought to a stop, and always subject to the
right of way of pedestrians and other traffic.

FLASHING RED SIGNAL

 Means bring your vehicle to a stop and proceed only when it is safe to do so.

FLASHING RED BEACON

 The flashing red signal maybe an overhead beacon used conjunction with a stop sign, or a beacon
located directly above a stop sign.

YELLOW SIGNAL

 Do not always insist on others going ahead of you, the slowing and stopping may delay the flow of
traffic.

Three important points to remember in passing:

1. It is illegal to speed up when being passed. Continue at the same speed or reduce your speed.
2. Help another driver to pass safely. Move to the right side on your lane to give the other driver more
room and a better view ahead.
3. Show the passing driver the same courtesy that you would expect from other drivers.

WHEN NOT TO PASS ESPECIALLY ON ROADS MARKED BY SIGNS

1. At no-passing zone marked by signs or by solid yellow line-lanes or double-solid yellow lines which
indicate no passing.

2. On blind-curves where you would not be able to see oncoming cars. Always stay in your own lane on
any curve, out of the way of oncoming traffic.

3. on-going up a hill, passing is not allowed from 700 to 1,000 feet from the top or a hill.

4. At intersection or railroad crossings-where other vehicles or pedestrians may suddenly appear or unless
such intersection is controlled by traffic signal.

5. Near a bridge or underpass that may cut-off a read, shoulder. You or the car passing might need to use
the shoulder road in case emergency arises.

PASSING ON THE RIGHT IS PERMITTED ONLY

 When overtaking another vehicle making or about to make a left turn or signaling intent to make a
turn.
 On streets and highways marked for multi-lanes and, On one-way traffic streets

TURNING

1. Reduce speed in anticipation of making a turn.

2. Look behind and on both sides to see where other vehicles maybe before changing lanes, then
signal intention.
3. Move into the proper lane as soon as possible.

RIGHT TURN

 Turn into the right-hand lane when entering a roadway. Check traffic approaching from the left.
Follow the general curve of the curb while making the right turn. Stay as close as possible to the
curb.

LEFT TURN

 Point the wheels straight ahead until actually starting to turn. Complete the turn into any lane that is
lawfully open. Look behind for traffic and check for blind spot.
 When the way is clear, move into the left-hand lane keeping immediately to the right of the
centerline. Make left from right of the centerline. Make left from right of point where the centerline
meets the intersection Street.

STOPPING

 A driver of a motor vehicle is considered stopped when passengers and cargoes were loaded and
unloaded for about ten (10) minutes or more.

PARKING

 A driver of a motor vehicle is considered parked after a full stop on the shoulder of the road or in a
parking lot, leaving the vehicle with the engine and ignition stopped and hand brake on.

PLACE WHERE PARKING IS PROHIBITED

 Parking is prohibited on a highway in such a manner as to obstruct a sidewalk, a crosswalk, an

entrance to the highway to or from a private road or lane, on entrance-way for vehicles to pass.

BACKING

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN BACKING A CAR:

 When backing around a corner to the right or out from a driveway, check first for traffic and
pedestrian.
 Turn body to the right and put right arm over the back of the seat. Look at the back window as well as
the rear and front of the vehicle.
 While backing stay at the right side as much as possible. During maneuver made a quick traffic
checks on the front sides.
