Title: Rapunzel
Scene 1: The Garden
(The stage is set with a simple cottage on one side and a garden with a tall wall on the other.
The Husband enters, looking anxious.)
Wife: (offstage)
Husband! I’m craving that rampion again! I must have some, or I feel I’ll perish!
Husband:
(Desperate) Oh, what am I to do? My wife is with child, and she craves that rampion from the
enchantress’s garden. I have no choice!
(The Husband sneaks into the garden, cautiously picking some rampion. Suddenly, the
Enchantress appears.)
Enchantress:
Thief! How dare you steal from my garden!
Husband:
Please, forgive me! My wife, she’s with child and craves the rampion. I had no other choice!
Enchantress:
Very well. You may take as much rampion as you like... But in exchange, when your child is
born, you will give her to me.
Husband:
(In shock) No... please!
Enchantress:
It is done! Leave now, and remember my words.
(The Husband exits quickly, terrified. The Enchantress laughs darkly.)
Scene 2: The Tower
(Years have passed. The stage shows a tall tower with no doors, only a high window. The
Enchantress stands below, looking up. Enter Rapunzel, a young woman, at the tower window.)
Enchantress:
Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair, so that I may climb the golden stair.
(Rapunzel lets her long, golden hair down. The Enchantress climbs up. After a moment, she
climbs down again and exits. As Rapunzel is alone, she begins to sing.)
Rapunzel:
(Singing softly)
Oh, if only I were free from this tower...
(Enter Prince, wandering through the forest. He hears her singing and stops.)
Prince:
What is that beautiful voice? Where does it come from? (Looking up at the tower) There, in that
window! But how does one enter such a place?
(The Prince watches as the Enchantress returns.)
Enchantress:
Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!
(Rapunzel lets her hair down, and the Enchantress climbs up again. After a moment, the
Enchantress climbs down and exits. The Prince, amazed, steps forward.)
Prince:
I’ll try the same. (Clears throat) Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!
(Rapunzel, surprised but curious, lets down her hair. The Prince climbs up to her window.)
Rapunzel:
(Shocked) Who are you? You’re not the enchantress!
Prince:
I am a prince, drawn to your beautiful singing. I mean you no harm.
Rapunzel:
(Smiling) I’ve never met anyone like you before. How did you find me?
Prince:
Fate must have led me here. (Taking her hand) Will you let me visit you again?
Rapunzel:
Yes. Come to me each evening, and I will let down my hair.
(The two gaze at each other, in love. The Prince climbs down and exits.)
Scene 3: The Betrayal
(The Enchantress climbs up Rapunzel’s hair once again. This time, Rapunzel seems troubled.)
Rapunzel:
(Without thinking) Why is it that you are so much heavier to pull up than the prince?
(The Enchantress, furious, realizes what has been happening.)
Enchantress:
You foolish girl! How dare you betray me! You will pay for this!
(The Enchantress pulls out a pair of scissors and cuts Rapunzel’s hair. She drags Rapunzel
down from the tower.)
Enchantress:
Now you shall live in the wilderness, far from anyone who could ever love you!
(The Enchantress casts Rapunzel away and then holds the severed hair in her hand, preparing
for the Prince’s return.)
Scene 4: The Prince’s Fall
(The Prince arrives and calls up to the tower.)
Prince:
Rapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!
(The Enchantress lets down the cut hair. The Prince climbs up, but as he reaches the window, he
sees the Enchantress.)
Enchantress:
Foolish prince! You will never see Rapunzel again!
Prince:
(In despair) No!
(The Prince lets go and falls from the tower, landing in a patch of thorns. He covers his eyes in
pain.)
Prince:
(Sobbing) My eyes... I am blind!
(The Prince staggers off, lost and heartbroken.)
Scene 5: The Reunion
(Months have passed. The stage shows a wilderness scene. Rapunzel, now wearing simple
clothes, sits beside a stream, singing the same song. Enter the Prince, blind and wandering. He
hears her voice.)
Prince:
Could it be...? Rapunzel?
Rapunzel:
Prince! Is it truly you?
(They embrace, and Rapunzel sees his injured eyes. She cries.)
Rapunzel:
Oh, what has happened to you?
(Her tears fall onto his eyes, and miraculously, his vision is restored.)
Prince:
I can see again! Your love has saved me!
Rapunzel:
(With joy) We are together at last.
Prince:
Come with me to my kingdom, and we will live happily ever after.
(They exit hand in hand, smiling.)
