📄 Text Structure Passages

Read each passage below. Identify the text structure and signal words, and match it with the
correct graphic organizer.

Passage 1 –
Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world, rising over 29,000 feet above sea level. It
is covered with snow year-round and has steep, icy slopes. The air is thin, making it difficult
to breathe at high altitudes. Sherpas, skilled mountain guides, often help climbers reach the
summit.

Passage 2 –
To bake a cake, begin by preheating the oven to 350°F. Next, mix flour, sugar, eggs, and
butter in a bowl. Then, pour the batter into a pan. After that, place the pan in the oven and
bake for 30 minutes. Finally, remove the cake and let it cool before serving.

Passage 3 –
Birds and bats both fly through the air, but they are different in several ways. Birds have
feathers and beaks, while bats have fur and sharp teeth. Birds lay eggs; bats give birth to live
young. Despite their differences, both use wings to travel long distances.

Passage 4 –
Because plastic takes hundreds of years to break down, it builds up in the ocean. This
pollution harms sea animals, which may eat or get tangled in plastic. As a result, many
countries are banning plastic bags to reduce the damage.

Passage 5 –
Many children are not eating enough fruits and vegetables. This can lead to poor health and
low energy. One solution is to include fun, colorful fruit in meals and offer healthy snacks at
school. Educating children about healthy food choices can also help.
