IoT Based Surveillance Robot

Background and Present State of the Problem:

In domains including industrial safety, disaster management, and border security, remote
surveillance and monitoring in dangerous or inaccessible areas is becoming increasingly
important. Conventional surveillance systems lack environmental awareness, are frequently
static, and must be operated manually. These restrictions make emergency responses less
effective and put human operators at risk. It is now feasible to create intelligent robotic systems
with wireless communication, autonomous navigation, and real-time environmental monitoring
thanks to advancements in sensor technology and Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure. In
addition to lowering human danger, these devices increase the precision and speed of
situational evaluations.

Justification of the Study:

In order to create an autonomous mobile robot for remote surveillance, this research focusses
on integrating multi-modal sensors with Internet of Things communication. The suggested robot
can avoid obstructions, report data in real time, and detect environmental concerns like gas
leaks or fires. By utilising inexpensive, commercially accessible sensors and microcontrollers, the
system exhibits a modular and scalable approach to intelligent monitoring. By using this
technology, safety in high-risk areas can be greatly improved while environmental monitoring is
ongoing without requiring direct human intervention.

Objectives with Specific Aims:

➢ To create a mobile robot with sensors built in for navigation and environmental
monitoring.
➢ To use ultrasonic, gas, and flame sensors to implement hazard sensing and obstacle
detection.
➢ To set up wireless data transmission in real time using Internet of Things protocols (like
MQTT).
➢ To exhibit sensor fusion and programmed logic-based autonomous behaviour.
➢ To investigate the possibility of integrating sophisticated capabilities through modular
design.
Outline of Methodology:
The robot will make use of a number of proximity and environmental sensors that are interfaced
with a central controller, like as ESP32 or Raspberry Pi. The sensors will continuously gather
information about the environment, which will be processed in real time for navigation and
decision-making. Wi-Fi and the MQTT protocol will be used to provide wireless connection in
order to transmit sensor data to a remote user interface or a cloud-based dashboard. Because
of the system architecture's modular design, component expansion and replacement will be
simple. Robustness, precision, and dependability in a variety of settings will be guaranteed by
extensive field testing.

Design Procedure:

➢ Choose the right sensors according to the environmental characteristics that need to be
tracked.
➢ Put sensors, motor drivers, and a microprocessor together on the robot chassis.
➢ Configure the control logic to interpret sensor data and determine the best course of
action.
➢ Set up IoT communication protocols to allow streaming of data in real time.
➢ Test in controlled settings to confirm sensor mobility and accuracy.
➢ Make the system as reliable, energy-efficient, and modular as possible.

Expected Outcome:

A fully working IoT-enabled mobile surveillance robot with wireless data reporting, hazard
detection, and autonomous mobility is the anticipated result. For real-time monitoring in
hazardous or constrained areas, the robot will act as a proof-of-concept for combining several
sensor systems onto a single platform. The project's goal is to confirm that sensor fusion and
Internet of Things communication are feasible for low-cost surveillance applications.
