Ordering Rational Numbers

Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as fractions, including whole numbers and decimals. To order rational numbers on a number line, convert them to decimals, estimate their positions, and check their order from least to greatest. The document provides examples and practice exercises to reinforce the concept of ordering rational numbers visually.

Ordering Rational Numbers on a Number Line

What Are Rational Numbers?

• A rational number is any number that can be written as a
fraction (a/b), where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0.
Examples:
Positive fractions: ½, ¾, 1½, -2¾
Negative fractions: -⅔
Whole numbers: 3, 0, -5
Decimals: 0.75, -1.2
The Number Line
A number line is a visual representation of numbers in order.
Numbers to the right are greater. Numbers to the left are less

Steps in Plotting Rational Numbers

1. Convert all numbers to decimals (if needed)
2. Estimate and mark them on the number line
3. Check positions: left to right = least to greatest
Example – Order These Numbers
• Order the numbers: ⅓, -1, 0.75, -0.25
• Convert to decimals: 0.33, -1, 0.75, -0.25
• Place on number line
• Answer: -1, -0.25, 0.33, 0.75
Let’s Try This
• Directions: Order the following rational numbers to ascending
order.
• Set: -⅖, 0, 0.6, -0.75
• Answer: -0.75, -0.4, 0, 0.6
Word Problem Example
Maria owes $1.25, has $0.50, and borrows $0.75. Order these
values to show who has the most money.
Answer: -1.25, -0.75, 0.50 (Maria with $0.50 has the most).

Summary
• Rational numbers include fractions, decimals, and integers
• Use the number line to order them
• Always check signs (+ or -) and convert forms if needed
• Negative numbers are less than positive numbers
• More left = smaller, more right = bigger
• Convert all forms to decimals for easy comparison
• Use a number line to visualize order
Practice Exercise
Instructions:
1. Plot the following rational numbers on the number line below.
2. Then write the numbers in ascending and descending order.
Numbers to plot: -2.5, 3/4, -1, 0, -5/2, 1.2, -0.25
1. Plot the numbers on the number line below.
2. Write the numbers in ascending order (least to greatest):
3. Write the numbers in descending order (greatest to least).
4. Which number is farthest to the left on the number line?
5. Which number is closest to zero?
6. Which two numbers are equally distant from zero but on opposite
sides? __________ and __________
