Syllabus
Mini Project/ Electronic Design Workshop (EC681) 0L:0T:4P 2 credits
Guidelines:
1. The mini-project is a team activity having 3-4 students in a team. This is electronic product
design work with a focus on electronic circuit design.
2. The mini project may be a complete hardware or a combination of hardware and software.
The software part in mini project should be less than 50% of the total work.
3. Mini Project should cater to a small system required in laboratory or real life.
4. It should encompass components, devices, analog or digital ICs, micro controller with which
functional familiarity is introduced.
5. After interactions with course coordinator and based on comprehensive literature survey/
need analysis, the student shall identify the title and define the aim and objectives of mini-
project.
6. Student is expected to detail out specifications, methodology, resources required, critical
issues involved in design and implementation and submit the proposal within first week of
the semester.
7. The student is expected to exert on design, development and testing of the proposed work as
per the schedule.
8. Art work and Layout should be made using CAD based PCB simulation software. Due
considerations should be given for power requirement of the system, mechanical aspects for
enclosure and control panel design.
9. Completed mini project and documentation in the form of mini project report is to
be submitted at the end of semester.
10. The tutorial sessions should be used for discussion on standard practices used for electronic
circuits/product design, converting the circuit design into a complete electronic product, PCB
design using suitable simulation software, estimation of power budget analysis of the product,
front panel design and mechanical aspects of the product, and guidelines for documentation
/report writing.
Course Outcomes:
At the end of the course, students will demonstrate the ability to:
1. Conceive a problem statement either from rigorous literature survey or from the
requirements raised from need analysis.
2. Design, implement and test the prototype/algorithm in order to solve the conceived
problem.
3. Write comprehensive report on mini project work.

General Steps for Mini Project/ Electronic Design
1. The mini-project/electronic design must be completed following the university guidelines.
2. Based on a comprehensive literature survey/need analysis, the student shall identify the title
and define the purpose and objectives of the mini-project in consultation with the project
supervisor. It is recommended to submit at least four design project proposals, two in analog
electronics domain and two in the digital electronics domain (or a combination of both). Each
problem should cater to a small system required in the laboratory or real life. Every design
problem proposal should include the following points.
Design Proposal 1
(i) The title of the design problem
(ii) The utility of the design with justification
(iii) Aim and objectives of the design
(iv) Design specifications
(v) Methodology
(vi) Resources required (hardware & software)
(vii) Equipment required for testing/measurement
(viii) Any critical issues/requirements involved in the design
3. The project supervisor must approve each design proposal. It is recommended to submit a
minimum of four design proposals to the mini-project coordinator in the first week after the
lab begins.
4. Design Steps:
(i) The very first step is to understand the objective of the given problem.
(ii) Find out the designs available for this problem.
(iii)Out of several approaches choose the best one (depending on the available
equipment/components required for that design).
(iv) Synthesis (evaluate/calculate) the components required for a particular approach.
(v) Enlist the components or instruments required for your design fabrication, along with their
specification (required). Justify the specifications required for each component.
(vi) Verify that a particular component or an instrument (with your specification) is available to
you within the design lab.
(vii) If a few components are not available, change your design using on-hand
components/instruments within the lab or ask your teacher/instructor to change your design
specifications to design using available lab equipment.
(viii) Draw the circuit/schematic. Fabricate/implement the circuit over a breadboard/ Vero
Board/ PCB board.
(ix) After completion of fabrication/implementation, you are ready for the measurements.
(x) Perform experiments to ensure your design quality as mentioned in your design objective.
(xi) You must conclude after you finish your job and comment on further improvement of the
design.

5. The mini-project report and documentation of the completed mini-project must be
submitted at the end of the semester. In the report, the following points should be
addressed:
Mini-project Report
(i) Title of the design problem
(ii) Objectives of the design
(iii) Design specifications with current rating, voltage rating, power budget, precision,
accuracy, etc.
(iv) Proposed circuit and methodology
(v) Calculation/estimation of all circuit elements through systematic design steps
(vi) List of circuit elements with specifications
(vii) Design validation using simulating software (with all results)
(viii) Realization of the fabricated prototype on Breadboard or Veroboard
(ix) Details of PCB board prototyping (if any)
(x) Experimental validation supported by tables and graphs
(xi) Conclusion (specify whether design specifications have been realized, if not mention the
possible reasons, discuss the demerits of the design, discuss any other possible design
options with improved performance, etc).
Find below a few examples of design. Designs such as these may be used to guide the
preparation of design proposals, their systematic execution, and finally the preparation of
reports.
