1. In the Soil Erosion portal, look for information on causes of soil
erosion and how it affects soil fertility. Write a report on your
findings.
Soil erosion is the gradual wearing away of soil surface, which removes organic matter
and key nutrients in the process. If it continues unchecked, erosion can degrade soil
quality and decrease rooting depth, reducing crop yields. Sediment and nutrients
removed by water erosion can kill fish and impact water quality, and blowing dust from
wind erosion can cause safety hazards.
Soil erosion decreases soil fertility, which can negatively affect crop yields. It also sends
soil-laden water downstream, which can create heavy layers of sediment that prevent
streams and rivers from flowing smoothly and can eventually lead to flooding. Once soil
erosion occurs, it is more likely to happen again.
soil erosion control has a high potential to control on-site soil erosion and can provide
co-benefits including improving yield/productivity and water availability and retention.
In addition, vegetative measures that use perennial woody vegetation (shrubs and
trees) or grasses could increase soil organic Carbon (SOC) and support carbon
sequestration in woody biomass, and provide other co-benefits, such as increasing
plant and terrestrial biodiversity.
-The most effective way to control erosion is plant residue management, it is the way
of controlling soil erosion by intercepting raindrops, thereby reducing surface runoff
and protecting soil surface particle detachment by raindrop impact. Crop residue can
provide an excellent soil cover after harvest , improve soil water intake by preventing
soil surface sealing due to raindrop impact, and consequently, reduce surface runoff.

2. If you were to overhear a group of farmers complaining about

how much money they must spend on fertilizers, what suggestions
would you give them for saving money? Include your answer to this
question, along with your reasoning, in your report.
- I would suggest to them to use an organic fertilizer, because it's naturally
available sources. It is usually made from plant and animal waste and it's also
good for crops and soil. It always make the soil more fertile and good quality
crops.
