HARDWARE COMPONENTS
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected
to:
1. Identify the different hardware component
2. Discuss the function of each hardware
components
3. Realize the importance of every hardware
component of computer
What is a Computer?
A computer is an electronic machine that collects information,
stores it, processes it according to user instructions, and then
returns the result.
A computer is a programmable electronic device that
performs arithmetic and logical operations automatically using
a set of instructions provided by the user.
Components of Computer
Hardware- the physical part of the computer
Software – the set of instructions (programs)
which enable the hardware to perform
specific set of task.
System Unit
A system unit is the main
part of the computer. It is
an enclosure that contains
the major parts or
components of the
computer.
Chassis/System case
The enclosure that houses
all the interior
components of the
computer.
Motherboard
The main printed circuit
board which holds the
components of the
computer.
It supplies power and
provides ways for the
components to
communicate with each
other.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
A device that handles and
executes all the data and
instructions that the computer the
computer receives.
Also known as the brain of the
computer, it communicates with
the other components a computer
and tells them what to do, when
to do it, and which task needs to
be prioritized.
Random Access Memory (RAM)
A device that allows
computers to store and
retain information.
This memory is volatile,
which means they need
power to retain the
information they store.
Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
A storage device that
holds the operating
system and data files.
Solid State Drive (SSD)
A storage device that
practically function the
same way as hard disk
drives.
HDD vs SSD
The main difference is
that HDDs have
mechanical moving part
while SSDs contain
memory chips that store
information.
Floppy Disk Drive
A device that reads and
writes information on an
outdated storage device
called the floppy disk,
which has only 1.44MB
worth of storage space.
Optical Disk Drive (DVD/CD/BD-ROM)
A device that reads and
writes information on a
compact discs (CD), digital
versatile discs (DVD) and
Blu-ray discs.
Power Supply Unit (PSU)
A device that converts AC
power from the electrical
socket to the appropriate
power before distributing
it to the system
components via power
cables.
Power Supply Cables
Expansion cards/boards
Circuit boards that
provide a computer with
additional functionalities
and flatforms.
Video/Graphics Card
A device that converts
data from the system unit
to render an image or
display on your monitor.
Sound Card
An expansion card that
converts data into sound,
which will then be sent to
speakers.
Network Interface Card
Also called network card,
this is an expansion card
that allow a computer to
connect to the Internet or
local area network via LAN
cable or Wi-Fi antenna.
Modem Card
Enables the computer to
connect to the Internet
using telephone cable.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected
to:
1. Identify the different parts of Desktop Computer.
2. Discuss the function of each computer part.
3. Realize the importance of every part of the
computer.
