DESIGN
6.1. Calculation of conductors for Power Circuits by Capacity
Current
The calculation of the feeders by current capacity will be carried out in
based on what is established in the National Electrical Code (CEN) 200:2009, table
310.16. The current for conductor selection will be calculated using the
expression (1):
1.25∗kVA 1.25∗kW
Ic= = (1) (For three-phase circuits)
√ 3∗k V¿ √3∗kV∗Fp
¿
The temperature correction factor for the copper conductor with regime of
conductor temperature of 90°C, for a maximum design temperature of 37°C
(ZA-E-9001:"Meteorological and Environment Data") is as follows:
For low voltage feeders (0-2000V) 0.91

The minimum gauge to be installed in relation to its operating voltage level is the

6.2. Calculation of conductors for Power circuits due to Voltage Drop
Tension
For the calculation of voltage drops, the following expression (2) will be used.
%∆V3 ∅= √ 3∗Z∗I∗L∗100%(3) (For three-phase circuits)
V¿
Where:
L: Length of the Circuit (km).
Z: Conductor impedance (Ω/km).
I: Nominal design current (A).
VLLLine-to-line circuit tension (V).
To establish the values of resistance (R) and reactance (XL) of the
Low Voltage conductors used the National Electrical Code (CEN)
200:2009, chapter IX, tables 8. The requirements for voltage drop for loads
powered by cables
(PDVSA 90619.1.082) shall not exceed the following:
Power supplies: maximum 2% (with pf=0.9 as minimum).
Branch circuits for power and lighting: 3% maximum.
6.3. Calculation of conductors for Power circuits by Capacity
Short circuit
According to the PDVSA N-201 standard, Article 3.5.26, the conductors with
600 V insulation will not be increased due to short-circuit capacity.
6.4. Calculation of switches in Power Branch Circuit and
Lighting
The protection for the branch circuit of power and lighting is calculated as follows
way (4).
I design+¿I
I P= ¿ (4)
cond
Where:
- IdesignCircuit design current (A)
- IcondMaximum current tolerance of the conductor (A)
6.5. Calculation of conductors for branch circuits with motors
According to what is established in the CEN, sections 430-22, 23 and 24, the selection of
the conductor is selected in the following way:
Single motor case: The design current for conductor selection,
it will have a value of 125% of the rated current at full load of the equipment.
6.6. Calculation of protections for branch circuits with motors
For the purposes of selecting appropriate overload protections for the
circuits with motors, the provisions set out by the CEN in section 430-31 to 430-
145, which is the following:
For continuous service motors over 1HP, the device for
overload separated will have the following characteristics:
Motors with a service factor not less than 1.15d=125% In
(Nominal Current)
Engines with a temperature not exceeding 40°C Id=125% In
All the other engines Id=115% In
Source: Section 430.32 National Electrical Code
Regarding the selection of overcurrent protection for branch circuits
of engines, the following procedure will be followed:
When it comes to a single engine, knowing the type of starting system,
KVA code text and its operating characteristics, it will be possible to
select from Table No. 430-52 of the CEN (ANNEX C), the maximum capacities of
current of devices against short circuits and ground faults of branch circuits.
