SCALES Spasticity

The document outlines the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) for assessing spasticity, detailing two versions: one rated out of 4 and another out of 5, with specific descriptions for each level of hypertonia. It also introduces the Penn Spasm Scale, which categorizes the presence and frequency of spontaneous spasms. References for both scales are provided, indicating their origins in research from Ashworth and Penn.

M A S: Modified Asworth Scale

Specify during the rating whether we are referring to the MAS (out of 4), which means from 0 to 4: 0,
1, 1+, 2, 3, 4; or at the MAS (out of 5) that is to say from 0 to 5: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The 2 com-
portends 6 levels of rating - in contrast to Ashworth's first version which
only included 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4). One, MAS out of 5, allows for quantification.
that level 1+ does not allow it.

MAS MORE Description of the level

(on 4) (out of 5)
0 0 No hypertonia
1 1 Slight hypertonia with stretch reflex or minimal resistance
at the end of the race
1+ 2 Hypertension with stretch reflex and resistance during
from the first half of the allowed muscle race
2 3 Significant increase in muscle tone during
the whole muscle course, but the limb segment
remains easily mobilizable
3 4 Significant increase in muscle tone.
Passive movement is difficult
4 5 Major hypertension. Passive movement impossible
