PREAMBLE
Oh hello! Welcome to the 4th iteration of Synthetic Origins. This time I am tackling Chrono Trigger and
Radical Dreamers (as you could probably tell). To reiterate what was said in the previous albums, I’ve
always wondered what Final Fantasy music would have sounded like if they used their original
instrumentation before they were edited down to Super Nintendo-edited samples. I saw a video on YouTube
once where FF6 was doing this, playing back from a Roland Sound Canvas player, and it blew me away. So,
about 6 years ago I went on a rompler hunt and started learning the sources of a lot of games’ samples. I
found out that there was a community on Discord for people like me named the VGM & Other Instrument
Sources where people would post not only the sources of some games’ instruments, but where to find those
samples as well.

And thus, Synthetic Origins was born.

The first edition came out about five years ago for Final Fantasy IV. Once FF5 and FF6 were completed, the
next logical step was Chrono Trigger. I did not initially plan on having Radical Dreamers as part of this
endeavor, but then I just..you know, kept finding its sounds everywhere. :)

Chrono Trigger’s samples are so masterfully crafted by the Square sound team that I had a hard time
deciding, what even IS a “restoration”? What even IS an “uncompressed” version? Well, like FF5 and FF6
before it, CT/RD is no different in that I had a hard time deciding which full instrumental patches and which
samples I would pluck from those patches.

A “restoration” using original samples edited the same way as the SNES is not interesting to me. It’s just
like, playing an SPC file at 44.1KHz. So this soundtrack will utilize a mixture of both. There are some
samples in the patches that some have commented on my YouTube channel videos as “dissonant”. An
example is the Sitar patch used in Corridors of Time, where a lower pitched sample sounded very off-
putting so I decided to scrap it in this version.
THE SYNTHESIZERS/ROMPLERS USED
-Roland S-550 (Yes! It was used on this album, just not as much as I’d had hoped)
-Roland S-760 with SCSI2SD emulating the Roland CD-5
-LCD-1 Disc
-Fairlight CMI III Library (There are a number of Fairlight sounds used like the Accordion, and the Conga
sample)
-Akai S1000 Library
-Akai CD 3000
-Best Services Giga Pack Vol 1 and Vol 2
-Invision Lightware Volume 1
-Bob Clearmountain’s Drums
-Kurzweil K1200 Pro 1
-Kurzweil K2000 with Orchestral and Contemporary ROMsets
-Korg M1
-Masterbits Climax Collection Vol. 2 Classic (For the Pizzicato Bass)
-Emulator EIII

There were a few samples that I could never find so I improvised. As far as I knew, the only unfound
samples were:

-Crash Cymbal – I just couldn’t figure out where it came from. Maybe it will be like FF6’s crowd mumble
sound where I find it randomly one day shortly after the album release
-Snare Drum – I actually scoured every library I could find in a date range before 1995. I even asked a
prolific game composer to ask Mr. Mitsuda where it came from. In the end, Mitsuda-san said that there were
a number of sounds he actually sampled.
-Tick Tock sound – I cheated. I’m using the game’s sample except upsampled.
-The Glassy Pad sound in the Future timeline music tracks are actually a sample from Giga Pack, however I
went one step further and recreated the sound from chipsynth OPS7, using parameters from the SY77, the
original synthesizer that created that sample.

ANALYSIS OF CHRONO TRIGGER'S MUSICAL STYLE

Here are some observations I made:

-This sound driver is newer than FF6’s, where the “drum mode” is actually used. Drums were way easier
this time around to reproduce.
-Nobuo Uematsu enjoys his legatos, and panbrellos in this soundtrack. :)
I would like to thank the following people

Yuzo Koshiro – Thank you for encouraging me and influencing me to buy some of the most amazing
vintage hardware!

My friends and family – Without you, I wouldn't have gotten this far. Thank you! I miss you mom!

Nobuo Uematsu and Minoru Akao – What can I say other than the obvious? Thank you for inspiring me
and generations to aspire to something greater!

MY AMAZING PATRONS – Without them I could not afford the Roland S-760 and other much needed
hardware-upgrade and VST plugin services that I’ve been using! THANK YOU ALL! You are amazing. I
truly appreciate you all. If you want to help support me on Patreon and help me continue working on this I
absolutely want to work on, please check out https://www.patreon.com/tssf

loveemu – For patching vgmtrans. I ended up remaking Phantom Train by ear but fixing vgmtrans helped
me get it right. Also adding FF7 support is going to make one of the next albums way easier to make. ;)

G-Boy – If it weren’t for you finding a lot of stuff I couldn’t find, then this wouldn’t be possible. Please check
out his spreadsheet here.

The owners and maintainers of NEWER VGM Sound Sources.

And you! – I never expected this album to do majorly well, but it is a passion project, and it is something I've
always wanted to do. If you read this far, that means you were interested and I thank you for all your
support! Please enjoy this release and look forward to more stuff down the road!
