Report on Bluetooth Technology

Name: Diksha Kumari Gupta

Course: M.Tech

Registration No.: 24131108007

1. Introduction

Bluetooth is a wireless communication technology that allows devices to exchange data over short

distances using radio waves. It was developed to replace wired connections and is commonly used

in mobile phones, headsets, computers, printers, and other digital devices.

2. History of Bluetooth

- Invented by: Ericsson (1994)

- Named after: Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson, a 10th-century king who united Denmark and Norway

- Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) formed in 1998 to promote and develop Bluetooth

standards

3. How Bluetooth Works

Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM band and uses a technique called frequency hopping spread

spectrum to reduce interference.

- Range: Typically 10 meters (can extend up to 100 meters)

- Topology: Star topology (one master device and multiple slave devices)

- Data Transfer Rate: Up to 3 Mbps (Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR), higher with newer versions

4. Bluetooth Versions

Version | Year | Key Features

--------|------|--------------

1.0 - 1.2 | 1999-2003 | Basic wireless communication

2.0 + EDR | 2004 | Enhanced Data Rate (3 Mbps)

3.0 + HS | 2009 | High-speed data transfer

4.0 | 2010 | Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)

5.0 | 2016 | Increased range, speed, and broadcasting capacity

5.1 / 5.2 | 2019-2020 | Direction finding, audio sharing

5.3 | 2021 | Improved energy efficiency and security

5. Applications of Bluetooth

- Consumer Electronics: Wireless headphones, smartwatches, speakers

- Healthcare: Wireless monitoring devices, fitness trackers

- Automotive: Hands-free calling, wireless media streaming

- Home Automation: Smart locks, thermostats, lighting systems

- Industrial Use: Asset tracking, wireless sensors

6. Advantages of Bluetooth

- Low power consumption

- No need for line of sight

- Cost-effective

- Easy to set up

- Widely compatible

7. Disadvantages of Bluetooth

- Limited range

- Slower data rate compared to Wi-Fi

- Security vulnerabilities if not configured properly

- Interference in crowded wireless environments

8. Bluetooth vs Wi-Fi

Feature | Bluetooth | Wi-Fi

--------|-----------|-------

Range | ~10 meters | ~100 meters

Speed | Up to 3 Mbps | Up to 1 Gbps or more

Power Consumption | Low | High

Best Use | Short-range connections | Internet access

9. Security in Bluetooth

Bluetooth uses various security mechanisms like:

- Pairing and bonding

- Authentication and encryption

- Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) in newer versions

Despite these, users must stay alert for threats like Bluejacking, Bluesnarfing, and Bluebugging.

10. Future of Bluetooth

- More focus on IoT (Internet of Things)

- Bluetooth Mesh Networking for smart homes and industries

- Improved audio sharing and location tracking

- Integration in wearable tech and healthcare devices

11. Conclusion

Bluetooth technology continues to evolve, offering reliable, short-range wireless communication.

With the growing need for wireless and portable devices, Bluetooth will play a crucial role in future

innovations.
