BIG DATA & ITS
APPLICATION
Big Data refers to the data set which are extremely large &
complex data which are difficult to process using traditional
techniques.
Big Data is classified as: -
Value: - Big data needs to be processed & analyzed to extract
the valuable information that can be used to drive the business
Decision.
For example
a) Demand forecasting improves the grid efficiency.
b) Predictive maintenance saves the equipment outage time &
the cost of generation.
Volume: -Big data involves a massive amount of information
often measured in terabytes.
For example
a) Smart meters in large utilities generates a lot of data daily.
b) GE & siemens collects a large amount of data from sensors
to maintain the proper utilization of resources.
Velocity: - Data are generated very fast in the industry which
requires a real time analysis.
For example
a) Real time SCADA system extract the data from different
substations.
b) Requires a real time data of the data of the weather to
forecast the demand of the power.
Veracity: - It refers to the accuracy & quality of the data.
For example
a) Sensor error or missing values in grid monitoring system
requires filtering & validation.
b) Sensors on transformers measures the
parameters like oil temperature, gas level & moisture.
Variety: - Big data includes various types of data such as
structure, unstructured & semi structure data.
For example: -
a) Power grid monitoring Data: - structure: - sensor readings
Unstructured: -maintenance log
Semi-structure: -logs from IOT
b) Renewable energy system: - structure: wind turbine sensor
Unstructured: satellite imagery
Semi-structure: weather APIs
