LVDT Notes

LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) is an electromechanical transducer that converts linear displacement into an electrical signal using mutual induction. It consists of a primary coil, two secondary coils, a movable soft iron core, and a non-magnetic tube, providing excellent linearity and high sensitivity. LVDTs are widely used in various applications such as aerospace, automotive, and robotics, but require signal conditioning and can be affected by environmental factors.

LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer)

1. Introduction:

LVDT is an electromechanical transducer that converts linear displacement into an electrical signal.

It works on the principle of mutual induction.

2. Construction:

- Primary Coil: Placed at the center and excited with AC voltage.

- Secondary Coils (S1, S2): Identical, placed on either side of the primary coil and connected in

series opposition.

- Soft Iron Core: Movable core connected to the object being measured.

- Non-Magnetic Tube: Houses the coils and core, reduces eddy currents.

3. Working Principle:

- AC applied to the primary coil induces voltages in S1 and S2.

- When the core is centered: V1 = V2 -> Output = 0.

- When the core moves: Unequal voltages are induced -> Differential output shows magnitude and

direction.

4. Characteristics:

- Excellent linearity, high sensitivity, infinite resolution.

- Frictionless operation, high accuracy.

5. Advantages:

- Accurate and repeatable, long life, wide range, bidirectional output.

6. Disadvantages:

- Needs signal conditioning, affected by temperature and magnetic fields.

7. Applications:

- Aerospace, automotive, structural monitoring, CNC, robotics, biomedical, etc.
