AC Generator

An AC generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy through electromagnetic induction by rotating a coil in a magnetic field, inducing an electromotive force (emf). The induced emf varies with time, resulting in alternating current as the polarity changes periodically. The maximum emf occurs when the angle of the coil is at 90º or 270º, where the change in magnetic flux is greatest.

AC Generator

An ac generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy using electromagnetic induction principle.
When loop orientation with magnetic field changes (flux change); induced emf (current) produced in the coil.

It consists of a coil mounted on a rotor shaft. The axis of rotation of the coil is perpendicular to the direction
of the magnetic field. The coil (called armature) is mechanically rotated in the uniform magnetic field causes
change in the magnetic flux, so an emf is induced in the coil. The ends of the coil are connected to an
external circuit.

Magnetic flux linked with the coil ø = BA cosθ = BA cos (ωt) (θ= ωt)

From Faraday’s law, the induced emf for the rotating coil of N turns is then,

where NBAω is the maximum value of the emf (sin function varies between +1 and –1)

Since the value of the sin function varies between +1 and –1, the sign, or polarity of the emf changes with
time. Note from Figure below that the emf has its maximum value when θ= 90º or θ = 270º, as the change
of flux is greatest at these points. The direction of the current changes periodically and therefore the current
is called alternating current.

An alternating emf is generated by a loop of wire rotating in a magnetic field.
