MATHEMATICS IN THE

MODERN WORLD

Prepared by: Giovanni M. Naje

INTRODUCTION
Discuss the importance of studying
"Mathematics in the Modern World" as a
subject.

 What is Mathematics in the modern world?

 How can it benefit students, regardless of their field of
specialization?
 Discuss how math helps in making decisions, solving
problems, or understanding situations
Chapter 1.1

PATTERNS AND
NUMBERS IN
NATURE AND THE
WORLD
A pattern is a repeated decorative design or a
regular and repeated arrangement of elements.
Patterns can be found in many different contexts,
including:

1.Visual Patterns: In art and design, patterns

refer to repetitive motifs or arrangements, such
as stripes, polka dots, or geometric shapes.
2.Natural Patterns: In nature, patterns occur in
things like the symmetry of a butterfly’s wings,
the spiral of a seashell, or the branching of trees.
3.Behavioral Patterns: In psychology or
sociology, patterns describe regularities in
human behavior or social interactions.

4.Mathematical Patterns: In math, patterns are

sequences or relationships between numbers or
shapes, such as the Fibonacci sequence or
fractals.

5.Patterns in Music: In music, patterns can

refer to repeating sequences of notes or rhythms.
Mathematics in the
Modern World
Nature of Mathematics
What is Mathematics in the modern world?
 Mathematics in the modern world is integral to
numerous fields and aspects of daily life. It
influences everything from technological
advancements to everyday decision-making.
 In the modern world, mathematics is a
fundamental tool and language used to
understand, describe, and influence various
aspects of life and technology. It serves as the
backbone for numerous fields and applications,
driving innovation and problem-solving.
How mathematics help us
understand their
formation and properties?
Mathematics helps us understand the formation and properties
of various phenomena by providing precise tools and frameworks
for analyzing patterns, structures, and relationships. Here are a
few key ways mathematics achieves this:
1. Modeling: Mathematics allows us to create models that represent real-world systems and
phenomena. For example, differential equations model the motion of planets, the spread of diseases,
and the flow of fluids. These models help us understand how systems evolve over time and predict
future behavior.

2. Quantification: Through mathematics, we can quantify properties such as length, area, volume,
and probability. This quantification helps in comparing and analyzing different entities and
phenomena. For instance, geometry helps us understand the properties of shapes and spaces, while
algebra helps us solve equations that describe relationships between quantities.

3. Pattern Recognition: Mathematics enables us to identify and describe patterns and

regularities. For example, number theory explores the properties of integers, such as primes and
factors, while statistical methods help us analyze patterns in data sets.
➢ Proof and Logic: Mathematical proofs provide a rigorous way to
establish the truth of statements based on axioms and previously
established results. This logical structure ensures that conclusions
are valid and reliable. For example, proof techniques in geometry
and algebra help us understand the properties and relationships of
geometric figures and algebraic structures.

➢ Optimization: Mathematics helps us find the best solutions to

problems by optimizing certain criteria. For example, linear
programming is used to maximize profit or minimize cost subject to
constraints, and calculus helps in finding maximum and minimum
values of functions.
➢ Simulation and Computation: Mathematical techniques are used
in simulations and computational models to explore complex
systems and predict their behavior. For instance, numerical
methods are used to approximate solutions to complex equations
that cannot be solved analytically.

➢ Theory Development: Mathematics provides a framework for

developing theories about abstract concepts and their
properties. For example, group theory studies symmetries and
abstract algebraic structures, while topology explores properties
of space that are preserved under continuous deformations

EXAMPLES OF SHAPE PATTERN:
NUMBER PATTERNS

 Number patterns are sequences of

numbers that follow a specific rule
or formula. They help identify
relationships between numbers and
can be used to solve problems or
make predictions.

1.What number should 2.What is the missing number
replace A to make the to make the number bonds
number bonds correct? correct?
