Hossana Theological Seminary Intermediate English Course for

Degree I Students
Objectives: At the end of this course, the students will be able to:

 aware of changing Active Voice (AV) into Passive Voice (PV) with the given rules into
consideration;
 practice changing active voice into passive voice and vice versa;
 aware of rules of subject and verb agreement followed by some examples;
 familiar with certain rules of changing direct speech into indirect speech (reported
speech);
 identify where and when to use the right capitalization.

Unit One: Changing Active Voice into Passive Voice

 Meaning of Active Voice and Passive Voice


 Rules to change Active Voice into Passive Voice
 Changing Active Voice into Passive Voice in terms of Tenses
 Activities on changing Av into PV

Unit Two: Subject and Verb Agreement

 Defining subject and verb agreement


 Rules for agreeing subject with verb
 Examples for each rule in agreeing subject with verb
 Different activities on subject and verb agreement

Unit Three: Direct Speech and Reported Speech (Indirect Speech)

 Meaning of direct speech and reported speech


 Rules for changing direct speech into reported speech
 Review activities on direct speech and indirect speech

Unit Four: Capitalization in Use

 Definition of capitalization
 Rules for the right use of capitalization
 Miscellaneous activities on capitalization

Unit Five: Sentence Writing

 Definition of sentence
 Classification of sentences by function and structure
 Review activities
