Title: Evaluating and Improving Operational Efficiency in a Local Business
Objective:
To enable students to apply operations management principles by analyzing the operations of a
real-world business and recommending improvements in areas such as process design, inventory
management, quality control, and capacity planning.
Instructions:
1. Select a Local Business or Service Organization
Examples: Mini-factory, bakery, hospital, retail shop, transportation service, or government
office.
2. Collect Data through Observation or Interviews
Observe workflows, customer service, inventory handling, and equipment usage.
Ask questions about peak hours, stock management, and quality control practices.
3. Analyze the Following Areas:
a. Process Design
Describe the core process (e.g., how a product is made or a service is delivered).
Use a simple process flowchart to show steps from start to finish.
Identify bottlenecks or delays in the process.
b. Inventory Management
What types of inventory are used? (raw materials, finished goods, etc.)
Estimate order frequency, stock levels, and lead time.
Suggest how EOQ or Just-in-Time (JIT) could improve efficiency.
c. Capacity Planning
What resources (labor, machines) does the organization have?
Is there underutilization or overloading?
Recommend how to balance capacity with demand.
d. Quality Control
What steps are in place to ensure quality?
Are there customer complaints or product/service failures?
Propose a basic TQM or Six Sigma approach.
4. Write a Report (6–10 pages) with the following structure:
Cover Page
Introduction: Brief background of the business
Analysis: Findings in the four operational areas
Recommendations: Practical suggestions to improve operations
Conclusion
Appendix: Interview questions, charts, photos, etc.
